Now that we're set, please direct your OOC ramblings re: book one to here.

I've posted an entry for Year One and I'm about to make one for Year Two. I don't want to divide things by location, as that leads to unhappy postmapping; if we're going to do postmapping we might as well have the posts in rough chronological order to begin with; we can still subdivide into areas or events beneath it.

If this doesn't please you, now is the time to make suggestions!

If we're voting, I definitely vote for chronology. Times one million.

Also, since I have a new character, she is available for any sort of plot gaps (if any!) we need to bridge. And the drama, of course. But I'll have a hard time getting her into Year Two without going through building her up in Year One, unless we have a definite direction for her to go in.

Year one is only for people who come up in Kat's launch. If you'd like perhaps you two can have some interaction, but it's really up to you. I was thinking of 'rolling' a new character to play around with Kat and Jax in that first year. Alternatively, we can put Mercedes into Year Two with Sol and/or Nathan, since Gabe's not going to be around this time. Remember that the clusters don't really spend much time with each other; it's the years that get paired up, so ...yeah.

Anyway, putting things into year format means we can always go back and 'fill in' gaps and still jump ahead and play round in the future. Fun things!

Teams. Within Cluster A, Launch One and Two are paired up, etc.

I wasn't planning on posting too much Kat/Jax in thei first year cause their significant storyline doesn't begin until they're combined with Sol's cluster. I don't mind a few posts if y'all want to introduce a new char or two, but don't expext too much

I'm not worried about volume. I just want us to have Year One on our radars to play with me if we need to. I suppose I should probably rename our Years so they match up with Adam's Note section... >.> Or I can just make a new post that says Kat's Year. Yes, that sounds more likely.

I moved Adam's old note section over here. You can safely ignore anything that has to do with Gabe for right now because Gabe has opted out of this section so far. I just wanted everyone to see the other notes he put in without me having to describe them vaguely and use links.

Besides, I like visual aids and reference material!

Nathan came into the program a year older than most students, so he's Kat's age even though he came through in the year after hers. I wanted it so they would have almost no (if any) interaction at all prior to Charybdis, so I'm thinking I may send him to the installation in the Andes. If that's the case, then I may take a few of my other relatively non-essential personnel over there (see: Alice, Pallas, etc.) and play around while you guys are getting things together.

Please feel free to jump in, and know that I'm waiting with bated breath for you guys to join in.

<3! Here goes.

If Nathan's in a different location, tho, how is he going to interact with Wick and thus get iced? I think it'd be safe to say he probably won't have ny contact with Kat since he'll start a year after in a different cluster, and she's going to be out after a few years anyway.

Would you be free to phone-plan this tonight? I'm essentially husbandless all week due to an op so I'll actually have time to pay attention.

If it's not too late, sure. I have to fly to Tennessee tomorrow so I can't stay up TOO late. Not like I'll be piloting the plane or anything. AT least from here to Nashville is a direct flight.

Nathan wouldn't be the only person I'd have to move, of course. I haven't yet posted the different school rosters, but we can chat about that this evening, if you like. I was thinking of shifting a few people over to the Andes location, including Wick, Jor, Nathan, Dante, Swede, etc. I want whole school's worth of people to play with for each group without any interference.

In the original rewrite for Book One Kat and Jax got iced toward the end of the second year for attacking Sol and Gabe. We can certainly change that if you like, but if not, then it would be safe for me to have Nathan transferred from Andes to Siberia later on without having to shift everyone else around and still keep him out of Kat's hair. For now.

I have no problem rewriting all of that if it has lost its appeal. I was just trying to accommodate the few details that I remembered. It *would* be nice to have two separate groupings in which to draw all the tangled little lines of friendship and association that we can tie into new and interesting knots later on when everyone's together.

I like the idea of the two main character groups attending different schools. That gives us more flexibility to play with them since they'll be in different settings, and it's not like we wanted them to have a lot of interaction prior to Stage 2.

Let's stick with the rewrite plan for Book One and have K/J out by the end of year two or three. Don't move Nathan over; that would just interrupt the plot line with Wick/Jor/Dante/etc over at the other school. We'll get my bad little kidlings out and that will give Sol/Gabe a few years to develop independently before we toss them all together in the next stage.

Sooooo... maybe Mercedes can fill the Gabe gap. Not in quite the same way, of course. I already wrote her to Siberia, so that works. And it will give me a place to develop her with your (plural) guidance, since I'm still pretty hesitant about playing in your world.

In the meantime... how do IDs work in game? Do they carry ID cards, or have RFID bracelets or something else? Also, are we still using the e-desk concept? There are some little solo stories I want to use to frame part of Mercedes' psyche and I don't want to make technical blunders.

..hm.

I hadn't given the idea of ID a lot of thought, but it certainly deserves some. It seems to me that a bracelet would be too inexact. Perhaps they can embed a chip or something? That's removable but not easily and wouldn't interfere with any kind of suit or exercise.

The e-desk, yes, but they're all dumb terminals with no private storage and they're going to be called terminals, not desks. It's something easily understood that gets the point across without being too flashy.

Can the IDs monitor body functions like heart rate, etc? I'm not sure where they should be embedded to be effective, but it could be a nice plot device. And maybe some of the functions are removed for privacy when they get to the Stage 2 facility, since they're much older, etc...

Ok so PERHAPS... it can be a chip at the base of the skull that is permenant and allows things like biofunction monitoring as well as serving basic ID purposes. It will be protected (inside the skull) and as an evil added bonus, since it's near the spinal cord, for the younger years, it can be enabled to block nerve impulses - basically letting someone with the controller paralyze the children. For their own good, of course, and only in emergency situations. And then as the kids get older, those parts of the chip can be permenantly burned out to avoid the potential for exploitation as they become operatives etc.

It would be a great way for a small number of adults to handle a large number of children if they needed.

Also it would be lovely for my backplotish thingy. Otherwise I may have them use tranq darts, which is fine but seems somewhat oldschool. This is the NEW school, babay!

Updated:

Plus, we have kind of a lot of people who go rogue, so that could provide some delightful complications for them. Or do you think they would not be so very delightful? There could be a little circuit that, if it detects conditions that indicate danger (including chip removal which should be technically difficult and have some element of danger, possibly brain damage etc), it could broadcast a signal. The signal wouldn't have much strength in certain situations, so that would assist our rogues a bit.

Also, I'm not stealing this from somewhere, am I? I mean, there are lots of brain chip ideas... Hm.

My only concern with the brain chip idea is that they DID imbed a chip into Ender and his siblings to monitor them.

I am not keen on any sort of chip that involves monitoring. ID is one thing, but we get into a whole other plot if kids are controlled and I think we have enough going on as is. Just my opinion.

Ah, then that is not a good option here, then. Fair enough!

On another technological front, do we have any sort of anti-grav?

I think I'd like to keep the anti-grav thing grounded in reality for us, so any anti-grav training will probably be done in water. I don't know how much of that will be in the Stage 1 setting since Stage 2 is actually the underwater habitat thingy; they may give them a taste, but they won't want to waste much in the way of time and resources on that subject until the students have graduated and been confirmed for Stage 2.

... er...wow. That is a seriously harsh four week period. I can't believe the doctor showed a little girl video of her father's body being pulled out of the water and then drugged her when she freaked out. Not that we don't have plenty of vindictive faculty here and there in the checkered IFC past, but I think we may have a new winner. On the other hand, at least the Chinese have loosened up on freedom of the press, showing that sort of thing on public television. Poor Mercedes.

Speaking of IFC, the IF in our story is no longer the IF, and its charter has been altered slightly. China is largest remaining superpower and it is taking charge of the deteriorating state of Earth's ability to support life by organizing a massive colonization effort. Our kids are the best of the brightest and they are being trained as the officers that man all important PLA postings, including the colony ships.

Thanks be to Pammy for taking the plunge and putting something down on paper. I shall do my best to follow suit tomorrow when I've had some sleep. <3

Hm, if it is too harsh I can tone it down, certainly. I did want Mercedes to have a rather tough time of it to start, including the denial and realization. If the staff's behavior is out of keeping with what the no-longer-called-IF organization would support or condone, I will change it. I am not partial to what I write!

Lies! We're all partial to what we write.

The only place the current world exists so far is in our heads, so I think it's rather difficult to make a misstep at this point. I haven't been able to come up with a satisfactory replacement title for our IF, so...Amy? You're the Naming Mistress. Get to it! These are the military elite! They're the ones who'll be piloting the sleeper ships full of colonists and in charge of setting up the colonies when they get there and declaring when the colony is capable of living without martial law; until then, they get to rule the colonies with an iron fist. Yay! Those who don't go on the colony ships will be qualified to serve in any branch of the military, etc, though I'd say the vast majority are probably going to be sent out...if that's ok with you guys.

Regarding the faculty; no matter what our setup, I'm sure we'll have room for participants who are mentally off-kilter. ANY profession that involves adults responsible for children they don't individually love is going to involve at least a few who meet that off-kilter criterion. When you don't love them, children tend to be viewed as either a troublesome resource or a burden after you have to deal with them for a while; I imagine a particularly unbalanced person might easily become more so and begin to take joy in victories over them, no matter how small or petty.

Relax, guys. Write what you want and we'll make it work. We don't need to make any actual decisions about what is status quo and what is crazy-out there until we actually have our characters interact.

Hmmmm.

I had hoped that Amy might post something before I had to so that we had a nice benchmark to set the scene. However, perhaps I could create a faculty member to oversee some of our little ones and thereby have a vehicle for the staff side of things without having to lard Sol down with a bunch of unnecessary exposition.

What do you think? Is it alright if I dive in here with a faculty member? I don't know if you remember Cam, Amy...but that's what I was thinking of.

I had planned on her being defensive of her father's memory but rather rapidly able (over the course of a month or two) to emotionally adopt the IFC concept as her family. Then after a year or two of being sort of a zealot for the IFC, something happens to break her faith. By then she will have made friends and enemies and it will go from there.

I am sorry that I am such a nonexistent poster. Is it okay if I skip the Year One intro for now, and just try to post something in Year Two when K/J's group merges with Sol's? I feel like I could come up with more there, since I'd have interaction with someone else (and I am familiar with how I want them to be with Sol) and later once I have a feel again for my kids, I can go back and do an intro post.
