After being late to the meeting, Arcen had ordered Geneva into his quarters.

Geneva walked briskly into his office and stood at attention. She knew better then to say anything at all. Military bearing was in order and she was ready for the requisite ass-chewing she was about to receive.

Again she silently cursed herself for her stupidity.

Arcen followed Geneva in and let the door slide shut behind him as he walked slowly over to the chair next to his walldesk and sat down.

She was at attention, and wasn't meeting his eyes, and he stared at her in frustration. "Did you receive the notification I sent you, Brooke?" he asked - calmly, he thought. "Did you know when the meeting concerning Parade Review was supposed to take place? You're new. Maybe I left you off my list. Did I leave you off my list, Brooke? Is that why you were late? Or do you just not give a shit?"

paused before answering him with impeccable military bearing. “ I received the message just a few minutes before, sir. I have no excuse and I accept responsibility for my inconsideration to you and the other members of our team. I apologize and pledge it will not happen again, SIR!”

She rattled this off with sincerity and yet it could not help to seem a bit rehearsed. Way to go, asshole! Nice impression on the new commander. Her exterior was the perfect vision of steel and the consummate soldier. Her insides were quivering and she felt a drop of sweat roll down the small of her back.

Arcen eyed her coldly. "I am aware," he said quietly, "that you have no excuse."

He regarded her as she stood so firmly at attention and tried to decide what to do. He could make a big deal out of punishing her, or he could just send her on her way. The first would probably make him look like a jerk; she hadn't been that late, and she was new to the Quad, and while that was really no excuse, it would be an even greater waste of time to have her on punishment detail when she needed to get her kit and uniform ready for parade review tomorrow.

On the other hand, if he just let her go without any punishment at all, his troops might respect him less. He hated to bring the factor into it, but she was attractive. They might think he was playing favorites, and that was not a quicksand he wanted to fall into.

He needed an intermediate solution, and didn't have one right now. It would have to wait.

"Clean your kit and get your uniform ready for parade review tomorrow morning. I'll decide what to do with you after that," he said, his voice tired and tinged with a hint of disgust for the situation. He should have worded his message more firmly...but no one else was late. Just her. She had such a good record. Maybe this was really an one-time occurence.

He seriously hoped so.

"That's all."

She recognized that she was being dismissed and saluted sharply. She left the room quickly before anything else could go wrong.
Damn! She now had to wait to see what Arcen came up with in the way of punishment. Again, this left her with a feeling of lacking control. She hated this feeling. She would rather just here what was to be dished out and get on with it.

She headed back to her cell to get her kit in order. She felt the need to have control over something. She had a bad taste in her mouth. She had let that asshole Sasha distract her long enough to get herself into trouble. When would she learn? It would feel good to have a task to do and she was strangely looking forward to a little time to get ready for parade review. This was something in which she could shine.
