With Donovan following closely behind, Dom palmed open the portal to their quad cell and stepped inside, tossing his desk carelessly onto the bunk nearest him. Seating himself on the edge of his own bed, he kicked off his boots, pulling the shirt over his head before slipping from the rest of his uniform and rolling onto his back. With folded arms behind his head, his indigo eyes narrowed slightly as he stared at the ceiling above, chest rising slowly as he hummed in idle concentration.

A few moments of silence passed before he turned onto his side, glancing down at his twin with a small twitch of his lips that signified approval. "Good choice, brother." He then returned to his position, closing his eyes in anticipation of their usual analysis. He pictured Dante in his mind, those piercingly cold eyes, and smiled to himself. Good choice indeed.

Donovan was comfortable enough in his uniform trousers, content to remove his jacket and undershirt before lounging back on his bunk, left boot braced against the metal frame, the right resting on his left ankle. They had only been bothered with uniforms during society training. Until then all four of them had worn the loose fitting dark grey soft cotton clothing of the Creche. He smiled a little as he remembered Madeleine and Melissa as they reacted to the underclothing they were expected to wear in "polite" society. No, plain uniform trousers didn't bother him at all.

"Good choice, brother," came Dom's voice from above, and he returned the momentary smile before his twin's face vanished behind the upper bunk again. They both spent a few minutes organizing their thoughts before they began the analysis. Don always spoke first.

"She's in Phoenix, and Nicolai hasn't yet. Ice. I would estimate no one has. A real challenge, Dom. But who goes first?"

Dominic pondered that in silence, tapping his fingertips against his bare stomach as he ran his own mental calculations. If Nicolai hadn't caught her yet, there stood a good chance he was trying. Dom hadn't missed the carefully concealed interest that the other boy had when he watched the girl. Entering another hunter's territory could be risky business. Dante herself presented even more of a challenge; he felt some measure of understanding for her icy demeanor. What had happened during her time as commander at BattleSchool, however briefly explained in her file, was undoubtedly the cause. More information would be needed before a workable strategy could be plotted. He would concede first strike to Donovan-- he felt certain his brother wouldn't get very far, which would leave him more time to plan his own attack.

"Would you care to take the honors, Don? You are certainly right; this will prove to be difficult." Short, precise... like everything he said, like himself. He rolled to the edge of the bunk, hung carelessly down to stare quietly at his twin. Unable to shake this target from his mind, he frowned slightly and nodded to Don. "Quicksilver and ice. What can we use?"

Don grinned up at his brother. "Giving up already? How disappointing, Dom." He grin turned into a small smile as he considered methods of attack. "Nicolai hasn't. Flashboy doesn't work on this one. Let's try direct." That mode of operation had won them victories in the past with the girls who were tired of the overplayed attention of Nicolai's style. They were a little ahead this time. They already knew at least one route that had been tried unsuccessfully.

Dom's nod of agreement came seconds before their greens entered, interrupting further possibility of worthwhile conversation. These two boys were new, fresh from the shuttle two days ago, and completely intimidated by their veteran status and synchronization. Six months until graduation was going to be a long time with the greens in here to cramp their style, but Don knew they would manage.

He closed his eyes and thought of those red ringlets spread out on his pillow and smiled.

He dreamed of Dante that night, but nothing like the normal dreams he had. Instead, she was seated in the observatory like before, vast space around her like a starry cloak, and those mercurial silver eyes froze him before he could move. Someone appeared beside her... Donovan, smirking triumphantly as he wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her toward him. Dom's own indigno eyes narrowed. He'd always shared with his brother; they traded identities, lives, girls. He wanted something to himself. He wanted her.

Dominic woke feeling incredibly selfish and relieved to find his twin sleeping soundly in the bunk below him.

Waiting until his features regained their normal mask of reserve, he leaned over the edge of his bed, throwing his pillow down to hit Don with a muffled thwack. The boy sat up suddenly in bed, and with a tiny twitch of his lips, Dom grinned at his surprise. "Morning, brother. Time we started."

Without another word he hopped nimbly down from his bunk, ignoring the two greens still snoring quietly in the opposite beds. Pulling his uniform on as Don did the same, he hummed lightly to himself in anticipation.

Don completed his dressing with a smirk as Dominic finished tying his boots. His brother was eager for this one, more than novelty could account for. Never one to engender discord, he picked up his desk and nudged Dom's arm with his own as his brother gathered his own materials.

"You *sure* you don't want first chance, brother mine?"

"Why do you ask? Afraid you'll have to concede to me, like the last time?" Dom raised an eyebrow in feigned mockery as he smiled slightly at his brother. "Don't worry. I'm sure you'll do just fine." Don laughed at that, palming open the door and motioning for him to exit first. With a curt nod that did nothing to hide the laughter in his own dark eyes, he strode from the barracks, desk held under his arm, and together they walked side-by-side to plan their attack.

Don grinned, a little less good-naturedly. "I always do "just fine", Dom. Some girls have better taste than others." His grin turned wicked. "Wouldn't you agree?" He palmed the door open and followed Dom out into the Hallway.

Donovan heard the door to his quarters shut behind her, and he pressed his palm to the lock without turning back to her. She began to move to sit down. "Stay where you are," he said, his voice low, cold and commanding. He heard her freeze, and had no doubt she was icing over again. Too bad, for now. He had to move quickly, before he lost his nerve.

He unzipped his jacket, and he heard her slight intake of breath, but the door remained locked, and he didn't turn around to see if she was trying to escape. The undershirt went next, and quickly, and he stood bare from the waist up and bowed his head.

Silence. He couldn't bring himself to turn around.

The ice started to recrystallize around her the moment he demanded she stop moving, and an unvoluntary gasp of disbelief was torn from her throat as he unzipped his jacket, divesting himself of his shirt. Her head whipped toward the locked door, back towards him, and Dante was about to flee when she noticed the small mark on the back of his neck.

He wasn't moving, just bowed his head and froze in place and didn't say a word. Her amethyst eyes tried to focus on his mark, but she found herself taking a few shaky steps closer, finally standing on her toes to see. It was a tattoo, thin black barcodes at the base of his neck, and she ran her fingertips lightly over the raised brand as he shivered.

"Donovan?" her voice was low, whispery. "What's that for?"

Her touch made him shiver. No one touched that brand, not their targets, not his brother. He didn't even like touching it. It was reminder of what he was...and what he wasn't. He was property. He wasn't free...and he was only part of a set. By himself, he was incomplete, always. "It's my designation code," he answered tonelessly. "All of the Creche children have one. They use it to tell my brother and I apart from one another."

All his words were unfamiliar to her, and she found herself more bewildered than before. Designation code? Creche? She knew that Donovan and Dominic were twins; surely everyone could tell they were identical. But... that identical? Dante didn't know what in the world he was alluding to.

She moved her hand from his tattoo, rested it gently on his back, feeling his muscles tense beneath her fingers. He still refused to look at her, his voice as monotone and flat as hers was under ice, and Dante's eyes flashed silver briefly, confused. "I... I don't understand. Creche? What do you mean?"

She knew nothing. He was going to have to explain it. His jaw clenched.

"The Creche is where my brother and I were decanted." He used the word the scientists had used, his voice still flat. "We were raised as a set to match another pair, Madeleine and Melinda, in their breeding program. The Creche is government-funded, and they chose to assign us here after we came of age instead of giving us Earthside duty. When our training here is complete, they will either take us back to the Creche or let us go on to the Command Post. Either way, we remain their...property."

He had never voiced this aloud before. With his brother, there had been no need. With anyone else....it had never been an issue. He still couldn't bring himself to face her, but his knees grew weak, and he reached a hand out to steady himself against the top bunk he stood next to.

Whatever answer she had been expecting in response to her inquiry, his short explanation was as far from it as she might have feared. Donovan was a lab baby. She'd heard of those places on Earth, where they raised children for breeding and the military... but it was a passing thing, one of those brief stories you hear once and forget quickly, don't really understand or believe. She hadn't thought he was completely serious at first, but the shakiness of his demeanor proved his truth.

Dante didn't know what to say.

He'd leaned his hand out, bracing himself against the higher bunk, as if to steady himself. She pulled her hand away from his back, hesitated, completely shocked in lethargy for a long moment. He seemed so resigned, so lost within his own world that she could never fully comprehend, and the flatness to his voice saddened her.

She tried to speak. "Donovan, I..." but her voice trailed off before she got any further. What could she possibly say or do? Dante sighed then, lightly replacing her hand against the bare skin of his back as she took a step closer. "Donovan?"

He felt her hand withdraw.

He was prepared for that. He knew how most of the world regarded Creche children. Outrage, disbelief...disgust...he knew what to expect from the "normal" general public. He had broken his conditioning and told her for no reason he could understand, and here was the result. He had no one to blame but himself.

"Donovan, I..." She was trying to be kind about it, at least. He gave her time to think of her excuse. It was only polite, after subjecting her to his cruel, cold narration. She would make some simple, paltry excuse and leave, and he could sit down and tell himself that she wouldn't tell anyone, he wouldn't have to tell his brother...and maybe things could go back to the way they had been before.

And then her touch returned, her liquidly accented voice speaking his name, closer now. "Donovan?"

He turned slowly, twilight eyes glimmering quietly. He read in her face nothing but shock and sadness. It was blissfully free of pity...of the disgust he'd been sure he'd find. Her hand that had rested on his back was now over his heart, and he covered it gently with his own, holding her gaze tightly with his as he leaned in and kissed her softly.

She'd been certain that he'd shy away from her touch, ask her to leave, perhaps angry for having told her. And he had hesitated, breathing slowly and deliberately as she rested her hand on his back again, tried to put all her sadness for him into the one word she was capable of speaking.

He finally turned around, holding her small hand against his heart with his own larger palm, and she almost forgot to close her eyes as he leaned in for a kiss, so lost in those swirling midnight orbs that when his lips touched hers, she sighed in relief.

Identical twins, perhaps, but nothing like his brother.

Fear didn't strike her this time, anger burned away, and even the ice refused to come to her aid. Dante stood alone, helpless, and completely on her own as her lips moved softly beneath his and she sighed again, quiet exhalation a whisper of breath against his skin.

For the first time since he'd left the Creche, a kiss took him beyond the physical and made him whole. For the briefest moment, as their lips met, Donovan felt complete without his brother by his side. A small part of him felt guilty for this, but as they slowly separated he looked into her stunningly violet eyes with no trace of silver left with nothing but gratitude and a soft hint of desire.

"Thank you," he said in a whisper just loud enough for her to make out, before he kissed her again, hands cupping her face delicately, as if he feared breaking her. The thick red curls touched his fingertips as he tilted his head bit more, deepening the kiss, at last finding a use for the expertise he had acquired for more than self-perpetuation.

Only angel kisses had been so gentle, but those were faint whispering memories of the past, and Donovan was here, his fingers brushing her cheeks as he kissed her deeply. Dante felt her lips began to tremble slightly, heart beating a staccato pulse that had nothing to do with anger or the ice, and her arm shook as she placed a bruised hand on Donovan's shoulder and leaned closer.

He'd thanked her; for what, she wasn't quite certain, but the gratefulness in his gaze had left her with no doubt. Always trapped in some game, macabre twists of fate, but this was none of those. Dante couldn't remember the last time she'd felt so safe, so happy, and this was so... so right. No fears or worries as the last remnants of her shield melted slowly to the ground, leaving her shivering as she felt Donovan's seeking touch, and she stood on her toes to press her lips against his.

He'd played this game out so many times, with so many girls...why was his heart beating so quickly? He felt...nervous, and he hadn't felt nervous in this part of the dance since he was fourteen. Anticipation of what to come was a part of it...but only a small part. He found himself studying her face, her body language, letting her tell him wordlessly what she wanted and doing only that, nothing more. It was enough, more than enough, and he wanted this to last.

He opened the collar of her uniform, kissed the smooth skin there as he hesitantly unfastened her jacket. He didn't remove it for her, just slid his hands under it to the small of her back, her undershirt still in place as he kissed her lips again, her cheek, her fluttering eyelid, before he drew back to drink in her eyes again, to make sure she was still with him.

Her tiny twinge of uncertainty disappated as Donovan virtually relinquished control to her, only leaning to kiss her throat gently, unzipping her jacket but leaving it in place. His hands were warm against the bare skin of her back, and as he pulled away slightly to plant kisses on her face, she smiled under his lips and slipped the coat off, dropping it to the floor.

The cold air on her shoulders made her shiver slightly beneath the thin undershirt, and seeking warmth, Dante laid both her hands on Donovan's chest as she took a step closer, pressing herself against his body. She sighed, tilting her head up to kiss his collarbone, his neck and the strong line of his jaw, before nuzzling her face against his shoulder and whispering. "You're welcome..."

He chuckled softly into her curls as she kissed him, the warmth in it making him smile as he placed his hands over her shoulders to steady her while he kissed her again. It was longer this time, and she melted, wavered, and he turned her gently around, seating her on the bunk, dropping his hands from her shoulders to her boots and untying them before he broke the kiss, tugging them away as he smiled almost shyly at her.

His own boots followed, and he joined her in his bunk, sitting back against the wall and tugging her into his lap to kiss her again, one arm wrapped around her bare shoulders as the other hand stroked her cheek.

This all seemed like a dream.

Smooth, fluid, as if she couldn't quite see the lines anymore. He laughed quietly, smiling as he kissed her, a deep intense kiss that made her knees feel weak and her heart beat erratically. Before she could react, melted in lethargy, he seated her on his bunk and tugged off her boots, removing his own and crawling into his bed, pulling her to him.

She curled in his lap, tilting her chin up to kiss him as he held her, fingers gripping her shoulder lightly, fingertips brushing her bruised cheek as she settled closer. She could feel his own heart pounding wildly, and she lay a hand against his chest, his life pulsing beneath her touch as the beats synchronized slowly as her breathing matched his. For the first time since her kiss with Angel in the infirmary, Dante found herself moving without thinking, letting herself go to the man who held her so gently. Her lips sought his a little more hungrily, a surprising move for her, and she forgot about the ice in favor of this fiery warmth she hadn't owned in so long.

She was kissing him now, and he let her. His perception was twisting, and it became harder for him to focus as he returned her kisses, a sweet confusion settling over him as he held her to him. All of this felt new, as if every time before had been only rehearsal.

Her kiss became a little rougher, and he responded accordingly. Fleeting images of Madeleine drifted through his mind, images he'd summoned at times during these sessions with other girls, but Dante sighed against him and they scattered and disappeared. Dante was real to him now, as real as she had been and all the girls since had not, and he wanted no one else.

His fingertips teased the edge of her undershirt, and he broke her kiss at last, a small breath escaping them both as he looked into her amethyst eyes, searching for her permission.

Startled reality snapped into place as she felt his fingertips brush her stomach, one arm still wrapped tightly around her shoulders. She still had her eyes closed when he pulled away, silent exhalation of warmth whispering from her throat, and she opened her eyes to stare into his midnight ones, darker violet than her own, laced with twilight.

Comprehension took a moment to set in, as she realized what he was asking her, question in his gaze and not in words. Her throat tightened, a few wayward crystals starting to reform, but some part of her she wasn't aware existed pushed them savagely away. She softened again, strangely unafraid, and leaned up to give him his answer in a kiss.

Her upper clothing came away easily, and he dropped it to the side as he cradled her once again, her smooth skin against his own. His kisses on her throat became more demanding, but he remained gentle as he took her from his lap and laid her down next to him, fingers playing over the bare skin of her upper torso before settling on her waist as his lips drifted lower.

He held her to him, her little sounds like tiny caresses as her hands slipped into his hair. It was getting more difficult to move slowly, but he didn't want to frighten her, and took his time before he moved back up to kiss her trembling lips, turning her on her side to face him as he lay next to her once again.

Unwilling thoughts of Nathan haunted her as Donovan kissed her, eliciting tiny whimpers of half pain, half pleasure. She remembered other, rougher touches, and she started to shiver, reality blurring once more. She was almost surprised to find herself unbound, and her hands moved to run her fingers through the black spikes of his hair, closing her eyes to feel his kisses.

Nothing like anyone she'd known before. Not Nathan, and his memory slipped away under Donovan's touch. He finally pulled away from his caresses, reclining on his side next to her, and his arm wrapped around her waist to pull her close, facing him. He kissed her lips, even as she trembled with fire, and Dante opened her eyes briefly to stare into his.

They remained that way for a long moment, gazes locked as she searched for any hints of malice, any signs of danger or pain. It was with relief and uncertainty that she found none, and she intertwined her fingers with his, curls tumbling over her bare shoulders and cheeks as she rested against him.

He closed his eyes, gently squeezing her fingers with his own and then placing her hand on his chest as he stroked the pale smooth plane of her back. She wanted...but she was hesitant. He wouldn't frighten her by taking her clothing too quickly. A few errant red curls were draped over his shoulder, and they pulled across his skin and fell away as he shifted to lie on his back, looking up into her violet eyes as he removed his own instead before kissing her again.

A blush whose source was only half innocent modesty pinked her cheeks, and she closed her eyes as he leaned up to kiss her again, her hands running down his chest of their own accord, treasuring his strength and warmth. So strong, so gentle with her, something that she had grown resigned to never finding again, and she reached around to play her fingertips along his back, feeling him tense and relax under her touch.

She sensed rather than felt the amulet slide from her pocket, nestling into the bed beside her. Her hand went down to retrieve it, cold chain and charm against her warm skin, and she lifted it uncertainly to hold tightly in her palm. She'd always given it to those who reached her, who were as close to her as she felt Donovan growing, but her once symbol of protection meant nothing. If she was going to give him anything, it couldn't be this worn amulet, her trinket that carried too much pain. He deserved something for himself, and himself only.

And so she slipped it back into her pocket, wrapped her arms around his neck to trace his brand as she tilted her chin up to kiss him once more.

His eyes snapped open when her fingertips touched his brand, and he pulled away enough to gaze at her intently. She knew what it meant. He'd spelled it out to her only minutes ago, and she had just run her fingers over it as if she were treasuring the way it felt, slightly raised against the rest of his skin.

His first reaction was anger, but it never reached his eyes. She wasn't mocking him. There was no disdain in those violet depths. It hadn't even been conscious on her part, that little caress. She had accepted it as a part of him, and continued to display affection. It didn't matter to her - at least, not enough to frighten her away. She trusted him, regardless.

Warmth flooded him, and he pressed his lips to hers again as his hands fell to her belt. Moments and a few practiced motions later she was free of her clothing as well, but he confined his touch to her back as he held her close, breaking the kiss to bury his face against her neck.

The heat of his bare skin pressed against hers made her shiver, breath catching in her throat as he kissed her, nuzzling his face into her neck. Goosebumps that had nothing to do with cold raised on her arms, his breath skipping across her chest as he breathed softly, her hands moving to run light fingertips along his jaw.

Dante had no need for her ice anymore, not with Donovan.

His warmth made her own burn brighter, and she whispered his name, not a question, just quiet acceptance. "Donovan..." He shifted to look up at her, indigo eyes so endless, and her violet deepened as she rested her fingers beneath his chin and tilted his face up for a kiss. Everything was automatic now, gestures fluid and with an ease she'd never known, and a sigh escaped her lips to flutter across his own.

She kissed him, and his restraint began to weaken. His hands moved over her more freely, gentle and demanding at once, drawing whispers and sighs of pleasure. This pattern was too familiar to him for a misstep, and when he finally pulled her to him and rolled them over to look up at her, her cheeks were flushed, her eyes alight with heat so far a cry from the ice that had haunted them before he nearly gasped.

He put hands on her shoulders and pulled her down to kiss him again, red curls falling around them like a shield as he moved his hands to her hips.

Quicksilver nevermore...

His touch was expert, knowing as he ran his hands over her skin, but that was lost on her as she sighed, eyes closed as her lips sought his. When he rolled them, she found herself sitting above him, staring down with wide violetfire eyes, her curls tumbling past her shoulders to brush lightly against his chest and face. Donovan pulled her down for a kiss, releasing her to place his hands on her hips, and a tiny hint of ice swirled silver in her gaze for the briefest moment, before she let him move her slowly.

A whimper escaped her throat as her arms suddenly buckled, unable to support herself as she sunk to his chest, panting and unable to catch her breath. Her face was obscured by her fiery locks as she shook, and through her veil she managed to raise her head enough to look at Donovan, pupils dilated wildly as her lips trembled.

Jaded as he might have been, he couldn't prevent the intake of breath as she took him, his twilight eyes widening as he felt her innocence before she slid to a halt against his hips.

Shocked, elated and a little ashamed, he turned them over gently, brushing the curls from her eyes and her flushed cheeks before he pressed his lips to the corner of her mouth. "Shh..." he whispered into her ear as he began to move above her, his shame dissolving as the balance became clear to him. Emotional love was as new to him as physical love was to her, and he would make sure she did not regret what was rapidly becoming the most intense experience of his life.

...love?

If this wasn't love, it would suffice.

She hadn't thought it could be like this. Everything in her life for the past few years had been twisted, brutal, painful. She expected only that, nothing more, and his tenderness was as new and overwhelming as the warmth that threatened to take her fragile icy control. She was surprised to find she didn't want it anymore, and relinquished herself to him, moving as he moved, eyes closed and breathing quick. Her heart burned, fire wiping clean the smudged memories of the past, and she found herself free of that pain.

At that moment, in Dante's world, there was only Donovan.

Her arms wrapped around his neck, fingers tightening into his hair as she whimpered, lips trembling beneath his as he kissed her softly. She sighed, a sound of sadness and loss for the love she might have held before in life, a whisper of love and peace as Donovan pulled her closer against him. Violet puddled in her eyes as she glanced up into his face, his wide indigo eyes locked on hers, and a tear that had no ties to pain or hurt slid down her cheek, and she smiled as she kissed him again.

The salt of her tear as he kissed it away touched his tongue as he let himself go.

She was still trembling beneath him, muscles just beginning to calm, and he said nothing as her eyes opened again to meet his, just leaned down and kissed her again. It was just as sweet as it had been before. He rested his chin on her shoulder, turning his head to the side and letting his eyelashes flicker against her cheek.

Her lips and cheeks were rose, her fair skin flushed, hair tousled, her lovely profile outlined as she tried to catch her breath. He never wanted to go anywhere ever again.

Her little ragged pants turned to whispered sighs as her breathing calmed, heart slowing, although she could still feel it pounding in her throat as Donovan's lips rested on the skin there, his eyelashes fluttering against her cheek. And finally, she stopped trembling, regaining control of herself enough to place her hands gently on his back and pull him to lay beside her.

He settled into the bunk, back to the wall, and Dante curled herself against his chest, bare skin sliding on his as she nested in his arms. Her chin tilted up to nuzzle into his neck, kissing his throat, feeling his body heat reflecting off of her and keeping her warm. She could feel her own flushed face, wayward locks curling over both their shoulders as her eyes closed. Hours, days could have passed, and she would have been perfectly content to stay with him here, forever.

Their silence continued as his own breathing slowed, and she reached up to run her fingers along his face, smooth roughness under her touch as she smiled, lips pressed to his collarbone.

Donovan opened his eyes to look down at her with a smile as she kissed him. He was overwhelmed, relieved that she was pleased, and enjoying the soft glow they had created together as he stroked her curls. Nothing was said. There was nothing to be said, and Donovan had spent his life in the company of someone with whom verbal communication was necessary only to clarify complex situations. He and Dante were of one tenderly content mind, and he was satisfied in their silence.

He felt like there was something he was overlooking, and it made him a little uneasy, but his mind wasn't focusing properly, and he couldn't bring himself to care. He had told her his secret...but she would keep it, he knew. He would have trusted her with anything she asked of him. Time passed, and he drew the blanket over them as they began to cool, cradling her close. Perhaps they slept, perhaps not, but the small notification bell for dinner woke them both.

He smiled down at her as she did up at him. "We must dress. The others will be back soon, and we need food." He kissed her and she smiled against his lips as he reached to the side of the bed and gathered her clothing, slipping it over her with the ease of long practice, gently pushing her hands away when she sought to intervene, tickling her when she got a little too insistent.

When she was dressed and smiling, he dressed himself and stood, stretching, before taking her into his arms and kissing her forehead. "Go ahead, dearest. I will follow shortly, I promise."

The past few hours had passed in a pleasant haze, and Dante found herself dressed and standing in Donovan's arms as he kissed her forehead. "Go ahead, dearest. I will follow shortly, I promise."

She couldn't help but smile at him shyly, still blushing pale pink, her fiery curls tousled down her shoulders. Leaning up on her toes to plant a kiss on his lips, she nodded, not needing to answer. Pulling away, Dante flashed him one last smile before moving to palm open the barracks door.

Dominic was standing on the other side, his own hand on the palmpad, ready to enter.

He gave her a surprised smile as his eyes ran over her face, and she paled, a little flustered as she glanced back to Donovan for reassurance. But he nodded, and she managed a small smile at Dominic, wisps of ice slipping back into her eyes as he took a step back to make room as she stalked from his cell and into the corridor, on her way to the mess hall.

When the last sign of her presence was gone, Dominic raised an eyebrow at his brother, a tiny smirk on his lips, the unspoken question in his indigo eyes.

Donovan met Dominic's eyes for only a moment before he was forced to look away, trying to hide the pain in his eyes. All of the calculation, the cold, the easy detachment of ignorance, it was all still living and evident in his brother's gaze. The words he had been formulating to say fell away before he could think of speaking them. Dominic would never understand what had just happened with Dante...but how could he keep something like this from him? Dominic knew him better than any "normal" person could know another. Already his brother's smirk was melting into a look of confusion. He loved his brother better than himself, and it hurt to see him this way.

The pain in Donovan's eyes didn't escape his notice, and neither did the avertion of his gaze, his reluctance to speak. Dominic had a sudden feeling that there was something very, very wrong... and it had something to do with Dante.

"Long time no see, brother. But it looks like you had a... visit... from Dante, eh? You blushing? Oh, don't tell me..." he punched Donovan lightly on the shoulder, grinning with triumph and a tinge of irritation. Damn, it appeared as if his brother had gotten to her first. Very well. What one had, the other took, sharing fair and square each time. Wouldn't be too much of a problem to feign Donovan's easygoing charm, and claim her for himself.

"C'mon, tell me what happened..."

Dominic wasn't equipped to understand what had happened. He wasn't sure he was either, as similar as they were, but he could feel his brother's growing unease behind their normal playful facade. He had to tell him something...but what?

"It..it wasn't like that, Dom," he said finally. He wouldn't lie to him. He couldn't. Dominic had to find out now, before he tried to trade, as they'd always done in the past. The thought of his brother with Dante sparked another new emotion in him, something he'd never felt with any sort of intensity before.

Jealousy.

"It wasn't like that at all." His tone changed, became a little colder, as he met his twin's gaze evenly.

His uneasy confusion was quickly changing to something else, something much deeper... and Dominic had a sinking angry sensation in his stomach about what had happened. It wasn't like what at all? He just didn't understand.

Hunts were clearcut, with established rules and methods of playing. One of them picked the target, and they would conduct an analysis before deciding who received first strike. After a period of survey and careful attacks, one of them inevitably won the desired favor. Report back, trade, report a little more, and move on. Simple. What was there to debate about?

"It wasn't like what at all, Donovan? I don't quite... understand just what you're trying to say? Did you get her or not? If you did, then I'm looking forward to that trade-off..."

Donovan's gaze hardened further, and he crossed his arms. A small section of his mind tore at him for treating his brother in this manner, but none of that remorse reached his features. "We aren't going to trade off, Dominic. Never again. You can have the rest of the girls on the station, but Dante is mine. I...I love her." His own eyes widened with his brother's as he said the words. He hadn't intended to add that, his voice falling to bewildered uncertainty as he did, his arms falling to his sides as he looked down at the floor.

That was the last thing on Earth he expected to hear, and Dominic's eyes widened as he stared dumbstruck at his brother.

Everything was foreign to him, all of a sudden. No trade? They always traded. Mine? There was no possessiveness with them, never had been. It wasn't Dominic's or Donovan's. It was theirs, together, always together, one. His last statement was the most bewildering of all, and Dominic looked more closely at his brother, indigo eyes shading to midnight as he stared.

He loved her?!

Another completely and utterly unknown to him. Love wasn't for them. They were Creche, and it was simply not an option, not even a consideration that he would have ever thought to think of. Dominic thought briefly of another male Creche pair that had encountered this problem, one of the brother's forming an unnecessary attachment to a different female. The outcome had been enough to frighten him away from ever thinking of "love" again. They were Creche, and anything that could divide them ruined their usefulness. They could find themselves back in reconditioning, back on Earth, sold, or worse. He shuddered at that thought, watching his brother's resigned demeanor, and restrained a sudden urge to strike the man as he finally spoke.

"What the fuck do you mean "love?!" It's just a girl, Donovan, a female who doesn't even know who we are. It's not like we can't just go out and get another one. I don't see what makes her so goddamn special that you're going to jeopardize our lives for some little girl. She was just a bet."

Donovan's hands were wrapped into the front of his brother's uniform as he slammed him back into the wall before he quite knew what he'd done, midnight eyes glaring into his reflection with cold fury. "She is not a bet," he said clearly, ice heavy in his voice, "and she knows who I am. You stay away from her, we continue as we were. Review is in two weeks. Suck it up and strut it like we always do, and in six months we're out, and it won't matter anymore...but you can't take that six months away from me, Dominic. I won't let you, my brother."

His face remained stony, but inside his heart was sinking. He'd forgotten all about review. Every month the Creche sent up a specially trained psychiatrist to test them, to verify that they were adjusting properly, doing well in their studies...and maintaining their reversible versatility.

The point of going to the trouble and expense of creating twin sets like themselves and raising them entirely together wasn't to cultivate their separate personalities. The Creche wanted two individuals who could play each other flawlessly, should the need arise. A Creche pair who lost that ability was much reduced in value. If the interviewer picked up on that loss, at best, they would be sent to earth for reconditioning. At worst, the Creche would cut its losses entirely and sell them, singly or as a pair. There were hundreds of intermediate fates as well, all of them more or less unappetizing.

Donovan had broken the cardinal rule. He'd allowed himself to form another attachment, and he'd put both himself and his twin on dangerous ground.

But when he thought of Dante, her smile, her easy acceptance...he couldn't bring himself to regret what he'd done. He wouldn't even know where to begin.

Dominic had never seen this side of Donovan before. His twin had always been rather easy-going, charming and friendly, the one to pick and choose and throw away at will. He was supposed to the quiet and reserved, but fiery tempered one. This sudden change to angry possessiveness both frightened and enraged him, and he tightened his fingers into the collar of Donovan's uniform as he glared back, just as coldly, speaking just as icily.

"We wouldn't be having this dispute in the first place, if you'd managed to keep from getting pussy-whipped, my brother." He was crude, so twisted with fear at being sold and separated from Donovan that he found himself saying things he couldn't quite believe or understand. "How the fuck are we going to pass review?! It's not that goddamn easy now that I don't even understand you anymore. I don't know what that bitch did, Donovan, but you're brainwashed and we're going to be sent Earthside and fucking sold if we don't take care of this little problem you've created."

His brother's words suddenly dawned on him, and Dominic dropped his hand's from his twin's shirt, staring. "What do you mean... she knows who you are? You didn't..."

He released his hold on his brother as Dominic's hands fell away from him, and their indigo eyes spoke to each other with the same intense connection they had always shared...but now it was confused, strangled, and though each received the other's message, neither of them understood, and Donovan was forced to resort to clumsy words to answer his brother's disbelieving question.

"I...love her, bro," he said quietly at last, abandoning his cold demeanor and regarding his twin with pleading in his eyes.

"YOU TOLD HER?! You fucking told her we were Creche, didn't you? You're not supposed to do that, that's the goddamn first rule! What if she tells someone, what if someone finds out?! We're outcasts because of this fucking tattoo..." he flicked the back of his brother's neck, right on the mark. "And now you went and told some stranger girl because she slept with you?!"

The fear and sadness on Donovan's face made him clench his jaw, holding back tears of hurt and rage. A little of his anger faded as he recognized and felt the pleading in his brother's eyes, but only a little, stubborn disbelief clinging to him despite his best efforts to try and understand this sudden turn of events. His own eyes muted, sadness at their seeming separation, and Dominic rubbed his face tiredly, sighing as Donovan spoke again, the same words. "I love her."

"But, you're my... brother." He knew it was a paltry excuse, and a surge of rage at himself erupted. Now he sounded like he was begging, pleading for something he didn't even own or fully comprehend. Dante had managed to draw a line between the pair, and for the first time in his entire life, Dominic was separate from Donovan.

He shook his head, trying to clear his thoughts, but ended up angry as he turned to punch the wall, desperate for anything to distract him from his pain. "We're fucking Creche! I don't want to be separated and sold and never see my own goddamn brother again! I wish we'd never seen that redheaded bitch, ever! She's not Madeleine, she's not Melinda, she's not even Roxy! I just don't see what's so different, and that's what's going to get us iced!"

"I told her before, not after," said Donovan, a little of his chill returning before their plight hit him again and he softened, sat down on the bunk he'd so recently shared with Dante and looked up into his brother's angry, frightened features. "Dom...she didn't care," he said softly. "I told her, and she didn't care. She...trusted me anyway." The words were coming harder to him, but he had to make his brother understand. Dominic was right. If he could explain this, if he could make Dom see truth, then they would match, and it would be just like it was before.

Looking up into his brother's face, Donovan had a sick certainty that wasn't going to happen.
