Mat reached the quad barracks. It was about time, that trip in was awful and he needed rest. But that can wait... was his thought as he looked up from unpacking and saw one of his new roommates. The guy was huge and looked none too happy about Mat being there.

Try to be friendly, that was his first thought. "Hiya, the name is Matrim Cauthon, but everyone just calls me Mat, and you are...?" The guy just blew right by him into the room. Well this is a good beginning. "Excuse me but I've got to go." was all Mat said as he walked out the door.

All Mat could do was mumble a few selected curses that his mother definitely wouldn't have approved of as he stormed out of the room.

John brushed past the guy in the barracks, he needed inside a room, any room. And his own barracks was all the nicer because it meant that no one would ask questions about why he was here.

He heard the door close as the guy who was in here before him stormed out. "Great, just great. A guy tries to be friendly and you blow him off and back him mad, as if anything else would look more suspicious." Luckily, he thought, the kid is a totally green doesn't know his head from his ass in this place.

'But if that had been a vetern, you would have been in trouble, why did you do that anyway?' another voice in his head asked. I just didn't know what to do, he thought.

'No, not brushing the kid off. That other thing.' the voice answered back. I don't know, was all he could think and he put his head between his legs and sobbed.

Most people would think it strange that a teenage boy should hear voices in his head, let alone answer them, but to John Little it was his way of disconnecting himself from the events that had just happened. For a gypsy, to commit an act of violence was unthinkable and once he came to the realization of what he did, he ran back to the barracks and tryed to figure out why he had done this.

And so it came to pass that John Little, who was nicknamed Little John after the Robin Hood character for both his size and his name, sat on his bunk quietly sobbing because he lost his control like no gypsy should do. Especially a gypsy prince.

Mat made it back to the barracks, only to find 'Goliath' asleep. He pulled out is desk and started to search.

As with everyone, he had heard of the attack on Wick, despite the fact that the dice had stopped when she bumped into him in the hallway he didn't think that she was his problem, only its signal.

He still remembered his mother calling him, "her little nephilim" as he left for command school from break, and he was curious what a nephilim was. He put on some ICP, a vintage disc that he had received as a present, old school music from the 1990's and proceeded to watch the search.

A small beeping woke Mat. Shit, he must have dozed off. But he had found it. It was from the Bible, something about when the 'sons of god' saw that the 'daughters of men' were fair and lay with them. Thus creating the nephilim, a race of giants and according to this account one of the reasons God sent the great flood. The nephilim were giants among men, and as most believed, the progeny of angels and humans. Possessing the best of both parents, the heart of an angel yet the soul of a human.

He knew it couldn't be true, not in a literal sense. But what was the significance?

John woke up to find the bunk above him occupied. He got up quickly and moved away so that he could see the boy better. It was that Mat person from earlier, it seemed that he had fallen asleep working on his desk.

While John was curious about what the boy was looking for, his courtesy caused him to leave the room before it got the better of him.

Walking out of the room, his father's words echoed in his head. We are gypies, and while we may steal, we never harm another phyically or invade their soiltary nature for that is sacred to us.

For the second time in as many hours, Mat had dozed off without realizing it. He really must be tired. I should really get some sleep... was his first thought. Maybe it will all be clearer in the morning... was his second. And so he prepared for bed.

The dreams came again as they always do, it was a nightly ritual and it scared Mat that he could find such comfort in it just because it was a regular occurance in his life, as so many other things that had happened before them.

The nightmares were harmless, and sometimes helpful; for they gave him warnings of things to come. But the dreams were another matter, and that was always the problem, the dreams. They were so real and he often wondered if he had died in one of those dreams, that might he never wake up. But all those concerns were behind him as he was asleep before his hean had hit the pillow and he was dreaming soon after that.
