Even reading her injury report hadn't prepared him for the full blow of her injuries, and with wide eyes Jor sat back in his chair, frozen for a moment with complete and utter shock. The doctor's words were still registering, slowly filing through his mind as he calculated and processed and tried to reason away all the information. Jor couldn't possibly imagine what Wick was feeling... he knew what she'd gone through after the bombing, but now... this? All he knew was that she'd survive, she'd been fine regardless of whatever medical bullshit this man was spitting out at him, and with renewed fire in his eyes he spoke.

"She's alive. She's survived before and she'll do it again, that's what matters. It won't hold her back, you'll see..." Jor glanced toward Wick, grinning angrily. "Nathan fucked with the wrong girl, Wick will be back and strong again in no time, and he's gonna ice for what he did to her. Get her better for me, doc, and you can't chase me out of this place cause I'm gonna stay here the whole damn time until she can walk out that door with me."

"I'm afraid not, Jor. You can visit her once a day, half an hour. You don't want her getting sick and complicating her condition, do you?" The doctor was now wholly convinced that it hadn't been Jor. The bereft look on the boy's face as he'd enumerated her injuries had been enough to sway him.

"For now I'd suggest you go to your barracks and lie down. Classes are over for today. And stay away from the Detention Center and Nathan."

Jor couldn't contain his angry disbelief as he stared at the doctor. Of course he wanted Wick to get better, wanted to see her walking and smirking at him again with that fire in her eyes. But half an hour every day? He didn't know what to say as he turned to look at Wick, watched her sleep with bruises ringing her closed eyes, all the tubes and needles and lines stuck into her. He'd promised he'd stay with her, had promised. He just didn't know what to do.

"A half... a half hour? I'll wear whatever I have to, give me a mask or something but I promised her I'd stay with her, she's my girlfriend, of course I don't want her to get sick but I swore I'd stay with her! Please, just let me stay!"

Back on his turf, the doctor gave a little, but not much.

"Alright. Two visits, before and after classes, one hour each. But you can't miss your classes or your simulator practice for a visit. She'll be taken care of, don't worry. Now go back to your barracks and calm down. She'll won't be awake until tomorrow morning anyway."

The beep of his desk terminal called him away, and Jor turned to look at Wick as he approached and read the missive concerning Nathan's release.

He looked back at Jor. There was no way, in his professional opinion, that the boy could have done this. Someone had provided Nathan with an alibi, though. Where did that leave Jor?

It was against regulation, but he couldn't let the boy leave without telling him. "Jor," he said tightly, and motioned him over to his desk.

Slightly mollified by his victory, Jor glanced longingly at Wick, about to leave her for the night when the doctor called him over to his desk, voice tight and hard. Furrowing his eyebrows in confusion, he nodded politely, giving one last look toward Wick as he made his way over to stand by the man. "Yes, sir?"

The doctor pulled up the file concerning Nathan's release, displayed it on the screen and stepped back, roughly gesturing for Jor to read it.

"Stay away from him, Jor. I have to find out what's going on. You're sure it was Nathan?"

He read the report with growing disbelief and anger, serpentine eyes now flaming with rage as he hissed between his teeth, looking up at the doctor with hatred burning. There was nothing on Earth that would keep him away from Nathan, not after what he'd done to Wick. Nothing the doctor said was convincing him otherwise, and with a flare of protectiveness surging through him, he managed a curt nod at the man.

"It was him. I'll be here in the morning to see her, if he fucking comes near her again, I swear... don't let him anywhere near here, or I will fucking kill him, I don't care what anyone says, he lays one finger on her and..." Jor shot on last glance at Wick. She'd done everything she could to protect him, had sacrified her life to keep him safe. He loved her. It was only fair he do the same.

without another word Jor turned and stalked swiftly from the infirmary, his fists clenched as he imagined all the wonderfully painful things he was going to do to Nathan in payment for almost killing his spark.

The doctor watched Jor go with deep misgivings before he called in the duty nurse on call to watch over Wick. "Get a pair of MPs on the door. No one sees this patient unless I approve it directly." He took a copy of his report and his personal terminal from his desk while the nurse blinked at him in surprise.

"Is...is everything alright, sir? Where are you going?"

"To speak to the Major."

He left the infirmary and a quick walk, pleased to see the MPs already hurrying down the hall. Rachel was an excellent assistant, and he knew Wick would be safe until he could figure out what the hell was going on.

Mode's mood was ruined when he saw the MPs outside the infirmary.

He approached slowly, casually, but they stopped him anyway. "No one gets in. Doctor's orders." Mode put on his most earnest, worried expression. "But what about my friend? Is she really badly hurt?" The MPs just watched him stonily, and finally the second spoke. "No one. Come back later and the doctor can speak to you."

The door to the infirmary opened then, and a military nurse in her early thirties appeared in the doorway, clipboard in hand. When she looked up and saw him she froze, and he read the quick flicker of fear in her eyes with a little surprise.

"Nurse? These guards won't let me in to see my friend. Do you think you could talk to them, please?"

Rachel stared. She'd read Callenstrom's file, Windhaven's file, and eventually located and read Terrence's file as well. It had taken some digging - Charybdis was tight with its records - but from what she'd read the boy was certainly physically capable of inflicting the injuries the girl had suffered. Mentally...who knew? Charybdis retreads were always iffy business, as far as she was concerned.

She'd just come from a little chat with Wick, and had some disturbing news for the doctor - but no matter what the girl said about being mistaken, there was no way she was letting this cold-eyed boy into her infirmary.

"Absolutely not," she said icily, and then turned to the guards. "No one. Not a soul but me or the doctor, is that clear?" They nodded stiffly, and she turned away and walked down the hall, charts in hand.

Mode glared at her back, and then shrugged at the guards with a "What can you do?" expression before moving away, features darkening. He was beginning to feel the first warning twinges of anger flickering at the edges of his awareness. It was time to duck out of site for a while until he got back under control.

It was time to go see Kat.

He came in, ignoring the salute the guards threw him, and walked in to his infimary, intent on speaking to Wick.

Her bed was empty.

He stared. The girl had a broken ankle that had only had the regen unit on it for three hours. It would be another two days before she could possibly walk on it. Where could she have gone? He walked around her bed and found her next to it, on the floor. Had she fallen? If they had seemed clouded before, her eyes were crystal clear now. Her ankle appeared to be intact. At least she hadn't tried to walk on it. She was still incredibly pale, but whether this was from blood loss or her natural condition or a combination of both, he couldn't tell.

The girl was pulling at the gel packets that covered her left arm. The gel had solidified against her burned flesh and become opaque. She had made little progress, and he imagined any that she had made had come painfully at best. "Don't pull at those," he said gently, and picked her back up, put her in the bed. She allowed this, staring at him intently.

"You're the doctor?" Her voice was clear, unmuddled by any remaining drug effects. "That's right," he responded as he began reattaching her IVs. She didn't wince as he put them back in, just watched him work until he was through. "What's wrong with my arm?" she asked finally, bluntly. The doctor took a breath.

"Your arm has been very badly burned with an accelerant-" "I know that! I know it was Petrol 5, I know I was burned," she snapped viciously. "What I want to know is the level of damage. Third or fourth? I don't recognize these things." She indicated the gel paks. The girl was beginning to shake, but leaned away slightly when he reached out to touch her uninjured shoulder.

Gerard blinked. No, definitely not dazed.

"Fourth," he said finally. The girl wanted brutal facts, and he could provide them. "Those gel paks are relatively new. They were put on the market last year. They allow us to stabilize burn patients long enough for the skin grafts to be grown and prevent infection. If you know the particulars of Petrol 5, you know it burns very quickly. Your muscle tissue was largely undisturbed, but most of the skin was lost. We're nearly ready for the skin graft, but I'm afraid you will not regain the dermal feeling in the skin tissue. The nerves were too badly damaged. Your arm will remain functional, of course - the muscle nerves are intact - but you won't feel anything on the skin."

The girl blinked at him blankly, and he felt a little guilty for being so blunt...but she seemed to have some knowledge of burn medicine. Maybe it stemmed from the previous burn Jor had mentioned.

"I'm sorry," he said finally. "But I have some very important questions to ask you. Who did this to you?"

Wick was silent.

No feeling in her arm, ever again. Feeling in her hand, but not in her arm. When she'd woken up this time, she'd felt lucid, lucid enough to tell the nurse she'd been wrong about Mode, that she hadn't been thinking clearly. After the nurse left, she'd quietly conducted self-diagnostics. He hadn't done anything to her after the fire, she was fairly certain. Virgin arsons were often frightened of their work, or so she'd heard. Not that she'd ever understood it.

He'd been effective, considering his inexperience - very effective. Localized, non-lethal, non-crippling, incredibly painful with long-lasting effect. Very effective.

She marveled at her lack of internal shock...but only at first. She'd remained conscious long enough to see her skin turning black. Inside, she'd known what the doctor was going to tell her. Moving her arm had been unsuccessful, except for a very small bit, and the strange crinkling sound had made her immediately desist. No pain. It was the lack of pain that gave it away.

"I didn't see them, whoever it was. They knocked me out from behind." She said this in a reasonably believable voice, and then said nothing more, meeting the doctor's brown eyes resolutely.

The doctor narrowed his eyes the slightest bit.

"That's not what you told me earlier. Do you remember any of that? I asked you the same question that I just asked you now, and you told me it was 'Mode.'" He watched her expression carefully, but it didn't alter. Her eyes flinched a bit, though. "Your friend who brought you in helped me to identify him, and they arrested him...but he was alibied, and he has been released. And now you're telling me that he was not the one who did this to you?"

The girl remained silent.

"Alright. That doesn't leave too many possibilities. Was it Jor?"

Her eyes narrowed in disbelieving fright. "NO, it wasn't Jor, you sick bastard!" she practically screamed at him, and then started shivering again. "He would NEVER, NEVER do anything like this, EVER." He ignored the girl's disrespect to a superior officer and just stared at her, then at the bruises on her neck. He knew Jor hadn't done it, but if her fear for him would get her to tell him who the real attacker was, he would be satisfied with that.

She blushed an incredibly delicate pink and pulled the gown more tightly around herself as he picked up the hard copy of her report and handed it to her. Her face remained stonily impassive until the last line made her eyes widen. "Oh, that wasn't...whoever attacked me didn't do anything like that, sir," she said at last, a little lamely.

He sat down, made himself comfortable. "I see. I thought you were unconscious?"

Wick swallowed. Trapped.

"I would know, sir," she said stonily, but he looked unimpressed. Damn, why had he brought Jor into this? How did he know about Jor, anyway?

"You would know, eh?" the doctor continued inexorably. "I performed a routine pelvic exam as part of my investigation, and took all the standard cultures. If I run that through my DNA identifier, who is that going to implicate?"

Wick stared. Did this doctor really think Jor had done it? She thought of his eyes, the way they lit when she kissed him, how tightly he held her when they embraced. Her match would never do anything to hurt her. Not like this. How could anyone else think he would?

A sudden vision of Jor's face dark with rage when he saw Nicolai kiss her fluttered before her eyes. Wick looked at the doctor more carefully. "Who exactly brought me in?"

"A boy from Phoenix by the name of Nicolai Mishkin. Do you know him?"

Nicolai! Nicolai had found her? No wonder the doctor thought was Jor. Nicolai must have told them what happened in the hallway. Wick started to feel sick to her stomach. "Not very well," she said in a low voice. "He's been hanging around me since I got here two days ago. He tried to kiss me just before...before." She looked up at the doctor, a rare expression of pleading in her eyes. "Jor saw, and he was mad...but I swear to you, it wasn't Jor! Give me a test! It wasn't Jor!"

A few hours of jogging angrily through the corridors of the school had cleared his mind, giving him what he hoped was a sufficient plan for revenge. Kat's dismissal had been for the better; Jor knew he wouldn't have been able to physically beat Nathan, not this time, not anymore. But he would be able to win now... and he had to see Wick. Making his way toward the infirmary, he tried to wheedle his way in, asking for whoever was in charge to allow him in.

Jor was not pleased when the MPs guarding the infirmary door refused to call the doctor.

"Just go see if he's there, please! My girlfriend is in the one who got hurt, I just want to see her, and he said that I could stop by! Look, I know he's back, can you just ask?"

They ignored him with studied disinterest, and he began to get angry, pacing back and forth until they started to give him menacing glances. After a few minutes, his face darkened with rage, and he raised his voice irrationally against the two armed MP's.

"Fucking let me in, that's my fucking girlfriend in there! WICK! I know the doc can hear me inside, get out of my way you bastards, let me in! Wick! WICK!"

Blinking in surprise, Wick turned towards the door.

Jor...Jor was outside, he'd come to see her. Was he still angry? Her heart ran cold for a moment...but he didn't sound angry. "Let him in," she said to the doctor icily. When he didn't move, still watching her, she grew more forceful. "He didn't do it, and you know it! Let him in!" The doctor remained silent, and she turned towards the door, a frantic note creeping into her tone. "LET HIM IN!"

She wasn't sure if it was her tone or Jor's protests, but suddenly the MP that blocked the doorway was gone.

He could hear her screaming inside, and shouted back, until surprisingly, the MP blocking him moved from his path. Throwing himself through the doorway, Jor rushed inside, ignoring the doctor that sat at her bedside, seeing only Wick sitting up in bed, calling frantically. Completely oblivious to her IV lines, he jumped nimbly up onto the cot, kneeling on either side of her legs as he wrapped his arms around her chest and buried his face into her neck.

The doctor moved then, frowning, his tone cold. "Young man, I thought I warned you that..." Jor turned to glare at him, face dark, and hissed. "Go away..."

She relished the feel of his arms around her, the press of his lips against her neck. She heard far away voices, but didn't pay them any attention. She had been almost certain she would never feel this again, and she was too busy feeling and scenting his presence to question why he'd forgiven her, why he wanted to talk to her after what she'd done.

But as he held her, shaking slightly, she opened her eyes at last. It couldn't last forever, and she needed to know. "Jor..." she managed after a moment, "what are you doing here?" Her tone was one of joyful amazement. She registered that the doctor was no longer by her side, but she didn't care.

He smiled wickedly and answered tauntingly, "Well, what do you think I'm doing here? Seeing you..." but his voice faded as he noticed her amazed confusion. Furrowing his brows slightly, he kissed her gently, careful not to touch her bruises or her arm. "I... I heard what happened and came to see you earlier, but you were all drugged up and everything. You okay?"

Jor sat back then, intertwined his fingers with hers, watching her face carefully, his green eyes shadowed forest. "I saw Mode; Wick, they let him out, that little red-head alibied him, didn't you tell the doctor what happened? He..." His jaw clenched angrily, but he managed to continue. "He was mocking me about what he did to you... we have to get him locked up again, he'll hurt you, Wick, listen to me please..."

The doctor emerged from his lab, carrying a sheet of paper, but Jor paid no heed, just staring at Wick until the man reached the bedside. Flicking his gaze toward him with irritation, Jor squeezed Wick's fingers. "What is it now?"

Wick watched the doctor approach, his expression frightening her a little with its blank chill, as if he'd shut down his emotion entirely to deal with them. She tightened the fingers of her right hand on Jor's arm briefly, willing him to silence. The doctor couldn't be allowed to think that it was Nathan who had done this.

"I have the test results from the cultures we were discussing," he said, his eyes hard on hers. She couldn't help wincing a little, and her fingers gripped Jor's arm a little harder, but she remained as stony as she could.

"You sure there's nothing you want to tell me before I take this to the Major? Either of you?" Wick watched Jor for a moment with pained eyes, and then looked back to the doctor. "It wasn't Jor. Sir." Her voice was clear and calm.

"How would you know?" the doctor asked her angrily. "You were unconscious, or so you said." He turned to Jor. "What do you have to say for yourself? Can you provide an alibi of where you were when the attack occurred?"

Jor pulled his arm away from Wick to stare defiantly at the doctor. "What are you talking about, an alibi? I already talked to you and told you everything, what's going on? Spark, what's he talking about?" He turned to face her, eyes widening at the pained expression in hers. The doctor remained silent, and turning back to face him after an almost guilty glance at Wick, Jor answered reluctantly.

"I was with Bianca... uh, Commander Westermin. My commander for Wolf. Now what the hell are these cultures? What didn't I do? I thought you already talked to that Major person about Nathan doing this, what the fuck is going on?"

She let her fingers fall from his arm. It was an effort to keep them there anyway.

...Bianca? He'd been with Bianca? A little of her old fire began to flicker in her eyes, but she kept her face blank, and it died soon. She didn't really care. She'd forced him away. What had she expected him to do, pine until she came to fetch him again?

Still, it stung.

"Wick has retracted her testimony. She now denies that she knew the identity of her attacker, and that she must have been mistaken when she identified Terrence before." The doctor's voice was cold and unforgiving. "As a result, that leaves only the DNA test results I've pulled for the suspected sexual assault for me to take to the Major."

She looked away, down at the ring on her hand. She had to save Jor, even if it meant he didn't understand.

He stared blankly at the doctor before glancing toward Wick, growing disbelief on his features as he moved toward the foot of the cot, as far away from her as possible. She wasn't even looking at him, staring at her hands, and Jor felt his insides clench in complete confusion and anger.

She couldn't have...

"Not Nathan?! Wick, are you crazy, it was him! I went to confront him, that kid from your quad was there, the big one, Nathan admitted it to us both!" Jor continued, voice roughening with a tinge of fear. She couldn't have said he'd done it, she knew he didn't, he could never hurt her. And sexual assault?

"What DNA test results? You tested her, did Nathan..." he caught himself. "I told you everything already, doc, what are you talking about sexual assault, I thought I already... Spark. Wick, look at me." Jor tilted his head, trying to look into her eyes, but she continued to avoid his gaze. "Spark, what's going on? I... I didn't do anything to you, I don't know what he's talking about, tell me!"

Meeting his eyes with her own at last, Wick looked at him with all the love she could hold in her eyes.

"I know you didn't do it, Jor. You'd never do anything like that. I told him that already," she said, nodding viciously at the doctor, "but he doesn't believe me. Jor, I didn't see who it was. They must have hit me from behind." Her story was less convincing this time. It was so hard to lie, looking into those green eyes, starting to fill with betrayal.

His skin paled as all the blood drained from his face, and it took a long moment, just staring, uncomprehending, before betrayal began to burn in his eyes. First she'd pushed him away, kissed Nicolai, and even when she'd gotten hurt he'd rushed to see her. And now... now this...

"You know he did it, Wick. I know he did it, he admitted it to me... and I don't know what you think you're doing." He hissed angrily, serpentine eyes narrowing dangerously. "Maybe it was your other boyfriend, that Nicolai..." Jor slid from the cot, now ignoring Wick as he glared defiantly at the doctor. "You told me that you believed me, that you knew I didn't do it..."

He began to back away, inching toward the door as he stared at Wick again, bitter anger in his tone. "Get better, Moira." Jor turned then to leave, stalking slowly away, his eyes downcast as he restrained his tears. Betrayed, again...

Still unable to move from her bed, Wick warred with herself as she watched him turn away. If she called him back, what then? What could she possibly say?

Suddenly she didn't care anymore, and her temper flared. "Damn you, Jordan, come back here! You know me better than that, match! Have I ever wanted to spend time with someone other than you? What the fuck would I want with some idiot flyboy? And when I tell you that I don't know who did this, it's the TRUTH, you selfish merdana, and if that's not enough for you, then you can get out!"

She was shaking with rage and fear. She didn't want him to leave, but she was tired of begging.

Jor stopped in his retreat, straightening his shoulders in a tight gesture of barely-controlled anger as he remained facing away, listening to Wick's tirade. Damn her, damn her, she always knew exactly what would raise his rage, exactly what broke his calm. Couldn't she see how much this was tearing him apart, how much her words hurt? She hadn't incited him this much since the first time he'd beaten her, and Jor felt the familiar flame burn hotly inside him. Match was right. And his match had just been lit.

He whirled around as she finished screaming, green eyes absolutely blazing with fury as his face darkened, eyes narrowing as he began to shout. His voice was frozen with cold fire, husky as he spoke, and he advanced a few steps toward her, fists clenched at his sides. "Why should I stay?! Every time I try to prove to you how much I love you, I just get shoved away! I was trying to protect you from him, Spark, I would have died before I let him hurt you! But you shoved me away, and I couldn't do anything, and now look what happened; someone," he said the word snidely, "fucking lit you on fire, broke your arm, and now I'm getting blamed for sexual assault?! If that's all it meant to you, Moira, then I don't see why you even care if I stay or not!"

Jor turned to face the doctor then, still raging, and snarled. "And what the hell do you want?! Is that my DNA you identified?! Do you possibly think that I would rape my own girlfriend?! I know Nathan is the one who attacked her, you know it too, if both of you are going to fucking lie, I might as well too! Fine! I'm the one who did it! I beat her until she couldn't say no and raped her and then lit her on fire with some Petrol 3 or whatever the fuck it's called! Is that what you want, Wick?! Protecting Nathan and not me?! Is this some sort of payback because you don't like me being around Bianca?! Fuck you, both of you, I am going to leave!"

Stalking over to Wick's bedside, Jor held out his hand impatiently. She just stared at him, her own fire burning in her eyes, but he leaned closer and hissed. "The ring, Wick. You don't seem to understand what it means. Or maybe I just fooled myself into thinking that it could mean something. Give it to me."

She looked at him for a long time.

From his viewpoint, everything he said was correct. She'd pushed him away because she wanted him safe, but he had no way of knowing that. Now she was protecting Nathan to keep him safe, and he couldn't know that either. Not with the doctor here, so close, ready to take notes and condemn Jor to death.

But this time, if she let him leave...he would be gone. Truly gone, no retrieval operations, no recovery, gone. She tried to imagine what her life would be like without her match, and only got a dull, hollow void. The light in her eyes went out, and her fire drained away, leaving her empty and barren.

She bowed her head, her spirit gone. "You'll have to take it," she whispered listlessly, her eyes closed. "I can't move my hands close enough."

Her sudden surrender banked his own fire, and Jor felt himself burn down to ashes. If he left this time, he knew he would never come back. And he didn't want that, couldn't possibly picture the future without her in it. And yet... Jor felt he had no other choice. It looked as if they were going to arrest him for her attack, lock him up forever, probably ship him to that same Institute they'd stuck Nathan. He was trapped, condemned by his own spark.

Leaning down, he pressed his forehead against her own bowed head. "Don't you see, spark?" His voice was broken as he whispered to her. "I don't want to take it." Jor kissed her gently on the top of her crown and moved toward the doctor, shoulders slumped in defeat. "She says it wasn't Nathan. I'm sure that DNA is mine, and it's obviously the only evidence you have. Bring the MP's in here, and I'll go quietly with them."

Wick's eyes lit at his words. He loved her, loved her as much as she loved him. She wouldn't let this happen. Her mind flared and whirred into action, and she made some very quick calculations as she turned to the doctor, her pale face and fiery eyes a dramatic contrast.

"Alright, doctor. You win. I was awake. I remember the whole thing in vivid graphic detail, and I'm not going to tell you what it was. What I will tell you is that Jor didn't do it, and I'll tell that to everyone else who asks me." Her voice was clear, with a strange feral edge to it. "They'll give me truth serum, and it still won't be Jor, and where will that leave you? You don't need that kind of idiot mark on your record any more than Jor does."

She turned her face back to Jor, kissed his cheek and drank in his eyes before she turned back to the doctor. "But if you have him arrested now," she growled, "I'll tell them all it was you. Do you have an alibi, doctor?" She saw his face flush as he stared at her in shock before she turned back to Jor again.

"I love you, match..." she whispered unevenly, leaning her head down, her forehead against his chin.

Dr. Muraida stared. He'd been watching this fascinating exchange in silence, and it became obvious to him that he was a little out of his depth to attempt to analyze their relationship...but it appeared his original assessment of Jor had been correct. He hadn't done anything wrong - nothing this girl would consider wrong, anyway.

He sighed and looked at Wick ruefully. "You've made your point," he said finally. "Jor, sit down. I'm not going to have you arrested, boy, but I need to tell the administration SOMETHING, and soon. If she doesn't name her attacker now, he may well go unpunished." The frustrated doctor sat down in one of the empty chairs and rubbed the back of his neck. "Maybe you can help me convince her."

Jor all but cried with relief at Wick's sudden turn of attack, his spirit reflaming as hers did, and he crawled into her bed again as the doctor sighed in resignment and sat down near them. Lifting her carefully, he slid beside her, an arm around her shoulder, her head resting gently on his chest as he smiled happily down at her. "Love you too, my spark. But now... it looks what we have something to discuss."

The man rubbed the back of his neck as he watched them carefully, and Jor lifted his head to stare back at him resolutely. "Convince her?" He sighed himself and kissed her forehead again. Placing a finger under her chin, he lifted her face until his jade eyes met her glacier ones. Whispering quiet enough so that the doctor would have a difficult time eavesdropping, his voice low, Jor spoke. "Please tell me, so that he can't ever hurt you again. Please, Wick. For me, so that I don't have to kill him to keep you safe."

Jor was safe, and Wick burned with victory, ignoring the small twinges as he moved her enough to accommodate himself, so intent was she on remembering every tiny sensation as he held her. He forgave her. He wouldn't let her die without him...but she couldn't let him die either.

"No," she said quietly, looking into his beautiful green eyes, so wonderfully close. "I'm not going to tell anyone. It wouldn't be worth it. Believe me."

Keeping his expression a perfect, calm mask, Jor leaned closer to press his mouth against her ear, breath cool on her skin as he whispered. "He said you made a deal with him." Then pulling away, he kissed her temple and spoke again in a normal tone. "What is it worth? Keeping you safe? I can do that, you know I will. Please spark..."

He glanced toward the doctor, shaking his head slightly. If she wouldn't tell him, he doubted she'd tell anyone. "Don't you have any evidence, sir? Did they check where she was attacked? Fingerprints, blood, there's got to be something. She won't tell, I can't make her, you can't make her. But I can't, I won't let him go without him paying for this. There must be something."

The doctor sighed and crossed his arms, sitting back.

"The MPs who went over the room didn't find any fingerprints at all, no evidence of any kind. They checked the doorpads and panels and the surface area surrounding where she was found. Just her prints on the Storage Bay entrance. He must have followed her in pretty closely, and then touched only...her." He cleared his throat, and then looked at Jor.

"Look, I've got some more tests to run. Why don't you stay here with her? The gelpaks will keep her from getting any infection now, sealed as they are. We'll be ready to do the skin graft later this evening, but we can't have her eat anything until then. I'm sure she would appreciate the distraction."

He stood up, went into the lab, and locked the door behind him.

Nothing. They'd found nothing, and Jor couldn't contain his frustration or concern any longer. Waiting until the lab door locked behind the doctor with a muffled click, he turned onto his side, cradling her against him with gentle arms. Resting his face in front of hers, Jor sighed tiredly and ran his fingertips along her bruised cheeks.

"Please, Wick, he's gone. Just tell me, at least... I know it was him. You heard what I said, he told me he made some sort of deal with you, and then he refused to fight me. It was that redhead who gave him the alibi, the other Institute girl... please, spark, tell me." He kissed her then, tenderly, and brought her hand up to his lips, kissed her ring. "Who are you trying to protect?"

He moved her arm, and the lack of feeling almost made her wince, but she didn't. She said nothing, just looked at him. His irises were light green, flecked with tiny hints of darker color, his lashes long and black. Such a handsome boy, her match. Her eyes took in his face, memorizing it, with the soft black curls that fell over his forehead. She unwillingly imagined what Nathan would do to him if she told. It strengthened her resolve against his loving pleading, and she remained silent.

She wasn't going to tell him.

Jor tightened his jaw, muscles tightening in his cheeks as he ran his gaze over her. Even with the bruises, the dried blood that they hadn't quite cleaned off completely, her arm set with gelpacks and half her body wrapped, she was so beautiful. His spark, her pale skin almost translucent as he pushing himself up on one elbow and pressed his lips to her bruised neck. Sighing a little against her skin, he whispered.

"If you're trying to protect me, spark, it's not going to work. He's crazy, his little bitch is crazy... look what he did to you. Whatever deal you think you made, he won't keep it, I know he won't. He hurt you, love, I can't let him get away free after that. So you either tell them that Nathan did it, so that they can stick him back into that Institute and we'll never have to see him again... or I'll kill him first. You know I will." Leaning back to stare into her eyes, his own hardened. "I'll do it."

She relaxed against him.

"I love you, Jor-dan," she whispered, her head on his shoulder, his warmth behind her. "I won't let him hurt you. He won't. He's not quite crazy...he doesn't hate you. He hates me, and he's done, and let's leave it, until we know it's safe...and then we can take our time." Vicious fire twisted and burned in her eyes when she met his gaze again. "And we will take our time, match." Visions of Nathan's face as he poured the fuel onto her arm, the last remembered sensations her skin there would ever feel as it slowly crisped away...

"And he will pay."

Satisfied with visions of their victory, Jor kissed Wick with sudden savagery, holding her face as he bit at her lower lip, green eyes blazing with triumphant fire behind closed lids. Nathan would pay for what he'd done to his spark. As her breathing quickened, and he could feel her heart pounding as he held her tight against him, Jor pulled away with a smirk of promised revenge.

They'd stood over Nathan, Dante, and Swede's broken bodies only two years ago.

After he was done with him, there'd be no Nathan left to break a second time.

"He will, my love. And we'll live on again without him." Hugging her gently, Jor sighed in happiness and closed his eyes. He and his spark were one again, in the one thing they did best. Revenge.

The doctor re-entered the main infirmary and paused.

Wick and Jor were asleep.

Moving as quietly as possible, he set up the necessary drugs for the skin graft operation. The nurse was already in the small surgery with the necessary equipment and the vat-grown graft. When he had finished assembling the drugs, he turned around to see that Wick was awake. She pursed her lips in a "shh" gesture, and allowed him to lift her to another cot.

Jor shifted a little, a frown creasing his brow slightly, but didn't wake up. The doctor wheeled her into the surgery and shut the door.

"You're going to be out for about three hours. When you wake up, the graft will be in place, with the regen units over it to speed up healing. By that point we should be able to take the unit off your other arm, as well. We'll need to leave a unit on your ankle until tomorrow morning, and it'll be tender for a few days, so take it easy, ok?"

The anesthesia took over, and Wick drifted away.

She woke up much much later, and immediately tried to open her eyes. It took a few moments for them to comply, and when they did it was very slowly. The room was dark, but there was a warm presence near her hand. Jor...?

"Shhhh, Spark, close your eyes, I'm here." Jor moved his hand to touch her fingers, tracing lightly as he smiled at her from his perch in the bedside chair. He'd woken up an hour or so earlier to find her gone, bed cold and operating room door shut tightly. It was a long few hours until they wheeled her back out, and he'd waited patiently, watching her until her eyes began to flutter open lightly. "Your whole graft thing is all done... he said I could take you out of here in the morning, you hear that?" He bent to kiss her open palm gently, avoiding the IV lines taped to her skin.

She relaxed back into the pillow. Her left arm felt...strange. Her right arm seemed functional, just a little sore, and she reached out to trace Jor's arm up to his shoulder and then delicately past his ear to run it into the lovely thick dark curls she hadn't been able to touch before. She still felt muzzy and strange from the drugs, and sighed. "'m sorry, Jorness. For...what I said, I didn't mean it, not .. at all."

He closed his eyes as she ran a hand through his hair, unconsciously tilting his head toward her as he felt her warm fingers graze his neck and ear. Jor pushed his chair closer, leaned down to kiss her gently on the lips, and sighed against her skin. "I know you didn't, Spark, I didn't mean it either... shhh, don't worry. Everything's okay, you're almost all better, and then I get to take you back with me. I... I love you, Wick." His voice choked a little before he could stop it, and kissing her again, Jor managed a crooked smile. She'd be able to walk out that door in the morning, by his side once again, and the thought made his green eyes soften as they ran over her face. "I love you, my Spark."

"Love you..too, Jor...I...just wanted...you to be safe..." Her throat closed up, and she swallowed. Even this far under drugged influence, she wouldn't cry. Not for this. She was happy he was there, happy he'd forgiven her, even without understanding why she'd done what she had.

A tear rolled down her cheek, making her gasp a little with its warmth on her cold skin.

His eyes melted to forest pools, and Jor had to rub them roughly with his sleeve before he could wipe the tear that ran down Wick's bruised cheek. He leaned to kiss it tenderly from her skin, voice husky when he finally spoke. "I'm safe, and you are now too... I'm, I'm so sorry I let him hurt you, Wick, I didn't know..."

Fingering the cool coral band of her ring, he failed at a smile, had to lower his head to rest it gently against her hand as he held it to his forehead. "I'm sorry, spark..."

Wick managed some semblance of a smirk.

"No...Jor....they'll be sorry, not us, match....them." She brought her right hand to his head again, tangled fingers in his curls and tightened her grip, pulled him up slowly to kiss him a little clumsily on the cheek. "Sorry, for...for making me...say all those mean...things to you....to keep you safe from them." She said this with her lips nearly on his skin, eventually finding his own and kissing him, her uncoordination making it strange and out of sync, but his closeness made her warm inside.

Keep him safe from who? Jor's eyes narrowed in puzzlement, but fell closed as Wick tugged him close, kissing him with shaky lips. He moved closer then, holding her face carefully in his hands as he kissed her softly. Then pulling away, he straightened, and began to move her IV lines and wires out of the way, making enough room against her side for him to fit. Climbing awkwardly onto the cot in the dark gloom of the infirmary, Jor settled against her, careful not to disturb her as he kissed her cheek and rested a hand gently on her stomach.

"Shhh, get some rest now, spark... sooner you wake, sooner we can leave... shhh. I love you... nite spark..." Closing his eyes, he nestled deeper into the bed, shivering briefly with thoughts of bloody retribution.

Wick dreamed.

Thick heavy swaths of darkness wrapped her like a blanket, and she felt nothing but cold. She could see nothing at all. The inky blackness was heavy with the smell of petrol, but what made her shiver was the echoing, distorted sound that drifted to her, muffled by the night. Somewhere in the novocaine mist, Mode was chuckling at her.

Broken images of Angel as he'd been before floated past her as the sound intensified, becoming less distorted, closer. She remembered the way his face had looked when she'd knocked him out after Jor beat him nearly senseless. He'd been...broken. Confused. Defeated. Pathetic.

That boy was a stranger to the demon who hovered near her now. His face became visible, burning silver eyes hovering over hers as he leaned down to crush his lips against hers, bloody from the lip he'd split, and then she was burning, but instead of her arm it was inside, twisted nerves somehow taking the pain of Jor's possession and adding the agony of the fire, because her arm would never pain her again. Nerves were dead, all dead, and the numbness spread out in a rapid wave and consumed her as she struggled to breathe -

And woke, gasping, in Jor's arms.

The lights flickered on seconds later.

Through the dark peacefulness of half-conscious sleep came Wick's gasp, and the floodgates of his veins opened in synchronization, adrenaline knocking him almost senseless as Jor tightened his grip around her and sat straight up, eyes wide open and muscles tensed to defend his love.

Only, there was no one there. No Nathan.

He flicked his eyes around the room warily, serpentine orbs slitted until he noticed her quick breathing, her heartbeat pounding against him. Shocked back to awareness, Jor glanced down at Wick, the blinding light of the infirmary overheads constricting her pupils so much she squinted to see him. Placing a gentle hand over her face, he closed her eyes and laid her back down, strong arms still encircling her with all the protective calm he could manage to find.

"Shhhh, spark, it's okay, it's just me, he's not here, you're safe..." his voice rambled on, lips pressed against her ear as he stroked her bruised cheeks with his fingertips and tried to sooth her. "Wick, it's okay..." But Jor could feel his own heart in its staccato drumbeat, and clenching his teeth against her fear, he swallowed his own and continued to speak. "Shhh, spark..."

Wick shuddered and blinked her eyes rapidly before she managed to get them to stay closed as she leaned back against Jor, her muscles slowly relaxing as she hissed breath in through her gritted teeth. His warm strength behind her helped to calm her, but his heartbeat moved as quickly as hers did, and took even longer to slow pace. She gripped his hand hard and turned her face into his throat and allowed herself some silent whimpers of fearful relief.

Under the glaring lights, with Wick held tightly in his arms and her face buried into his throat as she whimpered, Jor suddenly felt exposed and wary. There was no threat; at least, none that he could sense... but with her shoulders shaking slightly as her muscles relaxed, he couldn't shake the feeling. Smoothing her hair with a rough hand, he wrapped himself around her in an attempt to provide whatever comfort she needed. But he wanted out.

Leaning down, he whispered softly, breath hot against her skin. "I want to go, can I take you out of here now? Come back with me, we can sneak out and be safe in my room, I'll skip classes and stay with you all day... it's okay, Wick, shh I'm here..."
