Wick stalked into the Game Arena and looked around.

The room was large, and housed all sorts of recreation for the Command School students. Ping pong tables, air hockey, chess, checkers, backgammon and other board games, pugil sticks for the fighting simulator, and all manner of other electronic strategy and coordination-based games.

Against the back wall were four pods, the interface for the combat simulator. With only four pods instead of the normal seventeen in the large simulation rooms, nothing larger than a cell could practice, but it was fun for soldiers from other armies to get together, fighting each other or working as a team.

Wick headed towards the combat simulators, slipping into the pod farthest to the right, and punched up a single fighter simulation.

Lounging lazily at one of the game tables toward the back of the arena, propped back in a chair and watching the room with bored disinterest in his blue eyes, Nicolai was nevertheless brought to full attention as a girl he'd never seen before stalked in. Average height, short black hair, the strong but willowy structure of a younger girl... nothing much to peak his interest. Except those eyes; glacier blue and full of ice, frustrated and angry. Most of the girls here were passive, and Nicolai held nothing but scorn... what good were females in the military anyway? Just got in the way, all hung up on flirting and too weak at command. But this one looked different.

Perhaps a challenge, perhaps not. He'd never been turned away before. Nicolai always, always got his way. That self-serving arrogant, egotistical attitude had gotten him far-- through battleschool, now as a right-hand man for his quad commander. He'd advanced through his classes quickly, now an early navigational major. Nic had all he wanted. And now, he wanted this girl.

Strolling quickly over toward the simulators, he slipped into the pod next to her with a smirk on his face. Donning the headset and selecting himself a single-pilot fighter, he settled back against the seat and fiddled with the controls. Like all things, Nic excelled at the simulator. Time to show off for his prey.

He moved his fighter until it followed that of the girl's, shooting closely behind her wings; not close enough to cause damage, but close enough that her ship rocked slightly with the force of attack. Smiling to himself, he whispered in the headset to her, voice silky. "Heya there, darling, just a little hello to such a beautiful girl... care to play, sweetheart?"

Wick was just nailing down the navigational controls when her whole ship shuddered. The computer simulator flashed up with a Proximity Alert warning, and she hit the button for the reverse display with a quiet curse.

Another fighter.

The mission she'd selected was basically an orientation. There was no reason for any other ships to be there, unless there was someone else in the simulator. After studying the screen for a moment, she located the simulator link indicator in the top right-hand corner of the screen. Two ships of four were lit, not just one.

Perfect.

She reached for the headset and put it on in time to hear "...just a hello to such a beautiful girl... care to play, sweetheart?"

Her lip curled in distaste. Few of the boys in battleschool had ever had the nerve to approach her. Jor had been something of a special situation. Since then, no one had come near her, and right now she wasn't in the mood to deal with ANY boys, much less some moron buggerbait trying to kill her in the simulator.

Wick hit reverse thrust, sending her fighter screaming backwards, the lower set of primary lasers barely clearing his dorsal array. She didn't know how to fire the guns yet, but he couldn't possibly know that...and in a few seconds, she would, and then he could "play" all he wanted.

Nic grinned to himself as she threw her fighter in a screeching reverse thrust, her ship barely clearing his. With deft movements, he banked his fighter to the side, throwing it into a spin that circled her, his wingtips almost clipping hers. If she thought she could outmaneuver him, especially as a newcomer, she was too confident. There was a reason his quad was top-ranked, a reason virtually no one would play him on the simulator. No one had enough guts.

But Nic liked the fiesty ones.

His fighter flipped around hers again, and laughed at her awkward defense maneuver, his voice smooth and mocking. "That the best you can do, darlin'?" Nic moved flew his ship in tight loops, too close for her to escape, a little near for comfort. But he was only toying with her, careful to aim his shots to where they'd only knock her proximity alerts, and he could hear the anxious bleeping noises through her headset. He laughed again into his speaker, twisting his fighter in a salute. "C'mon, show me whatcha got..."

Jor managed to restrain himself from rolling his eyes at Bianca, but couldn't keep the slightly mocking, sarcastic tone from his voice. "Only you, Commander." Polite enough to avoid reprimand, biting enough that he hoped she might catch the hint. But his answer had a little twinge of truth, he knew, as he watched her move lithely around the room toward the simulators.

With a grin, he slid into the pod adjacent to hers, smirking at her as he donned the headset and closed the lid. Tapping the mic, he selected a single fighter and spoke, his voice low. "Ready to rumble, Bianca?"

Furious, Wick finally deciphered the weapon controls and blasted forward, away from the other fighter. She needed some space to turn around, and the taunting circles were beginning to drive her nuts.

Ignoring his comments, she dove away from him, down into the starry void. An obstruction loomed, and she looped around it - some sort of asteroid or other obstacle. She cut her forward drive for a split second, and the back of her ship swung backwards, turning her ship about, and when the other fighter came around the corner, she fired a volley that scored glancingly on his left engine before he darted away. It only caused cosmetic damage, but it made her point, and she followed him as he retreated.

"A little clumsy, aren't we?" she said into the headset, smirking.

And then the other two fighters lighted up on her display, and a voice she knew very well said, "Ready to rumble, Bianca?" Wick went cold. He didn't seem upset over their little tussle this morning...and neither was Bianca, she was willing to bet. Whoever the hell BIANCA was. She started scanning, but couldn't find the other two fighters.

"Always, Jorry," Bianca said sweetly, smoothly maneuvering her fighter into a proper flying position with Jor's. He picked up on the controls well, straightening his own fighter out. At least he wasn't slow. "Let's see how are little friends are doing, shall we?" She brought up the scanner and quickly located the other two fighters. One of them was just orienting towards them. The other was skimming away.

Bianca targeted and fired. Her target was obviously a newbie, and used the smaller jets to maneuver out of the way. Her attack hit the right engine, and the rest of the fighter exploded in a plume of fire and smoke and then disappeared, while the pods rumbled a little with the force of the explosion that the end pod transmitted.

"Nothing to it, Jor. Let's see you take the other one, eh?" Bianca could tell that the other pilot was obviously less green than the one she'd taken out. Jor could use the humbling experience.

Nic was still reorienting himself after his prey's clumsy attack when the lights indicating other pilots blinked at the corner of his screen, and he heard two new voices on the other end. One he didn't recognize. One he did. Bianca.

His playmate's ship was suddenly blasted away, exploding with such force that his own fighter rocked slightly. Bianca's voice came through, taunting. "Nothing to it, Jor. Let's see you take the other one, eh?" Nic smirked to himself. Bring it on, beetcha...

He threw his fighter into a spinning bank just as Jor fired at him. Too easy to destroy this one yet, so he flipped a few circles, cutting close then spinning away. The other boy was learning, quickly, but was still too slow to escape as Nic flew his fighter upside down and cut loose his missiles. The ship blew in a dazzling array of flame, and with a laugh, Nic turned to the other fighter.

"Long time no see, Bianca..." He dodged her quick counter-attack, turning in a quick loop that placed him straight behind her. He could hear her quiet curse, which turned to an exclamation as he blasted her away too. No enemies left. What a fun game.

Tossing off his headset, Nic flipped the door to the pod open, lounging in his seat as Bianca's pod opened. "Heya sweetie."

Throwing off her headset, Bianca practically threw herself out of her pod, glaring at Nicolai. No wonder he was able to take her out so easily. Nicolai's talent in the sim was legendary...so legendary that he didn't even bother practicing in the game room anymore. He reserved an empty SimRoom and ran a scout through impossible odds.

Scouts had little armor and little weaponry, but they were extremely maneuverable and had superior sensor arrays. There were rumors he'd taken scouts through all of the single-fighter missions, and even through some of the multi-fighter missions successfully.

So she wasn't really upset, just irritated that her little training lesson had been disrupted. "Don't you have anything better to do than interrupt a training session, Nicolai?" Jor's head appeared as he stepped out of his pod, looking angry. "Jor, this is Nicolai, one of the little navigational addicts I was telling you about. He runs the scout for Phoenix Quad."

The fourth pod was still closed, and she glanced toward it, wondering what the newbie was still in there for. Wasn't it clear that the game was over?

His awkward maneuvers hadn't helped him any as the other fighter blew him from the game, and more than a little irritated at his swift defeat, Jor hissed into his headset, almost throwing it to the floor. Then climbing from the pod with annoyance on his features, he nodded as Bianca introduced him to his destroyer. "Ho, Nicolai."

Jor moved toward Bianca, leaning against the pod beside her as she glared at Nicolai. He eyed the other pod with confusion. "Where's your partner, he still in there?" Bianca too was glancing at the closed simulator with some confusion, and he nudged her lightly as they waited for the newbie to emerge.

Nicolai smirked at Bianca's anger, answering smoothly, slightly taunting. "If anything, you interrupted me... I was just sittin' here, playing with my little partner in the other sim, 'til you showed up and blew her away. What, you angry I beat ya?" He knew as well as she did that her defeat had been no challenge for him, and he enjoyed seeing her chagrin. She introduced her soldier, and Nicolai nodded politely as the boy spoke. "Ho, Jor."

He then glanced toward his playmate's pod, still closed, and he raised an eyebrow at Bianca and Jor. "I think my darling's a little mad you knocked her outta the game so quickly. Doncha worry, I'll get her out." He winked and slid from his seat, opening the door as she glared angrily out. The quiet hiss from Jor as the girl came into view did not escape his notice, but Nicolai held out a hand to the girl, smiling with all the extravagent chivalry he could manage. "Step on out, baby, and meet our enemies, eh?"

Knocking the offered hand aside, Wick stepped out of the pod unaided, turned and openly glared at Jor. Her next glare, though more subdued, was directed at Bianca, taking the older girl in with a single scathing glance.

"We've met," she said evenly, the emotion vanishing from her features, her fire concentrating in her eyes instead as she looked at Jor again.

Wick. Nicolai's partner had been his spark.

Jor's hissed intake of breath when he spotted her earned him a fiery glare, and if he hadn't been leaning against the pod beside Bianca, he probably would have taken a step back. What had he done wrong? If anything, she was to blame, shoving him away like that and now acting as if he were the bad guy. He loved her. Maybe she didn't love him.

That thought made his serpentine eyes narrow, even as he felt a rush of remorse. He could just imagine what she was thinking right now, seeing him with Bianca, his commander all cozying up. But another rush of angry fire erupted, and for a moment, Jor didn't care. He just set his features resolutely, squared his shoulders, and gave Wick stare for stare.

"Yes," he said shortly. "We have." Jor turned to Bianca, tapping her shoulder. "What now, Bianca?"

As Bianca watched the exchange, a slow smile spread across her full lips. This must be the girl Jor had so much trouble with earlier today. The jealous anger on the girl's face vanished almost instantly, but not before Bianca spotted it for what it was.

Bianca looked the girl over. Not much to recommend her. No real defined figure, no art in her hair style. Her skin was really too pale to hold any sort of blush. Her eyes seemed unnaturally vivid in the pale background, her hair too black. She did have a sort of poise, but it was what Bianca associated with the boys, not the girls, a dynamic aggressiveness that seemed out of place in the slender girl. Her face might have been pretty, if she hadn't been so very pale, if her eyes weren't such a harsh contrast. Under Bianca's terms, not a very attractive girl.

Not much competition.

When Jor questioned her, she knew exactly what to say.

"Well, I think we've had enough pod practice for your first day, Jorry. Why don't we head back to the barracks? I still have a few things to go over with you." She smiled at him, flicking her eyes over him quickly before turning back to Nicolai. "See you, Nic." She barely glanced at the girl and then left.

"Sounds just fine, Bianca." Jor managed a cocky grin at her, his eyes flicking over her as hers did the same. She turned to leave, and Jor nodded with boyish comradery at Nicolai. "Good shootin', Nic. Nice meeting you." His gaze dragged over Wick for the briefest moment, flashing jade at her anger. Unable to define what he was feeling, he gave her a quiet stare. "See you, Wick."

Then with a quick turn, he smiled again at Bianca as he followed her from the game arena, back to the quad barracks. And all he could think of as he watched her sauntering walk was What am I going to do about Wick?

None of Wick and Jor's interchange had been lost on Nicolai, and he felt another sudden surge of arrogant victory coming near. Obviously some sort of lover's spat. Perfect time to make his move... and after all, it wasn't as if she'd decline. No girl had ever refused his attentions before; at least, not for long. Maybe this pale, fiery girl could be a challenge.

And so Nicolai slid close to a still fuming Wick, slipping an arm around her waist before she could protest. He pulled her along as he started to stride from the game arena, his strong fingers holding her belt loop securely. Aggressiveness had gotten him everywhere. He doubted she'd resist for long.

"So, your name is Wick, eh? Nice to meet you, sweetheart. I'm Nicolai, quickest scout on this asteroid... but you can call me Nic." He winked cockily at her, still propelling her forcefully across the room. "Why don't we grab a drink and get acquainted, hmm?"

Wick watched, incredulous rage dancing in her ice-blue eyes, as Jor followed Bianca out of the Game Room, a smile on his lips. His tiny half-glance backwards, tinged with jealousy, did nothing to stem her growing rage.

And then Nicolai was touching her, putting his arm around her waist, babbling some idiocy about getting a drink together or something. He was also half-dragging her across the floor, his fingers locked in her beltloops.

Wick had had enough.

She ducked and twisted, his fingers ripping free of her beltloops as she brought her fist around and into his stomach, enough to knock the air out of him and make him gasp. She shoved him away and he lost his balance, stumbling and landing sitting down on the floor, a shocked look on his face. "Don't you EVER do anything like that again, flicker," she growled menacingly, and then turned and left the Game Room, barely registering his shock darkening into rage. He didn't matter. Jor didn't either, she railed at herself...but couldn't quite believe it.

Even as Nic sprawled on the floor, outraged, his face darkening angrily, he couldn't help but feel some measure of respect for this girl. But that respect was quickly consumed by arrogant surprise. How dare she embarass him like that, in public. He, Nicolai Ivanovich Mishkin, second-in-command for top-ranked Phoenix Army, the best goddamn navigator scout on this entire sorry asteroid. No one ever dared to mess with Nicolai.

No one, that is, until this Wick girl.

Nicolai was pissed. But he was also unwillingly intrigued. This one was definitely a challenge, and having always gotten his way, he had little doubt as to his eventual success. It wasn't the end product that excited him, however. It was the thrill of the hunt. And this promised to be a very fun chase.

Standing slowly, he brushed his uniform clean, straightening with a glare around the room. Wick would pay for the damage to his pride. With a smirk to himself, his bright blue eyes shining, Nicolai sauntered from the game arena, already scheming.

Mat made it to the game arena just in time to watch the end of a game on the overhead screen. Interesting, very interesting, he thought, not at all like battle school. He waited until everything was finished and then proceeded to enter one of the pods.

"Let's see, what this baby can do." he murmured to himself.

Helen spotted the sims first thing when she got into the game room. The looked a bit newer than the ones back at battle school and people actually seemed to use them. After Castor had left she'd have to go hunting down people to play with her, and they died out early, but here it would be more fun. She picked a pod and hopped in, closing the door behind her. She looked over the controls, remembering the instructions that Castor had told her on the way, he was just as excited about playing together again as she was. She pulled on the headset. The pods were a little different from the ones back at battleschool, but the basic idea was pretty much the same. "Hey Cas, ya ready?"

Cas hopped in next to Helen and got on the headset. "Just a sec, Helen. Pilot 3, I've got a newbie here. What say we keep to ourselves for now, eh?" He said this mostly for Pilot 3's sake, whoever it was. "Helen, switch to channel two. The main channel is if all four people are working together or there's just a free-for-all." He switched channels, waited until she clicked over, and grinned to himself. This was going to be awesome.

"Computer, level one."

It took Helen a minute to find the controls to the headset, but she found it and switched the channel. She waited until the computer loaded up the simulation. The screen blinked on, stars filling her veiw. Much nicer indeed than the ones at battle school. She went through the first few levels with boredom as the computer gave her a non-moving target to shoot at. She quickly blew it up and went on to shooting moving targets. After a little while the computer started loading targets that shot back, not very well, but it was a step. "You know Cas," she said as she blew up the next target. "The computer's gotta be a lot meaner if it's going to try and kill us. How are the higher levels? Impossible? If not, by the time we're done here we're gonna beat them." She played around with the controls, putting her fighter into a spin as she waited for the next target to load.

Castor grinned as he watched her pulverize the lower levels. She was right. This was taking forever, and pretty pointless. She had the system down. He wanted to play as a team again.

"You're right. Screw this. Computer, Level 36." That gave them 10 opponents with relatively smart AI pilots, superior armament and faster drives.

Somewhere around level 63 they were finally destroyed, but Helen had gone the last two levels almost by herself. Castor's ship had been massively crippled by then, and he'd just been tagging along, firing at safe targets when he could. When the enemy finally managed to kill them it was with a cluster bomb, and took out several of the enemy ships as well.

He peeled his headset off and sat back. He had no idea what time it was. He could barely remember his name. He'd never gotten the computer to go that far before. Helen was nothing short of phenomenal.

He crawled out of the pod, his legs weak and shaky from a couple of hours of tension, and helped Helen from hers. She was a little shaky too, and smiling almost as wide as he was. There was scattered applause in the room, and Castor looked around. They'd gotten an audience. The overhead display had at least 20 soldiers fastened on it with rapt attention. Castor grinned at Helen, running a hand through his damp hair and then tousling hers. "I think you're gonna do ok here, pilot," he said and laughed.

Helen stumbled out of the pod, her legs shaky from spending so much time in the sim. Greatful for Castors help, she straightened herself up. And stood dumbfounded at the small audience that had gathered watching the screen outside... she hadn't even noticed it the screen when she walked in and they certainly didn't have it back at battleschool. She guessed that the sims here were a bit of a bigger deal than the ones at battleschool, but no one was interested in those anyhow. She giggled as Castor tousled her hair.

Stretching her legs she judged that they'd been in the sim a couple hours... her commander would not be happy that it was taking this long for her to check in...commanders got irritable like that some times. "Hey Cas, maybe we should head back before Sasha decides to hunt his new soldier down." She smiled looking back at the pods agian... it was going to be just like it was before.

Still drunk on their stunning victory, he grinned at her playfully. "Damn, pilot, I don't think anyone can be angry about having you around. But you're right," he sighed, "we'd better go." He started towards the door and then stopped and turned, a truly serious look on his face with a hint of sincere smile. "It's really good to have you back, Helen. I, uh, missed you." Before he embarrassed himself any further, he turned and left, tugging her with him, his hand in hers.

Castor entered the Game Room.

Sasha was already there, awake and alert and looking impatient to be done with this foolishness. He eyed Helen coldly and then turned back to Castor. "Alright, get her in the simulator. Nicolai's waiting."

One of the simulator pods was already closed.

Castor blinked, and then turned to Helen. "Ready?" he said, his voice low and thrumming with excitement.

Helen climbed into the pod, her tension fading away when she saw Castors excitement. She smiled back at him. "Ready as I'll ever be. I'll see you when I'm done." She closed the pod. Giving a sigh, she pulled out the headset and settled into her seat, gripping the controls waiting for the sim to start... she could do this... she really could... Cas had said it himself...

Ridiculous. Nicolai thought to himself as his veg opponent crawled into her own sim pod. He'd been settled into his for a few minutes already, tapping his fingers idly against the display, impatient. Stupid Sasha, dragging him in here to beat the shit out of his new girl Scout-wannabe... what had her name been? Helen? One of Dante's old soldiers from Fox. He smirked to himself, remembering what Rox had told him this morning about Sasha's request to show his newbie who was boss. "Sasha can suck it, you're gonna win. Recockulous, this deal is."

And true. No one had ever beaten, or gotten close to beating, Nicolai at the sim. He was the best, pure and simple. Like he told people who didn't appreciate his attitude-- cocky and arrogant for a reason. Because he always, always won.

He could hear his opponent put on her headset, and with a sardonic, smooth voice he spoke to her. "Ready to be blown away, little sweetheart? I hear your defeat coming already..." With a quick slap, Nicolai punched the start button on his sim and the scenario began. He had his scout, and could see the enemy in the distance.

The mission ran smoothly, like clockword. He'd been through every level of the sim before, and this was child's play at first, his scout blowing through each level with ease. Toward the upwards of Level 80, however, even Nicolai had to concentrate solely on his display, driving closer, sneaking behind planets and into hidden obstacles with caution. Wary and even angry that he'd had to fight some greenhorn this early in the morning, before he'd had time for proper warmup, he plunged on, gradually growing more daring and risky with his scout.

And then... "Goddamnit!" Nicolai cursed wildly into his headset, a tirade of obscenity as he was blown away. Level 98, two from winning the entire simulator again. Throwing his headset angrily against the display, he threw open the pod door, surprised to see a large group of soldiers standing around, staring at the overhead screen. A little of his arrogant attitude dropped, just for a moment, wondering if the girl had beaten him. But no, she was already out of her pod, and with a cocky wink at her, Nicolai settled down and ran a hand through his hair.

"What'did I say, eh, darlin'? Looks like I won this round... don't waste my time again, Sasha. Find the Hydra scout to do your work." With that, Nicolai stalked away, ignoring the stares of the other soldiers.

Castor watched, spellbound, as the two best pilots he knew worked through the simulator like well-oiled machines.

Helen was a little jumpy at first. She hadn't flown the Scout model before, but the controls were the same. It just went a lot faster and did less damage. He could tell when she got the hang of it. He wished the pods weren't closed in. He liked to watch her face when she dropped into the level between concentration and trance as she really set to work.

Fifty levels. Sixty. Sixty-five.

Sasha's mouth fell open, his eyes round as saucers as he watched Helen move through the levels.

At seventy-eight it looked like she was done for, but she managed to fall back in time and hit the supply ship just before the next level began.

When she finally got blown away at the very end of eight-nine, Sasha was strangely silent for someone who'd been so eager to have the girl out of his army. Castor went to help Helen out of the pod as Nicolai continued his fight alone.

Sasha had recovered by the time Castor brought her over. She was a little shaky, but she stood at attention anyway. Sasha looked her over. She wasn't much to look at. Too young for his taste, anyway. But for her second day on the station, what she'd just done with the simulator wasn't a talent. It was a gift. Before everything else, Sasha was a commander, and this was one resource he was not willing to waste.

He turned away. "Scout," he growled, shaking his head.

Castor hugged Helen wildly. "WOW! YOU WERE GREAT!! How did you...uh. Maybe you'd better sit down." Helen looked a lot more shaky than she had a minute ago, and he guided her to a seat and joined her himself while Sasha watched Nicolai's last few levels with half-hearted fascination.

She's lost... Helen approached Sasha, shakey from being in the sim so long. She stiffened to attention waiting for a repremand of some kind... a reprimand that never came. He only said "scout."

What Sasha had said took a minute to kick in... she'd done it! Nicholai was still in the sim though, Sasha watching the monitor intently. Helen greatfully let Castor guide her to a chair and sat down. Her legs felt like jello, but at least she was out of the sim pods. She rolled her shoulders back a few times, getting the kinks out. She'd have to get used to this if this is how long battles lasted.

She smiled to Castor, "Thanks for sticking around. It was nice to know that someone was cheering for me out here." Helen turned when she heard the second pod open and Nicholai walk out.

"What'did I say, eh, darlin'? Looks like I won this round... don't waste my time again, Sasha. Find the Hydra scout to do your work."

Helen only stared. God that kids arrogent. Reminds me of some of the Griffins back at battle school. Seeing some of the soldiers starting to wander out of the Game Arena she suggested to Castor. "What do you saw we go get some food?" She stood up and took a step away from the chair, her legs giving out on her and she fell, Castor catching her and helping her straighten out. "Guess my legs are a bit weak after that. Come on, I'm starving."

Castor grinned and nodded. "Anything you say, Scout..." he laughed and nodded to Sasha, who nodded back at him, and then grudgingly at Helen. At least this girl had some redeeming quality to her. Maybe Cas would lighten up now that he had a girl to play with.

The other girl, on the other hand, looked absolutely useless. Sasha sighed. It was uphill battle, being commander. The administration loved to pull the rug out from under you just when you were finally happy with who you had.

He watched Castor and Helen leave together and then left himself, heading back towards the barracks and his quarters to file the position change for Helen and the report. His Scout had been one of the graduated few. He just hoped the girl responded as well under real pressure as she did in the game room. If not, she was low-ranked fighter the day after she lost them their first battle.

Swede shoved through a group of soldiers blocking the entrance to the game arena, scowling in reply to their frowns, and Pallas followed close behind her, sighing. She just smirked at her perfectly poised quadmate, shaking the long red-streaked blonde spikes from her turquoise eyes as she led the way toward the empty sim pods.

"Coomon, Pallaz, vat zay yoo vee keeck zome azz at dee zimz, neh? Been a loong time zinze our lazt battle, doon't vanna geet ruztee, now do vee?" Swede raised the lid to one of the pods, sliding into the seat with a smile toward Pallas. The other girl climbed into the adjoining pod, and securing the headset, Swede laughed and hit the start button. "Fite time, Pallaz..."

Pallas grinned and slipped into her own pod, picking up the headset. "If you're ready for another beating, I'll be happy to help you out." Their games were almost always even. They took turns winning...but Pallas had won the last game, and Swede always had the most interesting responses to her little prods.

They dropped into the Sim and she began to circle slowly until she spotted Swede's fighter and moved into position. Swede caught sight of her at almost the same time, and the battle was joined.

The feeling the Jayde brothers received upon entering the Game Arena was similar to that of the feeling they encountered upon first stepping into the Game Room of BS. It was as if competition sizzled in the very air... punctuated by the sounds of vidgames and arcade music, an essential portion every teenage boy's nirvana... They wandered off in solos, pairs, groups of three... Tony and Kevo happened to go off on their own until they came to the main part, the sim area with four cockpits, two of which were already being occupied by two very attractive girls.

Kevo caught his breath, very uncharacteristically bewildered at the sight of the young black-haired girl in one of the pods. Gods, who was she... her features seemed European, but her skin was as olive as had been the ancient princesses' of Polynesia and Malay... her eyes were soft and intelligent, as green as the Pacific at high noon. Strange that Kevo still thought of home after all this time... even stranger were the things that reminded him of it.

Tony on the other hand was by no means intimidated by any woman's presence, and this situation was no different. With the slick grace of a snake, he slid up to where the spike-haired blonde one sat in her cockpit and laid on rich his Italian accent. "Donna amore... Hey, girl, wassup...?" He ducked deftly down into the pod with her, not for a single moment releasing her entrancing turquoise eyes from his gaze. Picking her hand up, Tony brought it closer and brushed it against his lips, smiling gently even though the girl was looking at him in disdain. He had Bryo to thank for that move. Fuck Oris and his "Tony can't pimp" shit- what the hell did the man think this was, servicing?

"My name is Antonio. How would you lovely girls feel about playing a game against me and my brother Kevo here?"

Shooting Tony a disdainful glare as he took her hand, brushing it against his lips as he stared at her, Swede's turquoise eyes narrowed in annoyance. She tilted her head slightly, studying him, long red-streaked spikes falling across her face as she pulled her hand away, slapping him lightly on his cheek before nodding at Pallas.

"Vat zay yoo, Pallaz... vee teech deez greeyaz hoo can flyee bettaire? Geet oot, flazhboy, and coom fight uz... dat eez, unlezz yoo be afreed uv loozeeng to uz gurlz..." her tone was taunting, mocking even as she ran her gaze over this handsome Italian boy who'd managed to slide his way into her pod. Arrogant, cocky, someone who thought he was so smooth and could always get his way... well, Antonio hadn't met the likes of Swede. She didn't like anyone.

Which made it even more fun to toy with him.

Fluttering her eyelashes at him with sudden coyness, Swede returned her attention to the display and resettled her headset, a wicked smirk flickering across her lips as she waited to blow these bastards out of space.

Pallas lifted her head in annoyance when the battlepod seal process was halted, and her eyebrows raised a little when she saw a tall, handsome italian boy sliding into Swede's pod, his body interrupting the safety sensor and sending the hatches back up.

She watched their exchange with mild amusement. Swede must be in a good mood today. The boy had been in close proximity for almost ten seconds and only suffered a light slap to the cheek.

"My name is Antonio. How would you lovely girls feel about playing a game against me and my brother Kevo here?"

Her eyes flicked to the boy standing next to Swede's pod. He had soft-looking black hair and brown eyes, and looked Polynesian, and a good three inches taller than her. He was looking at her with a strange, wistful expression that made her want to watch him longer, but Swede's invitation drew her attention away.

"Always. Let's make this one fast, though." She grinned wickedly at Swede, still making eyes at the Italian Antonio, and pushed the button for pod launch again. "Better hurry. The pods close fast."

Tony flashed a wily smile for both girls and left to slide into the third pod, motioning for Kevo to take the last. He slipped on the headset and his window flickered awake, displaying a magnificent panorama of stars, galaxies and planets, even a charming little graphic of a purple nebula in the distance. "Jayde." said Tony, "Get your ass in gear, bichino. You ready?" A moment and Kevo's voice answered calmly into his earpiece, "I'm always ready. Don't waste our time, brother, watch your ship and I'll watch both of ours."

The game began, the two girls' enemy fliers appeared not too far away on the display. Tony rushed in first, Kevo following more cautiously behind. Now, it must be explained that in any situation where Jayde graduates are put on the same fleet against a common enemy, there occurs a certain phenomena that enables them to know each others' motives, their tactics and habits so effectively and flawlessly that they seem to have the same mind. It was an essential part of Jayde training for each man to know his men so well that they are able to work as one being, always aware of every unit the way the Formics had been aware of theirs. It had been a theory that Ryan's father had elaborated to this point; so far it seemed to have been a stroke of genius. When the time came, the brothers would be able to equal their enemy's lethal military union and double it, for even if they did not have the true single mind that the buggers dominated, they also had human initiative and individuality on their side when it would be needed. In this situation, Kevo knew that Tony would be quick, ruthless and brilliant if rather rash, but he he himself could be the remedy for that. And Tony knew that Kevo would keep his calm analytical genius no matter how heated combat could become, and that he could always be counted upon to be aware of the enemy's approach to their offense. The sound of intensely focused, prodigious silence- it was the Warcry of Jayde. Now... if only they could beat these girls without making them too angry...

Davn watched his brothers have at it with the two girls for several moments... It was amazing that as huge a jackass as Tony had been being before the game started, that was how much a part of the single mind he had become once it began... same as Kevo's tolerant annoyance seemed to dissipate with this common goal. Davn knew- with much to prove it- that he himself was an essential part of their Jayde oneness, but he was just as aware that the moment this indoctrinated phenomena dispersed, he was once again the most separate brother in the group, the only one who didn't enjoy the superior constriction of their brotherhood. As alienated a brother as Ryan himself could in fact be. Anybody who was not in this situation could not possibly imagine the extreme loneliness of being apart from a unity that one is supposedly a forged member of, that has been the center of one's life. And it didn't help that personality tests had long ago diagnosed Davn as the most empathic boy out of them all.

Suddenly, the Jayde's thoughts were bluntly interrupted by the shock of a heavy object colliding with the side of his head. "Hijo de puta, which of you bichinos-" Davn's eyes blazed for a moment until he saw the VR-game headgear laying on the ground, Mika above it, that perpetually mischevious grin alight on his roguish features. "They didn't have this tyte shit in JA or BS," the boy crowed in delight, pulling his own set over his jet black hair and onto his face. "Come on, Jayde, you want to play or not?" It was a fighting game that used VR and force fields to simulate a combat experience... a player got to pick weapons, costume and setting before a robotically enthusiastic voice yelled, "Ready, set, go!" and the opponents could fight it out in a cleared area using their own physical skills and martial arts ability. Davn had selected an Egyptian background and a Zorro-like getup with a long, thin, Spanish rapier for a weapon, while Mika had chosen a ninja-looking garb with nothing to use for defense but his hands. Davn smiled wryly at his brother's confidence. "Dammit, hombre, you tryin' commit suicide or some shit? Or are you tryin' insult me, that be it?" Mika smirked in innocent cockiness and shrugged the comment away. "Eh, brah, I studied this kickass the same way you studied yours at the Academy and the School. It be fair, neh? You gonna keep burnin our gametime?" An art it was, with the both of them. The low stances and lighting fast blows of Mika's karate and tae kwon do served him like a tiger in coil; and Davn could handle that ancient weapon like a savage's dance. Nothing to do with the Formics, these skills- nothing akin to battle in space, most people would say. But why did an IF student's life have to be about those things and them only? To hell with that- Davn was not going to live his days as a mindless pawn for the failed soldiers of yesterday.

As it turned out, neither of the boys won- the time ran out and the veiw cleared back into the Game Arena, allowing sight of Bryo as he stood clapping in approval at the edge of the ring. "Eh, good beatin', my brothas. Who won- I wanna try this shit out. See if I can karate-size this machine in the Jayde way, neh?" Davn handed the boy his own gear and stepped out of the ring, calling lightly past his shoulder as he exited the Game Arena, "Hell to that, hombre. The day you trade in your street-kickass for Mika's game is the day I beat your ass in singin' da crap of those primordial Temptations bitches." He ducked out into the hall with the sounds of Bryo's defiantly garbling voice following him as he went, Mika's voice joining into the echoes as he headed away.

In search of Ryan. Davn didn't know why, but somehow he felt as if his leader had need for a brother at this very moment.

Pallas smirked to herself as the pods finally closed. The display showed the two new fighters, and however cocky these boys looked on the outside they moved like they were very, very green.

She ranged away from Swede enough to draw a bead on them from the side. Swede could dance through fire much better than she could. Pallas was better at threading her way silently below enemy radar to attack. This wasn't the first time they'd teamed up together, and they almost always won.

Antonio's fighter immediately darted forward to engage Swede, but the other fighter didn't follow as she had expected. Maybe he was still working out the controls...but the small adjustments the fighter made told her he was just setting his sensors up. She raised an eyebrow. Most greens immediately dived in and tried to kill anything that moved, like his flashy brother.

Brothers. Those two couldn't possibly have blood ties, but they were Jaydes. She knew enough about the earthside military school to respect that kind of loyalty, but she questioned its merit in this setting. How could loyalty above and beyond the IF strengthen the ranks?

Her thoughts were interrupted as the stationary enemy fighter slowly began to rotate towards her position. Impossible. He couldn't know she was there. The limitations of the scanners didn't allow for it, hidden as she was behind the asteroid obstructions she'd chosen as her cover. Unless he'd tracked her from the beginning and then somehow calculated her current location, there was no possible way. He must be panning to get a better view of the starfield before he joined his brother in the attack on Swede.

The nose of his craft came to a stop as he ceased rotating and slowly began advancing towards her hidden ship.

Startled, Pallas gave ground.

She reversed her fighter's drive, backing silently through the asteroid field, rotating as she went to send her in a graceful curve. Below her vessel she could see the flickers of laser fire as Swede and Tony danced back and forth, chasing each other about. It hadn't taken that Jayde long at all to learn the little fighter, and Swede was beginning to pay for toying with him and giving him the time to figure it out. Swede was still well ahead of him, though...for now. He didn't know all the tricks she'd had time to learn and perfect...but he was picking them up fast.

She returned her gaze to her own opponent and blinked.

He was gone.

"Scata..." she emitted a rare curse in quiet Greek and immediately punched her engines up as high as they would go without overheating. Her ship jerked and blasted away, just in time to avoid the first round of cluster bombs that Kevo sent her way from somewhere above her. Her element of surprise was blown, and her face was grim as she brought her ship around in a graceful arc and fired a combination sally of laser and missile that scored only peripherally as he coasted his fighter to the side, one of his engines beginning to glow a brighter red as the laser shot melted some of its casing. It would slow him down, but not nearly enough, and now he knew how fast her attack was.

His next volley almost took off her sensor array and she was forced to fall back and drop away into the nebula below her.

Nebula fighting was an art that she was still mastering, but she knew more about it than this remarkably precocious Jayde boy. The little shields the fighters employed were useless in a nebula, and the sensors tended to malfunction. Too much interference.

She was just beginning to feel comfortable again when an ominous flare in her rear view made her jet to the side and scan for all she was worth.

Four new ships, shaky in the scanner's reduced nebula display, had just coasted into the starfield. The computer hadn't cleared the request for enemy fighters, and they'd been too busy fighting each other to notice it.

Time to invite the others along.

"It appears we have some unexpected company, gentlemen," she spoke into the headset even as she wheeled her fighter 180 degrees and fled towards the edge of the nebula as the second set of enemy ships came in from above, their lasers barely clearing her exhaust. "I think our personal disagreement might need to be postponed." Swede's cursing was plainly audible as she took in the new information. "Yoo Jaydzee lai dee foock oof til vee zvat deze bugz, neh?"

She blasted out of the cloud then, only her speed allowing her to escape Kevo's waiting laser attack. She didn't bother pausing, just dived down towards Antonio, still merrily chasing Swede. One of her light lasers scored on his side - no real damage, just enough to get his attention. "Did you hear me, Jayde?"

And then the buggers were on them.

There were eight of them, and only four human fighters, two of which were relatively green. The AI that ran these was relatively intelligent, too, and their weaponry was comparable.

They crushed them anyway.

Tony's fighting ability was very similar to Swede's. He took ridiculous chances and came away practically unscathed most of the time. Kevo was proving to be nearly as adept as she was at laying traps and cutting the enemy to pieces in hiding, and together they took out three of them with one double set of cluster bombs.

They killed the last pair of buggers as a group, Swede and Antonio leading them and Kevo and Pallas slitting their throats from behind.

The last enemy cleared, and the pods unlocked and opened. Her eyes glittering with the thrill of victorious battle, Pallas climbed out of the pod in time to high-five Swede and then turned to face their allies.

Seeing that both girls had underestimated the skills of the two "greens" with whom they just had agreed to battle with, Kevo despite himself had begun to get cocky. Well, most Jaydes were predisposed to do so. These females were remarkably skilled; they juiced their superior experience and advantage with no mercy at all- he and Tony were riding rough at the start; they suddenly found themselves wishing that the rest of their brothers were fighting at their side. But it had been in their unspoken understanding from the moment they proposed the game that "this one would be mine- you take can care of that one. C'mon, brah, let's make them dance." They were quick learners; they didn't become Jaydes and make it to Command School just to be beaten in an insignificant simgame by a couple of girls. Even if those girls happened to be brilliant, and beautiful... and the surprise of her agile mind and tactical genius had been distracting him the whole damn time...

When the unaccented female voice suddenly announced over his headset that another enemy was approaching, Kevo's blood hit a state of ecstasized intensity and eyes burned bright with the exhilaration of dangerous combat. He flipped open the connection to the other pods' earpieces only to find that Tony had beaten him to it- "Eh, donnas, you don't fly half so bad for a couple of ladies who are too pretty to be breakin' their nails on the joysticks, neh?" The Swedish accent answered coyly into the headpiece; Tony could feel the slap of a hand in that girl's voice. "Yoo Jaydzee lai dee foock oof til vee zvat deze bugz, neh?" His brow rising, the Jayde restricted his headset connection to just himself and Kevo long enough to ask, "What the fuck did that bitch just say?" Laughing lightly, Kevo replied that he hadn't the slightest damn idea. Tony switched back and listened for anything else the swedechick might say. He sure as hell couldn't understand her, but something about that voice was just so goddamn sexy...

The four of them worked together. Tony and Kevo Jayde worked together with two pubescent females to beat out the computer NPC buggers... it was like Jayde-heresy. Ryan could have had their asses for this. But when the pods lifted their covers and Tony caught sight of the blonde one's breasts bouncing as she slapped winners' hands with her friend, he couldn't have given the slightest damn. He leapt deftly out of his cockpit and strolled over to her, an arm placed slickly around her waist before she could stop it, and he put his lips up to her ear, whispering, "Talk to me again, baby. Say anything; let me hear that sexy voice one last time."

For a moment, Kevo watched his brother's maneuvers in amazed amusement before stepping out of own his pod and making his way over to that goddess of girl with the shine of conquest lighting her eyes. Some of that same shine must still remain in his own, Kevo knew, but his face was once again its usual calm as he approached her. He gave no indication of sexual interest at all, he hoped- as he gazed at her frankly asked simply, "What's your name?"

Damn. Now that had been a battle.

Practically throwing herself from the pod, Swede grinned widely, slapping Pallas's hand in triumph. They'd fought together for months in Griffin, had played the sim endlessly in battle, but this little tussle with those two Jayde boys eclipsed all that. Her turquoise eyes were shining victoriously up until the moment Tony slid his arm around her waist and begin to whisper into her ear.

Swede gave no indication that his presence annoyed her, finding oddly that his cocky attitude was more amusing than irritating. And while her glance toward Pallas told the other girl exactly what she thought of this handsome, arrogant flyboy, she just turned to flutter her eyelashes at him again flirtatiously. Laying a hand on his chest, she shoved him away suddenly and smiled coyly at him, flicking the spikes from her eyes carelessly as she winked.

"Bettaire vatch eet, zveethot, doon't vanna geet too cockee... yoor luckee dat vee letcha vin, eh, Pallaz? I ztill tink vee need to teech deze two boyz whooz da hotzhotz aroond here..." The other boy was watching Pallas carefully, and Swede raised an eyebrow at her friend before leaning gracefully against the pod and smirking.

Pallas returned Swede's grin. She'd been amused when Antonio put his arm around Swede and had winced internally for his sake, but Swede had been surprisingly gentle, despite the look of smirking disdain she'd shared with Pallas.

"What's your name?"

The smooth, almost hypnotic voice pulled her head around to meet the gaze of the other Jayde boy...Kevo, his brother had called him. The depth in those brown eyes was spell-binding. He was quieter than his brother, and the intensity she sensed beneath the surface made her smile despite herself, captivated.

"Pallas," she said after a slight pause. "You're Kevo? You fly remarkably well for a beginner." Or anyone else, she added silently. "You almost had me twice, before the buggers showed up."

Kevo let a smile flicker on his lips for the briefest moment. "Thank you," he replied, never once releasing his eyes from this girl's endless gaze. "I don't think I have to tell you how skilled you are at your own fighter." He paused a second, fighting not to laugh as Tony was shoved away by the other girl who was practically shoving a finger down her throat. "Pallas. Pallas Athena." Kevo shook his head, disbelieving his own ears. "I'm sorry. It's just- I can't think of anything more fitting."

Ah, Dio, that voice... Tony was grinning like a drunk idiot, hardly noticing that the girl had actually pushed him away. Relentlessly, he sidled up to her again, reaching up with a practiced hand to caress her soft cheek. From this view so close, he could see all the curves of her body, all her rises and sets... and aw damn, that ass... "Tell me your name, donna, and I'll let you win whenever you like."

And now was about the time that Swede was beginning to lose her patience. Tony, so far, had been relatively lucky. He'd lasted more than a half an hour in her presence, and all she'd done was slap him lightly and push him away. But his little comment about letting her win rankled at Swede's own arrogance, and knocking his hand away from her cheek, her turquoise eyes narrowed dangerously.

"I eem Zvede... end eef yoo tink yoo hafta let me vin, den letz joozt zay eetz been nize knoweeng yoo, dahlink. Coomon Pallaz, vanna get a dreenk? Vee can let deze boyz cool oof a bit, vat zay yoo?" Swede motioned for the doorway, brushing past Tony as she sauntered a few steps and then glanced back, eyes running coolly over him before she raised an eyebrow and glanced to Pallas. "Pallaz?"

The boy knew her name.

Pallas struggled to keep her smile small, controlled, but her eyes warmed a little despite her best efforts. No one at the battleschool had ever shown any recognition of the nickname she carried, and now this Jayde veg from god-knows-where had named her without even blinking.

"Thank you," she managed, her voice calm, but a tell-tale blush crept up and stained her cheeks a pale dusky rose.

Swede's voice brought back her control, and as she turned to respond her blush was nearly gone. "What? Oh. Of course." She looked back at Kevo, her eyes still a little warm as she fell back into her usual reserved cool manner. "Nice meeting you, Kevo. We'll see you around, neh?" It would be a tactical mistake to show too much interest this early in the opening. She would wait until she learned more about him first. The Jaydes were notoriously violent and closed to outside influence. There was no point in making a fool of herself.

She turned away, calculating the number of steps - two - before she turned back slowly, as if
a thought was just occurring to her. "If you're free after dinner tonight, I'll be here practicing. We could try a few of the simulations." She didn't leave a question in her tone. It was only a statement, an off-hand suggestion, and she turned and followed Swede out of the Game Arena.

"Psshhh."

Tony watched Swede and Pallas leave with injured disgust written deep into his dark features. He strode over to Kevo, a few strands of wavy black hair falling onto his face as he shook his head. "Zveede. What kind of shitassed name is that? Fuck, it sounds like something I could smoke. Hell, I am gonna smoke that bitch, don't make any mistake of that, brah."

But Kevo hardly heard him. He answered with an offhand, "Yeah. Sure brah, good luck." and wandered idly away to watch Bryo and Mika have at it with the VR game. After dinner...

Helen rushed into the game room, almost taking out a few people as she stumbled in, Castor right behind her. She grabbed his wrist and pulled him to the sims. She hopped in one, the adrenaline rushing, eager to fight with Castor again. They'd played the sims yesterday, but she couldn't get enough, trying to catch up for all that time that they were seperated. She pulled on the headset and waited for the click that told her that Cas had turned on his. "Ready to play hotstuff?" She could bearly keep from shaking from excitement....this morning she'd tried imagining that he was playing but it wasn't the same as actually teaming up with him.

Still holding Mode's hand tightly as she tugged him into the game arena, Kat paused suddenly in the doorway, and he bumped into her from behind. Her pupils slitted dangerously in the dim, flashing lights causing her to take a step away, finding only Mode pressed against her back as she tried to hide near him again. So many lights...

"Mode...." she said uncertainly, slightly more anxious when she noticed a few more Jayde boys sparring at a VR ring. They were everywhere, and Ryan couldn't be far away. At least... at least Mode was with her, which lent her some form of reassurance. But not much. Turning to look up at him, she bit her lip, eyes still wandering around.

Mode looked around the Game Arena. Games, predictably, and simulator pods against the far wall. There weren't too many soldiers in here yet. Another pair of Jaydes, but Kat didn't look half so interested in these. She looked uncomfortable, and a gentle impulse he didn't really understand or appreciate made him draw her in for a hug.

"You ok, Kitten?" he asked, only half the taunt in his voice that he'd wanted. Her cage shakes had returned, and he stroked her back soothingly as he looked around the place for somewhere she might be more comfortable.

"No," she answered, voice muffled as she briefly buried her face into his chest. But his sudden gentleness was just as disturbing as thoughts of Ryan, and so Kat pulled away, still holding his hand as she turned to watch the other soldiers warily. Just sensory overload, she told herself sternly. Stuck in a cage for that long will do it to you. Ryan's not here. Stop acting like some scared little kitten or Mode will take advantage of it.

Smiling up at him with a confidence she didn't quite feel, Kat tugged him toward the far end of the room, to a fighting simulation game. Placing her little hands on the controls, she tilted her head and smirked. "I'll beat you. Fight me."
