Asmodeus walked into the Cell with his name on the door. Nathan Terrence - Cell D, it proclaimed. An older soldier, obviously preparing to depart for class, nodded to him as he gathered up his desk and did a double-take as he noted the white Institute band around his arm that marked him as a probational student.

Mode gave him an even stare, and eventually the soldier looked away, a little uncomfortable, collected his things and left.

Setting his bag down on the bunk assigned to him, he remained standing, closed his eyes and inhaled. Whatever they said about the filters, recycled air smelled different, tasted different than earthside. This was his first real breath of it in a long, long time, and as he slowly opened his eyes, exhaling, he felt truly alive for the first time in two years.

A small mirror hung on one wall of the cell. He smirked, approached it and examined it carefully. Metal frame, glass with polish, easy to disassemble. He hadn't seen one free of transparent polycarbon casing since he'd been dragged down from the BattleSchool, and the reflection seemed unnaturally clear as he studied himself.

His grey eyes, once so changeable, had solidified to a flat slate. His jawline had strengthened, and he looked older by years than he had when he'd been taken into the institute. There was a new hardness about his lips and eyes. The battle braid was gone, replaced by short spikes of the same white blonde. He was taller, his shoulders broadened, hips narrow, his entire body a lean, muscular machine. That was something the doctors had never denied him, the opportunity to hone himself, and he'd taken full advantage of it.

When they'd told him he would be sent to Command School, near the end of his "rehabilitation", he had remained reserved, withdrawn. He hadn't wanted to risk disappointment. Now he was here, and somewhere in the maze of corridors and rooms that occupied this little asteroid was the person that had driven him to defeat the screening process and gain admittance.

Wick.

He'd made subtle inquiries after he seemed assured of his enrollment. She was here, or would be, shortly. So was Jorry. He smiled a little to himself. His re-instatement had given him access to all the IA compound had to offer in the latest in hand to hand combat, and he'd taken it all. If Jor attempted to balk him, he was in for a bloody surprise.

But it was Wick he wanted the most.

She had used him as a pawn to hurt Dante and Swede, nothing more. God knows what Jor and Wick had done to them after she'd knocked him out, but from the look in Dante's eyes as she saw him dragged away, it wasn't something forgivable. Not by Dante, and not by him. His jaw muscles contracted in the mirror. Thinking about Dante always brought pain, and he shoved her out of his mind.

It was little Silk who'd finally told him who was responsible for the letter, just before he'd been shipped to earth. In the first rush of clarity after the thorazine injection, locked in the small restraining pod they used for transport of dangerous criminals, he'd shivered in tune with the ship engines and imagined wildly all the horrible things he would do to her, given the chance.

And now, here it was. For the first time in nearly two years, Asmodeus smiled.

The two escorting guards palmed the door to her new Quad room open and ushered her inside, throwing her duffel onto the only empty bunk before giving her two identical, final warning frowns and marching out of the barracks. She just watched them leave with a dancing gaze, standing stiffly in the empty cell for a moment, breathing in the slightly chilly air, absorbing her new surroundings. Alone, she thought, relishing the word. Eight years of being constantly monitored, guarded, and locked away from the world; this was her first moment alone and free.

She shifted and caught sight of herself in the wall mirror. Stepping closer, slowly and deliberately, she watched her reflection smirk back at her, and a satisfied purr escaped her throat. Same long coppery-auburn curls, same piercing green-gold eyes, same faded scar drawn across her now-defined cheekbones. She stretched, smile widening as the golden locket and ring hanging on a delicate chain around her slender throat twinkled in the light. The picture of her and Jax still sat inside, the only difference now was his ring; she'd thought to bury it with him, but chose instead this constant reminder. Jax was gone. Jax was dead. She had finally completed her revenge. Ahhh yes, she blinked in satisfaction.

Kat was back.

Making it here had been anything but easy. She'd been iced as a launchy eight years ago, sent back to Earth under careful supervision, placed in the Charybdis Institute for "rehabilitation." It was her fight against Gabe and Sol that had been the final straw, they said-- after all, her placement at Battle School had been a gamble in the first place, a risk because of her psychological evaluations. Extraordinarily violent, they'd called her, unstable anger and too inclined to sudden and complete retribution. Such bullshit; everyone knew that was what the IF was looking for. But the injuries of her enemies was enough to convict her, and she was shuttled away to the Institute to see if whatever talent she had could be salvaged.

And thus Kat was placed amongst all those psychopaths and murderers and just plain crazy inmates. She wasn't crazy, not in the least-- Kat knew that, her doctors knew that, the IF officers who visited her monthly knew that. But being so completely and utterly rational about her actions was its own kind of madness, they'd told her. If there had been remorse or any sense of acknowledgement that what she had done was wrong, then perhaps they could "reevaluate her situation." But Kat felt no remorse. She felt no guilt for finally killing Jax, for disposing of that Zion Jayde after what he'd done to her. Of course, that made her a murderer too, no better than some of her cellmates. The only difference was that the doctors didn't know what she'd done. The only difference was that if she was anything, she was an utterly believeable manipulative girl. And those lies saved her from being stuck in the Institute the rest of her life.

Of course, it hadn't been all that bad. There had been one boy there, another inmate she'd allied... no, befriended. As a "veteran" of the Institute as some of the newcomers called her, she'd shown this boy around at first. A few months later, when five other boys had attacked her, caught her by surprise in an attempt to... Kat shook her head. Her rescuer had arrived and saved her, and later, when he needed her help, she'd found herself at his side. He too would be here at Command School, and she'd find him soon. It'd be wonderful to see Asmodeus again.

With a feline yawn, Kat cast a final lingering glance in the mirror and then turned toward her bunk. Crawling inside, she kicked the duffel to the floor and stretched languidly, enjoying the freedom of her own will. The shuttle flight had been long and exhausting, and so Kat settled into her pillow and rested, ears aware as her eyes closed and she relaxed.

Still smarting from his encounter with Dante, Mode almost didn't notice her until after the door shut.

Katera Quistin had somehow materialized in his Quad Cell.

He moved three silent, graceful steps to the side. Maybe he was mistaken. This newcomer had her coppery curls, her lithe figure, deceptively compact, her silent breath as she slept. The scar on her cheek that came into view as he circled her made it clear. If it wasn't her, someone had gone to great lengths of imitation.

How was this possible? There was no way she could have gotten up here without being approved...and there was her duffle. She was here legitimately, in his Cell, no less. Absolutely fascinating. She was obviously here to stay.

He'd hated the institute, hated everything about it. Kat had been the first person he'd talked to that still retained any measure of coherency. He'd gotten the "30cc Tour". Nothing could make the Institute bearable, but she'd made it a little less grim. For him, anyway. There were rumors about what'd she'd done to get there...and what'd she done after...that made him a little wary of her, but it hardly mattered when insanity was all around them anyway. She always managed to find some grisly humor in a situation, no matter how horrible or vile. At first he'd turned away, a little disgusted, but he soon realized that it was a necessary survival trait. He didn't say it out loud like she did, but he found himself doing the same thing, finding humor in the death and madness around him.

He hadn't known her that well yet the night he'd fought one of the gangs of army brats off her. He hadn't known anything about her when he'd tried to help her up. When she knocked him away and vaulted to her feet in time to kick the leader in the face before he passed out, he began to learn.

The girl was a survivor, and that was something he respected. A guarded friendship had grown up between them, the fallen angel and the stray cat. When the junkie high on crystal bliss had almost killed him, she'd shown up in time to keep his throat intact, and as hard and cold as he had grown, he was grateful. They'd traded histories. It was enough.

He dropped slowly into a crouch on the floor nearest the head of her bunk and studied her. She was breathing a hair too quickly, and looked like she was containing a smile. She was awake. "What poor misguided soul let you out, kitten?" Cold slate fastened onto her green-gold gaze as she opened her eyes and smiled at him, sharp canines just touching her bottom lip.

Feigning sleep, Kat could barely refrain from smiling as Asmodeus dropped to a crouch near her head, his smooth voice slightly taunting. "What poor misguided soul let you out, kitten?" It was then she opened her eyes and allowed herself a grin, his slate-grey eyes staring into hers as she ran the tip of her tongue along her sharp canine teeth and stretched.

"Mmmmmm Mode..." she purred, pushing the tousled curls from her face and smirking cockily at him. As much as she hated to admit it, to herself or anyone, she had liked him, as much as she was capable of feeling anything for anyone. He'd been her only friend at the Institute, and their mutual wariness toward one another did nothing ease her loneliness when he'd been taken away a few weeks before her. Reaching out a hand and flicking his ear lightly, Kat's green eyes flashed with taunting happiness.

"Oh, I escaped, y'know. They couldn't possibly keep me there any longer. I missed you too much." His own cold steel eyes shifted color at her mocking tone, but Kat merely stretched in languid relaxation. "The doctors somehow became convinced that I had changed for the better. We both know how innocent and remorseful I am... once they figured that out, they let me go."

Kat fluttered her eyelashes playfully and sat up, leaning back against the wall as her gaze hardened, her features setting back into the familiar wary lines. Nothing could change her careful watchfulness; it had kept her alive for eight years, and even with Asmodeus, she didn't dare drop it for a moment. "Did you just get here too, Mode?"

He tilted his head slightly away as she flicked at his ear, her fingertips barely grazing his skin. She stretched and his lips quirked in a small smirk. She was always like that, playful and threatening at the same time. After what happened with Dante, he'd felt immune to it, but there were plenty of other males in the compound who weren't. Most of them had scars now to remind them.

"This morning. I've looked around. Only a few cameras, no bars, no guards. No locks but those flimsy electronic ones you can break if you hit hard enough." His eyes darkened as he remembered when he'd learned that, but he quickly cleared it away. "Got into one of the supply closets. They use normal tie-downs and cuffs, no Nylette, no twitchers, nothing." He settled easily into the chair near the desk and put his feet up on it, his arms crossing his chest. "Compared to home, this place is going to be pretty dull." He raised an eyebrow at her for emphasis.

Kat nodded approvingly at Mode's assessment, pleased by his thorough survey of the school. No guards meant they were free to explore on their own... and although it also meant there would be fewer adults to keep others away from her, as had happened more than a few times before at the Institute, she wasn't very concerned. One quickly learned to take care of themself or risked being beaten, raped, or worse. Mode had helped her when she faced the "worse" kind of attack. Kat wasn't bloodly likely to let anyone do that again.

He raised an eyebrow in derisive calculation, and Kat purred at him in return, her voice low and husky. "Oh, I'm sure we could find something fun to do, sweetheart." His smirk suddenly reminded her of Jax, the way his white-blonde spikes would fall across his forehead whenever he moved. Kat's eyes narrowed slightly in remembrance, and she fell silent as she continued to watch Mode lounge gracefully in his chair.

Mode's smirk widened slightly into a small wicked smile. "Oh, I'd imagine. Would you like a tour? It's only fair, after all." He glanced at the stripe around her arm and then flicked his eyes back to her face. "That gets us a lot of attention. If they see two of us at once, maybe they'll lay out a parade." He swung his feet down to the floor and stood in a single smooth motion, one hand reaching into his pocket for the little silver sphere. "Come on, then. Mustn't keep our public waiting."

Bounding from her bunk, Kat gaze Mode a raking, appraising once-over before taking his arm, her fingernails digging slightly into the muscle of his bicep. With an innocent little grin, offset only by the malicious twinkle in her eyes, she managed a naive expression on her face as she pulled him toward the door. "Yes, please give me the grand tour of this asteroid, Asmodeus..." He palmed open the door and they sauntered together out into the hallway.

Mode entered the barracks with Kat on his heels. The other two bunks were empty and stiffly made. The other two soldiers wouldn't be allowed back into their Cell until the first week of probation was up. After that, if they harmed any students, it couldn't fall under "adjustment issues", according to the IF Handbook.

"Well, that was an adventure, eh Kitten?" Mode said as he walked over to his bunk, unzipping his uniform jacket and removing it with his undershirt before he sat down on the bed. Unlacing his boots, he pulled them off and slipped out of the rest of his uniform, rolling his head to relieve muscle strain and kicking the covers back. Bunks instead of cots. Another something to get used to, he thought as he stretched out under the covers and tucked his hands behind his head.

"Everything's an adventure when we're involved." Kat smirked, glancing away from Mode as he stripped and climbed into bed. But feeling no such modesty about herself, she kicked her boots haphazardly across the room, pulling her shirt over her head without bothering to unzip it. Unbuckling her belt, she slipped from her pants, stretching languidly in only her undertank and skivvies. Ignoring Mode completely, she slipped into her own bunk, yawning.

"Shhhh, nite darlin.' You snore, I'll slit your throat before you wake." With that final goodnight, Kat turned over and closed her eyes.

Unfortunately, an hour later, she was still wide awake, laying on her back and staring at the bunkbottom above her. Mode was asleep, breathing softly in his bed, but Kat couldn't shake the weary, scared feelings she had. Glancing over at Mode, she crawled from her bunk and climbed into his own, curling up in a ball beside him. Much better... the sound of his breathing soothed her, and Kat drifted off finally.

Mode opened his eyes slowly when he felt a warm feline body slip into his bunk next to him, curling against him. Once he decided that she wasn't there to kill him, he closed his eyes again. The Kitten must have been in pretty bad shape to seek this kind of solace. It didn't cost him anything. If it made her feel better, why not?

Her arm was across his chest, one of her legs smooth and warm against his hip and the top of his thigh, her silky curls draped over his shoulder. The curve of her upper body rested against his side, and Mode eventually opened his eyes again.

Sleep was going to be difficult tonight.

A twinge of guilt flickered through his mind and he chased it away immediately. He had nothing to feel guilty about anything that might happen between him and Katera, no matter how far it went. And this wasn't very far.

Still, her lithe body felt good against his, and it was an automatic gesture that felt so natural he almost didn't notice it when he brought his arm down and put it around her, his fingers coming to rest against the smooth skin of her waist.

A different sort of texture met the ends of his fingertips, and he delicately traced a long, fine curving scar that ran the length of her side. Whatever had made that cut had been sharp and quickly swung. There was another on her arm, and as he finally cradled her close, curling his fingers against her flat muscular stomach, he felt the edge of another. Such a battleworn girl so young.

If she wanted his comfort, she could have it. Maybe she helped him too. He closed his eyes and slept.

Kat stirred in her sleep, drifting on the edge of consciousness as Jax wrapped his arms around her in her dream, his fingers tracing the bare skin of her stomach. But then the flash of a dagger in his other hand caused her to gasp, her eyes flying open as she raked her fingernails hard against his chest, five long bloody gashes appearing across his skin.

"No!" She hissed, struggling, only half-aware of what was happening. Her captor's arms still held her close as she fought, twisting in his grasp, her green eyes flashing wildly. "I'll kill you, Jax!"

Her sharp nails brought him completely awake in less than three seconds. "I'll kill you, Jax!" Her voice was hoarse with sleep and desparation.

He half shoved her away with one arm as he latched onto her wrists with the other, coming up to his knees and shaking her violently. "Katera!" he growled, "Kat, wake up!" She didn't quite seem to see him, her green-gold eyes still out of focus.

"Let go of me, let go..." She twisted as Nathan held her wrists together tightly in his hands, planting her bare feet against his bleeding chest and kicking with a mighty shove of her legs. That force knocked them both off-balance, and Nathan tumbled to the floor, dragging her with him as she fought, realization slowly dawning on her even as she continued to struggle. A few curls fell into her face, obscuring her sight as she shook her head and hissed. "Please..."

He released her wrists, but didn't back away.

The stinging sensation on his chest reminded him that he was bleeding, but he ignored it for now.

He could see her dimly, the faint light from the wall terminal casting a strange reddish cast over the room, outlining her figure, muscular and delicate at the same time. He could see a few of the scars he'd touched before, and a few more he hadn't. So many scars.

With the grace only an angel could have matched, he tilted her face up to his, brushing the curls gently away from her tearstained cheeks. Whatever fights this girl had been through, the torture her body had been through didn't compare to the pain in her eyes. Her scars were on the inside, too.

We are alike, he said to himself. No one else will understand this, not like we do. His eyes remained cold slate as he leaned down and touched his mouth to hers briefly, touching his tongue against his lips as he backed away, tasting the salt of her tears.

He just kissed me...

Mode backed away from her, his eyes cold slate as they ran over her face, her body as she half-sat sprawled on the barracks floor. Her own green-gold eyes widened, watching his muscles move dangerously beneath his own taunt skin as he shifted gracefully, and a choked husky growl escaped her throat.

Kat didn't know what to do. Part of her screamed to strike out, to make him learn his lesson for ever touching her, to attack him like she'd repelled all the other men who dared approach her at the Institute. She'd quickly learned that kisses brought only danger for herself. But the other, warmer part of her psyche made her move sinuously toward Mode, crawling into his lap, seeking his comfort. Comfort and...

Asmodeus fell back as she crawled into his lap. Her muscles were tense. She was fighting something. He let her sit there for a moment, her head resting against his bloodied chest, coppery curls brushing his chin, before he put his arms around her gently, leaving her room if she wished to pull away. He had the sudden feeling of holding an ill-tamed animal in his lap, one so hungry it had ventured close enough to feed, but so wary that the wrong glance would send it running.

Something cold and metallic was pressed between them. A locket, he remembered. He tilted his head slightly and kissed her curls -

...Shh, Anjel," he said in a whisper as he stroked her hair. Her name was so close to his own. Her evident fear made him weak and strong at the same time, weak with pain and sorrow for her, strong with anger against Jor and anyone else who might ever cause her this kind of pain.

Still holding her, he resolved to protect her, from Jor or anyone else.

Even himself...

Mode's eyes flew open and he pulled his head away from hers slightly, let his arms drop to his sides. He'd failed Dante. He'd left her broken on the floor like a doll. He wasn't going to allow himself to do the same to Kat, no matter what his body wanted.

"Are you alright?" he asked, his voice chill and courteous.

A purr rumbled deep in her throat, even as Mode tensed and pulled away slightly, and Kat glanced up at him, blood from the wounds she'd given him streaked across her cheeks. Licking her lips, she bit her lower lip and watched him, eyes narrowing at his sudden discomfort. He must be dreaming of Dante.

With a disgusted smirk and fire dancing in her emerald-gold eyes, Kat ran her hand roughly across his torn chest, growling as he winced. Served him right. Always, always the same with everyone. Draw her in and push her anyway. Mode was no different.

"Why do you care?" She asked bitterly, standing smoothly from her perch on his lap and crawling into his bunk again. Curling on top of the covers, she buried her bloodied face in his pillow and shivered just slightly, tensing as she fought her hurt and tried to fall asleep once again.

Mode narrowed his eyes at the girl who lay in his bunk, her whole body shivering. What if she was just acting? He'd seen her play with the other boys that way, before she sent them to the infirmary. Was that what she was intending?

He knew how to find out.

He stood and crossed to his bunk, knelt down beside it on the right and slid the fingertips of his left hand into that silken jumble of curls. Tightening his grip, he lifted her head up and kissed her again, tasting his blood on her lips, wrapping his other arm around her supple waist. Her arms and legs remained free. She could strike him now, if she wanted to. At least he would be sure.

His slate eyes never closed.

She hissed as his fingers tightened into her curls, pulling her head up roughly as he kissed her, his other arm wrapping tightly around her waist. Kat tensed, muscles shifting as she shifted in his hold, the taste of his blood on her tongue and on her lips as she shoved him away from her.

He remained kneeled beside the bunk, his cold slate eyes watching her. Kat drew her feet under herself, crouched and watching him curiously, her head tilting slightly to the side as her cascade of curls drifted across her face. Her green eyes hardened, trying to analyze his motives, trying to calculate what he might do next. It both frightened and excited her to think that perhaps this time, he meant no harm.

But she wasn't accustomed to any form of affection. Jax had been appropriately rough, up until she'd disposed of him; but her love for him had never reached this stage, had never gone beyond anything except a few innocent kisses when she was younger. It wasn't tenderness or softness that she appreciated. Kat had always grown up with pain, using force and aggression to keep herself alive.

She needed that fierceness in a mate.

Mode continued to stare at her as she sat poised, still meeting his gaze squarely. Her muscles stopped shaking with hurt, tensed instead with predatory lust for this one person who was using his strength against her. He hadn't cared what she felt when he'd kissed her just a few moments ago. In some twisted way, that was exactly what she'd wanted.

Her canines appeared, sharp as she drew her lips back in a smirk, her head tilting to the other side as she studied him, waited for a reaction. None. Suddenly shifting, Kat pounced from the bunk, knocking Mode over onto his back as she crouched over him, her long curls falling down over his face to hide them both. Her locket and ring dangled from the chain around her throat, resting lightly on his bloody chest, and with a purr Kat leaned over and kissed Mode savagely, her tongue finding his and their blood mixing as he bit her lip hard enough to split the skin. A deep growl rumbled, and she finally closed her eyes and kissed him again.

She shoved him away and stared at him, lynx eyes swirling with indefinable emotion. The locket lay against her chest, reminding him of the little amulet Dante had worn. When she pounced on him, knocked him over, he expected that. His experience with the opposite sex had been brief, but instructive. Displays of affection were always followed by violence, sooner or later, but this time he wasn't going to give her the leeway he'd given Dante.

When she brought her face down to his he bit her as he wrapped his hands around her forearms, preparing to shove her away when she started scratching. Her blood touched his tongue, but she wasn't biting him as he'd thought.

She was kissing him.

His slate eyes widened as they met hers. He let her lip go, but she didn't pull away. She'd kissed him and he'd injured her in return. He'd seen enough of what she'd done to the boys at the Institute to know this was strange behavior for her. Did she really have some sort of affection for him past the wary friendship they shared? His thoughts were interrupted as she kissed him again, split lip and all.

His eyes narrowed, and his fingers tightened on her upper arms, this time to hold her to him. He was tired of attempting to analyze. At least Kat was up front about the violence she intended to inflict. She didn't pretend to be weak and passive as she dug her fingernails into his arms. He didn't pretend to be gentle; his grip was undoubtedly going to leave her with bruises. With a single smooth motion he braced and rolled, flipping them over and pinning her to the floor of the cell. He pressed her wrists to the tile and studied her face, cold eyes taking in her split lip, the tiny trickle of blood that ran from the corner of her mouth, vampiric.

She wasn't Dante. The animal gleam in her gaze had never touched those violet eyes. Until the end, she'd been gentle, passive...innocent. So had he. He wasn't any more. He felt no remorse now as he looked down at the damage he'd done. He felt nothing at all but anger at her for threatening his icy control and a lust to use her as she wanted to use him.

He released her wrists as he sat up gracefully, his knees on either side of her hips. She could fight him if she wanted to; he didn't care. The muscles in his cheek tightened as he ripped her undershirt from neckline to hem, the material parting easily under his force. The sight of her muscles tensing under her skin, under the numerous little scars, made him slow down, and he placed his hand flat against her tight stomach, fingers spread as his eyes met hers again, daring a challenge.

The predatory gleam in her emerald-gold eyes shifted as Mode responded roughly to her kisses, gripping her arms with tight, bruising fingers as he rolled them over, pinning her and sitting on her hips. Kat's focused blurred slightly, and she watched his jaw clench angrily as he ripped her shirt away, his hands tearing the material as if it were paper. She tensed instinctively, her muscles rippling as he placed his spread hand on her stomach, his cold eyes daring her, mocking her, challenging her to action.

Kat suddenly felt trapped.

Her pupils slitted dangerously in the dim light, watching Mode with calculated anger. He was stronger than her; so much stronger, his shoulders broad and body muscled far more than hers could ever be. She possessed her own lithe strength, but nowhere near his, and this knowledge spurned her into action. Bloodlust lit in her eyes, her bloodied lips drawing back to snarl at him as adrenaline surged through her veins and her survival instinct overrode whatever rationality she'd held before. Kat was no different than any other cornered animal. Fear brought aggression, and that defensive rage melded uncontrollably with her lust for him.

Arching forward suddenly, she grabbed the hand that he held to her abdomen, nails digging into the nerve complex in his unprotected inner wrist. Raising her other arm swiftly, she wrapped her fingers around his throat, tight enough to feel his pulse quicken, pounding against her fingertips. His own steeled eyes narrowed as she strained to throw him off her, struggling madly against him, her hips pinned to the floor by the weight of his body. She couldn't escape... she hissed helplessly, still fighting, unwilling to give in. And for the first time in years, Kat felt the same despair she'd been drowned with the night the army gang at the Institute held her in the backroom and stripped her nearly naked, ready to use her the same way she was sure Mode wanted her now.

He'd saved her then. Only she could save herself now.

That is, if she even wanted to be saved...

Twisting in his grasp, Kat bucked against Mode, muscles straining as a nearly silent animal whine was torn from her throat. Her eyes shifted to a sharp serpentine green as her fingers tightened into his throat, pulling his face down toward hers. With a sudden unexpected smirk, she licked the blood from his lips and fought to press herself closer to him, even as he held her back.

Her smirk made him angrier. She was playing with him. Not anymore.

Mode freed his wrist of her fingers with a careless flick and caught her own with one hand, ripping her fingertips away from her throat as he fastened his other hand around hers and brought her face up to his, her front against his. He stared down into her face as he moved closer, pulled her tighter against him as he prepared to put an end to her games.

The look in her eyes froze him, and shame he didn't think he was still capable of feeling flooded through him in a torrent. He remembered that look, the wide-eyed bereft half-madness that had been in her eyes the night he'd found her with the army brats crawling on her... and he was doing the same thing now. He was no better than they were.

The Angel had fallen, but not that far.

He dipped his head and kissed her gently, his fingers till holding her tightly in place. He wouldn't let her hurt him, but he wasn't going to let himself hurt her either, not until he was sure she wanted it like he did.

Her heart leapt into her throat as Mode ripped himself from her grasp, wrapping his fingers around her own throat and pulling her face close to his. The coldness in his gaze burned her despair and desperation brighter, and Kat tried to tug away as he leaned down and kissed her with a sudden gentleness that frightened her even more. His strong hands still held her wrists together tightly, but some detached part of her stopped struggling, pressed her own bare torso against his chest and nuzzled her face into his neck. Mode tensed as Kat managed a ragged purr, her clenched muscles loosening just barely as she shivered once and froze.

She could feel his heart beating rapidly, a staccato that matched her own as she pulled away, silent as her green-gold eyes widened, flicking across his poised body as he continued to hold her wrists tightly. Kat's breathing quickened as he met her gaze unwavering, his eyes muting to smoke for a moment so brief she wasn't quite sure she'd seen it. But that almost indetectable softening raised her lust again, and with sinuous grace she lowered her head, watching him with predatory anticipation in her eyes as her curls half-obscured the smirk that twitched her lips.

Oh, what a mate she'd found...

He still didn't trust her.

He moved her wrists down, behind her, and secured them there easily with one hand. The other he used to draw a fingertip delicately down her side, pausing to trace the long slender scar there before trailing his hand back up to her upper back as he leaned in, pushing the side of his cheek against her temple in a rough gesture of affection. He put his mouth next to her ear and breathed warm air into it as he held her to him, his free hand toying with the soft skin of her shoulder as he slid the torn cloth further down her arm.

Kat barely refrained from lashing out at Mode as he traced the long scar that ran down her ribcage and side, but couldn't help tensing tightly, with all the look of a caged animal straining at her bonds. He was scaring her, the way he held her hands behind her back, and she literally thrummed with restrained fright as he kept her helpless. Mode moved nearer, pressing against her as he breathed into her ear, and Kat hissed, flicking her head away from him. But then he began to slide her shirt further off her shoulders, and utterly uncertain, Kat felt her heart beating faster at his touch.

She rubbed her face cat-like against his own, purring softly to herself at the contact. His hot skin against her own bare torso and arms caused her eyes to dilate wildly as she pulled away a little and watched him. He still had her wrists immobile, and Kat tugged a little, the muscles in her arms straining. "Mode..." she whispered. Her slightly pleading gaze was enough of a question for him as she pulled again, her eyes beginning to narrow as he held her.

He saw her muscles tense in the dim light, felt the tiny pressure she put on his hand holding her wrist as she tested his strength. She wanted free...but she'd already cut him once this evening. Those fingernails were dangerous.

But if he couldn't trust her that far, why was he still holding her against him?

He looked into her eyes for a long moment before he inclined his head to kiss her shoulder where it met her neck and released her wrists, his muscles involuntarily tensing.

He finally let her go, and Kat pulled away slightly, crawling backwards from him before she paused. Crouched on all fours, she blinked slowly, her pupils almost entirely black as she watched him carefully, quietly, like a curious little kitten finding itself a new playmate. He'd kissed her again, still gently, on her neck... Kat tilted her head slightly, the ring on the chain around her neck jangling against her collarbones.

Kat ran her own fingers along the scar he'd traced, still eyeing him silently. That scar, knife fight, but her rival had gotten off far worse. That had been her first injury from fighting, the time she'd challenged the leader of the gang at her groundschool. She almost frowned as her gaze traced over Mode's body, surprised at his lack of battle scars. Crawling over to him, she ran her fingertips lightly along his smooth skin, avoiding the slashes she'd given him as she looked up curiously into his steely eyes. "No scars, Mode. No fights?"

He forced himself to relax, her touch sending tingles out in little concentric circles. She was teasing again...but it was warmer, this time. He sat back on his heels, rested his hands on his thighs and looked at her coolly.

"The only people I ever lost to didn't have time to mark me, Kitten." The other fights he'd been in while he was at the institute had been minor enough...and dodging was something he did well. "You were there for this one." He lifted his once-injured hand briefly as he flicked his eyes over her nearly nude form. "You don't dodge much, do you?" he said with a half-smirk that lacked the chill it normally held, his eyes softening a little as they took in the multitude of scars.

Kat followed his gaze to her torso, her battle marks shining pale against her tan skin in the dim light of the room. So many, he was right... her sharp eyes muted to emerald, and her lips twitched down reflectively. She reached absentmindedly toward the locket around her slender throat, fingering the ring as her other hand traced the line that ran along her lower abdomen. Kat sighed quietly to herself, biting her lip as she glanced up at Mode.

"No," she said shortly, bitterly. "And there are some you just can't dodge." Kat flicked her eyes away from him then, turning and lowering her head so that she was hidden behind her curls. "But you know that."

"Yes." The subtle undercurrent of sadness in his voice startled him a little, and he looked at the waterfall of curls that obscured her face. Kat had been fighting for her life - and everything else - since she was eight. What could he do that would possibly make up for that? Nothing at all.

But he understood, as well as anyone could. He'd only spent two years in that hellhole, but it had been enough. Pain was relative. This girl was broken in a fundamental way...but so was he. Their pain united them together in a way no one else would comprehend.

"Kat..." he trailed off, and then began again, tilting his head slightly and studying her hidden face, trying to see through the curls to the expression beyond. "What is it you want from me? You've got enough scars. "

What did she want? Kat wasn't so sure herself, glancing up at Mode sharply, her eyes now glowing serpentine. She wanted safety for once, security; she was tired of living her life as a stray, always watching in every direction at once. But she'd grown used to expecting little, if nothing, from anyone. Whatever Mode wanted, she was certain she'd need even less. A bed to sleep in. Someone to play with. And the knowledge that Mode, unlike Jax or any of the others she'd ever been with, wasn't going to stab her in the back.

"You can't hurt me, Mode." She ran a fingertip along his bare chest gently, before pulling away with a half-heartedly malicious smirk of her own. "Just don't try to kill me, and that's all I ask, neh?" With a tilt of her head, Kat's eyes narrowed and she uncurled herself, trying to stretch seductively but failing as she trembled a little.

He could live with that.

He stood, taking her easily in his arms. She weighed little. He paused long enough to pluck the last of the torn material from her before he laid her on his bunk, using the ruined shirt to wiped the blood from his chest before tossing it aside and joining her.

He wasn't sure who of the two of them was more surprised when he laid his head on her bare chest, soft flesh against his cheek. He put an arm across her, his hand on the outside of her thigh, and traced a slow tiny line from her waist to her knee and back again.

It took the time from when Mode carried her to the bed, stripping her torn shirt away and laying down beside her, to when he rested his head on her torso and began tracing lines on her leg for Kat to fully realize what was happening. His gentle fingertips caused her thigh to tense, and she shivered a little against him, eyes flashing. Twining her fingers into his short white-blonde spikes, she lifted his head, watching his reaction carefully as she closed her eyes and kissed him roughly, hungrily, her lips seeking his as she shifted in his grasp.

She kissed him again, and when she opened her eyes he read the desire there. His cold eyes narrowed a little, but he didn't smile. He wouldn't mock her, not about this. She wanted, and he would give. For now.

He ran his hands over her torso as he kissed her, his deft touch eliciting tiny growls and hisses of pleasure when he broke away to nuzzle her neck in a catlike caress before sliding down her body. Pain registered as her fingernails bit into the back of his neck when he took the last of her clothing away, but he ignored it, his own clothing easily removed as he kissed her stomach.

She was too tense, the muscles in her legs too tight. He bit the inside of her thigh and she hissed in shock, forgetting to tense her legs long enough for him to move them. Everything felt planned, like he'd done this hundreds of times before and just didn't remember.

His touch had her well-relaxed and trembling when he finally moved his face over hers, brushing her cheek with his own as he whispered hot breath into her ear. His heartbeat was rapidly accelerating, and his exquisite muscular control was sorely strained to keep him where he was. It would be so easy, not to pause...

But pause he did, his warm breath on her neck. This was her last chance to escape, and he would let her have it.

Kat felt detached at first, as if she were sitting nearby and watching Mode run his hands over her, her body cold and unresponsive to his touch. But she quickly found herself twisting under his fingers, and no one was watching from afar as she hissed with pleasure, trying to arch up to meet him as he kissed her, touched her smoothly.

But she was tense, her muscles straining even as her heart pounded wildly, her eyes slitting as he leaned down and bit at her thigh. In surprise she hissed again, her momentary lethargy giving him enough time to push himself closer, and Kat melted as he moved to breathe into her ear, his muscles trembling against her. She calmed her own breathing enough to speak, her voice husky. "Mode..." Then she wrapped her arms around his shoulders, digging her fingernails into the bare skin of his back as she nipped at his throat, purring hoarsely.

Burying his face against her neck, he nipped at her throat as he took her.

He was quick about it, but the effort and the sensation pulled an unsteady gasp from him anyway, and he was forced to stop and breathe as he attempted to regain control. When he found it it was tenuous and fragile at best, but he forced himself to move slowly at first until her body began to relax.

He hadn't expected her inexperience. The Institute was a harsh place, and Kat was a very pretty girl. He had assumed...but he had been wrong, and that knowledge made him keep his pace until the purr in her throat and the fingernails scratched down his back demanded more.

He became rougher as she did, even biting gently on her split lip when she dug in a little too hard. His control began to slip. His breath into her mouth came more and more quickly. He was aware of her tensing beneath him, her lithe body nearly lifting his own as he dropped to his elbows, slipping his hands under her head, winding into her hair and pulling her close, kissing her hard.

The pains of the knife and the pains of her fights was nothing compared to the fire she felt as Nathan took her for the first time.

Kat managed a sharp intake of breath as he stopped, panting rapidly as she leaned her head back and closed her eyes, digging her fingernails into his back. He moved slowly at first, until her muscles relaxed of their own accord and she felt warmth building, and then she turned more rough. A purr tore from her throat as he came up for a kiss, biting her lip enough so that a trickle of blood leaked from the corner of her mouth. But she didn't even notice, arching against him as he fell to his elbows, wrapping his hands into her curls and kissing her hard.

It was then she realized what was happening... what she'd somehow managed to fight away for eight years, she'd just surrendered to this white-spiked boy so much like Jax. Kat's eyes flicked open at the ill-timed thought, and wrapping her legs around his, pressing the heels of her feet into the crooks of his knees, she braced and pushed off, rolling him over until she crouched on his hips. Mode's eyes were half-closed as she peered down at him, her own face flushed and partway obscurbed by the tousled curls that dropped into her eyes. She tensed again, muscles moving beneath her skin as she twisted and dropped onto his chest, keeping her face right above his.

He was too far gone to register surprise when she rolled them over, staring up at her face through half-closed eyes, her flushed skin making her pale scars stand out a little more, her chest rising and falling rapidly as she shifted up, her curls falling into her face before she tossed her head to clear them and leaned over him, her eyes centimeters from his. Her eyes were narrowed, her canines showing just a little. She looked every inch the dangerously excited feline.

He played his eyes over her face, the cold slate shifting back and forth to smoke as the last tatters of his ice began to strain. He raised his hand and stroked her cheek with a single finger. He made no move to restrain her, but the urge was there; her sudden assertion of control made him wary, but he was nearly past caring.

He slid his hands up her thighs to her hips, guiding her into movement as he touched her lips with his own before moving his hands up her back. His palms caressed the skin before he brought them back to her waist and gripped, kissing her smooth slender throat as he ground against her, his uneven breath growing more pronounced.

If Mode had ever picked the precisely perfect time not to strain her already fragile control, it was now.

Kat hissed as he held her waist tightly, grinding against her with a sudden roughness she wasn't capable of handling. Baring her canines in an angry snarl, she lashed out irrationally at him, oblivious to Mode beneath her, seeing only an older, harder version of Jax that frightened her. Her backhand knocked his head to the side as she pushed his hands away from her hips, crawling awkwardly and frantically from his bunk toward her own. Her muscles were trembling as she burrowed into her covers, hiding her face with an almost silent hiss to herself. "Not Jax... it's not Jax..."

He let her go.

His jaw ached. He ignored it.

He'd given her exactly what she wanted. He'd done everything he could to make it easy for her. She'd been enjoying as much as he had, surely, for a few moments at least.

And then she struck him and fled, muttering something about Jax, one of her old "friends" from BattleSchool that she'd said disappeared. She'd said it with a smile on her face. What the hell had brought him up now of all times?

He said nothing. There was nothing to say. It appeared she was done with him for now. He had fulfilled whatever twisted purpose she had required him for and he was of no further use. His eyes slitted, and he clenched his teeth. Used. Again.

Or had he imagined her desire? His anger turned to uncertainty. He replayed the situation in his mind. It seemed as if she were appropriately enthusiastic...but in the aftermath he felt less like he had been in control. He remembered the look in her eyes when he'd torn her shirt and bit his tongue hard to keep his eyes from watering.

Mode felt unclean.

Her breathing slowed gradually as she calmed down and fell asleep. Silently he crept to her bedside and looked down at her. Coppery curls framed her tear-stained face on the pillow, and he looked away for a moment.

When he looked back, his eyes fell on the locket.

She was dead to the world, but he knelt and opened the little heart with thieving stealth. Inside the first half was a picture of Kat, impossibly young, with a wide smile, her smooth child's cheek free of the scar that was there now. In the other half was a picture of a little boy that might have been his younger brother. His hair was white-blonde and spiked as he wore his now, face stamped with the same brand of hardness that his had acquired at the Institute. It was clearly not him; this boy had black eyes and rougher features. But it was close enough to be unsettling.

He closed the locket quietly, laid it gently down before he picked up the ring and examined it.

Kat and Jax Forever... ran the inscription.

This boy was Jax? The one she'd helped to disappear?

Mode suddenly got the feeling he'd taken just a bit more than he could handle when he'd allowed Kat to invite herself into his bed.

He retreated back to his bunk, leaving the ring and the locket on her. He was worn out, frustrated, angry...and concerned. He admitted the last to himself only after some serious struggling. He closed his eyes and weariness began to take over.

Maybe tomorrow he would discover some way to undo the damage he'd done.

For right now he only wanted rest.

For a few blissful seconds in the morning dark, Kat lounged in bed and dreamed of nothing.

Then the lights clicked on, and everything came rushing back.

Her eyes opened automatically as light shone through her closed lids, and with a start she was sitting up in bed, back against the wall and legs drawn up to her chest. She flicked her gaze around the room nervously, finally settling on Mode's sleeping form in the opposite bunk. Mode. Kat sighed wearily to herself, all too painfully aware of what had happened between them last night. Not Jax, her mind kept replaying endlessly, a broken recording. Not Jax, it's not him, it's Mode...

But the resemblance last night had seemed far more striking than it did this morning as she watched him sleep, saw how he barely breathed, his long blond lashes almost indistinguishable against his cheeks. The coldness in him last night, the hardness to his face as he took her had been overwhelming, and in all the confusion of pleasure and pain she'd lost control, had struck out at him. Kat's heart warmed, just slightly, causing her to draw her still-bloodied lip down into a frown.

She felt... remorse?

It had to be. Mode had been rough, bruising, but she had wanted him too, and could lay no blame. He'd been tender, enough to frighten her, so unused to affection or softness. But maybe, she tried to reason, that's what I needed. Fingering the locket nervously, trying to calm herself, she finally got up enough nerve to crawl from her bunk and step over to his.

Standing over him, her normally sharp eyes softened, and Kat sighed. It was remorse she felt, guilty for losing her control so irrationally and striking out at him, at the one time they both needed to feel trusting, safe. Shaking a little, she slid into the bunk at his feet, curling into a little ball as she closed her eyes, the looping record still playing onward, tirelessly. Just Mode, not Jax...

Asmodeus was already awake this time when she crawled in, curling at his feet instead of beside him. The almost subservient symbolism she employed wasn't lost on him. The message was painfully clear. She was sorry, and requested forgiveness.

He didn't want her to be sorry. He didn't want to forgive her. He wanted to be angry. He wanted to hit her and leave her alone as she'd done to him last night. The muscles of his arms tensed. He was tired of caring. He'd nearly managed to cut it out entirely last night, but his emotion had tripped him at the last moment. Despite his best intentions, he'd been gentle. Tender.

And then she'd lost her mind and struck him and stumbled away, muttering about Jax.

He remembered the picture in the locket he'd seen, of the boy who looked somewhat similar to him. She'd done something to him, something awful...what could drive a young girl to do that to someone she obviously cared about?

He needed to understand that before he could attempt to understand her...but he partially forgave her anyway, against his better judgement. Sighing, he sat up and forward enough to wrap his arm around her waist and pull her up the bed and against him, his front to her back. He didn't kiss her, just kept her embraced closely, his eyes on the tangle of red-gold before him.

"Tell me about Jax, Kat," he said quietly. He was willing to forgive her conduct if she was willing to provide the information he required. If Kat really was mad and intended to kill him because he happened to resemble one of her old acquaintances, he wanted to know now.

It seemed as if Mode was going to forgive her, and Kat relaxed slightly, letting him pull her toward him, settling her back against his stomach as he wrapped his arms around her. Almost content, she closed her eyes, a silent sigh whispering past her lips.

"Tell me about Jax, Kat."

Every muscle in her tensed just briefly, a sudden tightening of her body that was gone before she could control it. But Mode had felt it, and Kat's relief at forgiveness turned to cold defensiveness. She'd apologized, as best she could, for losing herself last night. Now he had to go and bring up the most painful memories she possessed, her worn scars still smarting after all these years. Jax. Jax...

"What about him, merdana? He is nothing." Her tone was carefully nonchalant, cool as she remained elusive. There were some things Mode should never know... and whether this was one of them or not, Kat was frightfully uncertain.

That was not the answer he was looking for.

He'd felt her body tense when he mentioned his name. She tried to control it, but he felt it anyway. Her sudden defensiveness made him wary of her again, but he forced himself to stay relaxed. They were just chatting now.

He tightened his arms around her, but not as gently as before.

"Should it be, 'He was nothing, Kitten?'" he asked, his voice a little less tender than before. "Or do you intend to return his ring when you graduate?"

Numbed by her own icy defensiveness, Kat ignored Mode as best she could, forcing herself to not even acknowledge his roughened embrace, his strong arms tightening hard against her. Even his voice was hardened, and Kat felt the same wicked little possessiveness she'd always had flame at his question.

"Perhaps you should learn to listen more carefully, Mode," she spat, voice husky. "I said, he is nothing. And you can't return something to someone who doesn't exist." Let him think that one over. Kat smirked to herself, green eyes morphing to cold serpentine and narrowing dangerously.

"I see," he said at last, his voice quiet again. He released her and sat up, cold eyes staring down at her coiled form. He remembered her smiling when she talked about his ... disappearance. He had little doubt now of what the circumstances might have been. If she hadn't killed him herself, she'd left him in a bad enough way that he hadn't made it back.

"You must have been devastated." The tinge of sarcasm he was unable to conceal crept into his voice as he turned away.

"Oh, of course I was devastated." Kat purred menacingly, sitting up and reaching out to run a fingernail down the line of his spine as he sat facing away from her. "Poor, poor J-Bear. He left me and he got what he deserved." Suddenly bitter, she dropped her hand and moved to crawl from the bunk, stopped as Mode grabbed her arm in tight fingers and pulled her back. Sprawled on the bed, she shook the curls from her eyes and hissed quietly at him.

Asmodeus yanked her back to face him, his eyes diamond hard as they met hers.

"Three things, Kitten. One. The next time you plan a midnight visit, ask. Two. Do not fuck with me. You won't catch me like you caught your little friend, and if I get the impression you'd like to try, I might do something rash. Three." He pulled her close to him roughly, releasing her arm and embracing her, kissing her with the same hungry passion they'd shared last night. When he finally broke it, his eyes were smoke for almost a full second before returning to the normal hard slate, his features hardened with frustrated concern. "I'm not going to leave you, Kat. Are you angry with me or not?"

His sudden, blunt anger was not a surprise, and Kat kissed him just as roughly as he held her tightly, running her tongue against his and pressing herself to him. But it was his next question that stabbed at her fragile control, and her face contorted with pain and anger. Shoving him away, Kat stumbled from his grasp, muscles quivering as she stood before him, her fiery curls as hot as her temper.

"Not going to leave me? You say that now, they've all said it, too many times and it's never true! Why should I believe you, Mode, what makes you so much different than the rest?! Jax loved me and he left, he paid for it, you don't love me, I don't see how you can even say that!" Kat reached from her throat, tightening her fingers around the delicate chain as she yanked, the necklace breaking into her hands. With bright rage she threw it hard against the wall, chest heaving as she whirled on Mode again, cold eyes narrowing. "Silent now, you are, I know how it always ends!"
