Even Nic fell quiet, walking more solemnly as he entered the vast library of Command School. Bookcases stretched to the ceiling, real books and not just discs to view on the desks. Had to be thousands of military texts, philosophy dissertations, all manner of extremely boring reading material that he'd never bothered to look at. But it was pretty quiet in here, and he relished the hushed manner of the place.

Strolling over to his favorite nook, a little hidden corner with a couch nearly invisible to others, Nic settled in and logged onto his desk, fingers tapping idly along the display. Wick... there hadn't been any matches in the system, obviously, as it was just a nickname. But he'd been scanning the lists of new recruits, trying to match her description to a name. Black hair, blue eyes... there were a few names listed, and he sighed with frustration.

Squinting in the semi-gloom of his hiding spot, Nic continued to scroll through the records, searching.

Wick entered the Library. It looked even more massive in person than it had on the map screen.

The room was huge, and filled with rows and rows of bookshelves. Real books as well as discs took up the space here. Impressive, she thought with a smirk, and very, very flammable.

Grinning to herself, her mood somewhat restored superficially, she decided to give herself a walking tour. The weapons standards would be in the periodicals at the back, anyway.

Slightly irritated at the sound of footsteps approaching his quiet retreat, Nic pushed himself up from the couch and leaned around the bookcase. His bright blue eyes widened just a little in surprise and predatory excitement as Wick strolled by, not spotting him. With a quick movement, he grabbed her wrist and pulled her off balance, smiling as she flopped surprised onto the couch. Grinning cockily, he slid in beside her, resting his arm across the sofaback and sighing in contentment.

"Ahh, Wick, like my little hiding place? Perfect time to settle in for a nice relaxing conversation, doncha think? Don't be so tense, sweetheart, sit for a while and talk to me, eh?"

Wick winced as she hit the couch. Glaring at Nicolai, she refrained from hitting him by the narrowest of margins. "Didn't we have this discussion earlier today?" she practically growled at him. His persistence surprised her. She had expected him to leave her alone after she publicly humiliated him in the Game Arena.

He continued to simper at her, and she set her teeth. "What do you want?"

Nicolai ignored her obvious anger and stretched lazily, raising an eyebrow at her as he smiled disarmingly. "Oh, don't be so modest, beautiful..." He leaned in daringly and whispered in her ear. "I only want you."

Then he stood suddenly, holding out a hand to her politely. "Care to take a tour of the library with me? I know you're new, but it's about time you get acquainted with this asteroid. Do say you'll join me."

No less angry, Wick looked the boy over.

Earlier today he'd tried to drag her out of the Game Arena "for a drink", and she'd punished him for it. She'd instructed him (quite clearly, she thought) never to touch her again, but he obviously didn't take her seriously. The next time it happened, he was going to regret it.

But for now, she was still bitter and confused over Jor, and wasn't really in the mood to deal with this guy. She rose from the couch without a word, cold eyes looking at his and then away, brushing her collar back into place.

Her collar slipped just slightly, revealing a dark purple bruise that stood out in stark contrast to her pale milky skin. Nicolai frowned, feigning concern even as he cursed to himself angrily. Someone had gotten to Wick first... and on her first day, no less. Perhaps the motives behind her withdrawn attitude was another boy. Perhaps it was that Jor, from the game arena; he'd noticed the jealous angry glances between the two, the tension. Very well. Nicolai could care less about that; he'd stolen his share of girls form other soldiers, and to date, no one had dared to contradict him. Jor probably would not be any different.

But he continued to look at her with worry in his eyes, touching her lightly on the arm. "You okay, Wick? That bruise looks nasty, don't tell me someone hit a cute little girl like you..."

Wick studied him, ice-blue eyes holding his, even as she moved her arm away from his touch. "No one ever hits girls like me," she said, and a wicked half smile touched her mouth for a moment and then was gone. Something about the set of his features didn't quite fit in with the concerned facade, something about the way his mouth quirked just the tiniest bit, as if he were trying not to laugh.

She flicked her eyes back up to his and then turned away again, heading for the exit. Maybe the Quad wouldn't be so bad.

At least he'd won a smile, even if it was a smirk. And that was a start.

Nic watched Wick leave, his eyes following her tense, almost awkward gait. That was odd, but he dismissed it from his thoughts, a grin flickering across his face as he dropped his gaze to his desk. Logging off, he hefted himself from the couch and walked quietly from the library, intent on returning to his barracks and somehow finding more about this girl.

With quiet steps Jor trudged into the library, looking around with awe in his eyes at the vast array of books. He hadn't seen anything near this huge since he'd been at home, but those had been all boring legal texts and court documents and everything else that signified his parent's obsession with fighting. Shaking that thought from his head, he stalked around a corner, surprised to find a little nook with a couch centered inside, the light dim. Perfect.

Tossing himself onto the sofa, Jor closed his eyes and tried to relax, relishing the silent solitude.

Wick stepped into the Library for the second time. She knew it wasn't very likely, but it was the first major place near the bathrooms she'd left, and she didn't want to risk missing him.

The place was dead silent, and she was grateful for the carpet that muted her booted footsteps. She stopped walking for a moment when she saw Jor, his eyes closed, and then walked around behind the couch, knelt down on the carpet behind him, and placed her fingertips gently against the bruise she'd given him high on his cheek to distract him as she slid the other under his chin, fingers slipping into the old pressure points easily. She didn't push, though. Being this close to him after their terrifying hours of angry separation had made her weak. She didn't want to hurt him...but she wanted his undivided attention for what she had to say.

Jor didn't even have to open his eyes to know who held their fingers threateningly under his chin, and so he didn't, remaining relaxed even as his heart began to pound wildly. There was only one person who'd dare to hold him like this, be so close without fear.

Wick. It had to be her.

Sighing, Jor whispered. "Hi, Spark."

Wick's heart fluttered. He didn't struggle, didn't even move, just whispered greeting. His easy relinquishing of control made her bite her lip almost hard enough to leave a mark, but she pushed it away, leaned in to whisper, her free hand stroking his cheek lightly, her head resting on the edge of the back of the couch, mouth against his ear.

"You hurt me this morning, match." She kissed his ear, her breath rushing in between her whispers. "You left me bleeding. You haven't done that in months...did it feel good to get it out?" She moved her mouth against his ear as she moved her body around the side of the couch, crawled into his lap and coiled, her free hand now lazily beginning to drag the zipper of his uniform down from under his chin.

"You hurt me...and I don't care." Her tone went from silken to husky. She turned to face him and dropped her hands from his throat, looked down at his face and then kissed him tenderly before she embraced him tightly, burying her face in his neck. "I love you, Jordan..." she whispered as she pushed herself against him. "Please don't be angry with me."

He almost didn't believe what was happening, having prepared himself so much for her rejection. Yet Wick was now curled in his lap, her face buried into his neck as she whispered to him. Jor finally blinked in comprehension, wrapped his arms around her lightly and rested his lips against the top of her crown, sighing softly.

"I'm not angry, Wick, believe me, okay?" Jor pushed her away gently until she looked up at him, and his jade eyes softened at her worry. He had been angry, had been confused and hurt and terrified and enraged and all manners of things before. But like always, no matter how badly they fought or what happened, he couldn't help but forgive her.

Kissing her gently, his lips twitched downward, and he lowered his gaze away from hers. "I didn't want to hurt you, I just thought..." Jor trailed off, then steeled himself and continued. "I love you too, my Spark." He smiled then, a little wicked grin as he lifted her chin with one finger, nipping at her neck with an outrush of air.

His breath against her throat as her relief flooded through her tore a little sound from her throat, a tiny whimper of release. She held Jor's lips to her throat, tangling her fingers in his shining dark curls as his strong arms held her to him. She pressed herself against him and pulled his face away from her neck, kissed him hard, bruising his lips. Her hands fell to his belt buckle and she stopped, breathing hard, and met his eyes with her own. She wanted him, but not here, not where they could be caught.

She slid off his lap to the floor and yanked him to his feet, pulling him towards the door. She wouldn't lose him, not for a trifling matter of location. That she could fix. She dragged him out the door and towards the barracks.

Mode's smile disappeared the moment he left the Commons, and by the time he'd guided Kat into the Library, he was brooding. He let his hand fall away from Kat's back, looking her over without really focusing.

The way her little hands were clenching and unclenching made him study her more closely, and his own thoughts were muted as he saw how tense she was, even for her. Her wide malicious grin seemed more like a grimace, and her green-gold eyes were dangerously narrow. She seemed fidgety, turning her head this way and that too often to look entirely natural, like she was trying to keep an eye on everything at once.

She hadn't been kidding about the walks.

For her to get this bad, they must have kept her shut away for a long, long time. The low-ceilinged hallways and rooms they kept them in had been depressing to him, but not scarring.

But she'd been there a lot longer than he had.

His slate eyes softened to a silvery grey as her nervous eyes met his, but he said nothing to indicate that he observed her weakness.

The sudden shift from complete captivity to complete freedom was more than a little overwhelming, and Kat's pupils slitted with predatory calculation as Mode led her into the quiet library. Even without the throngs of people surrounding her, the wariness remained, her gaze shifting rapidly around her as she stalked beside him, muscles tensed as if ready to pounce. The veiled concern in Mode's eyes as he glanced down at her did not go unnoted, but Kat's slight gratefulness was hidden as she clenched her fingers.

They finally reached a secluded corner, a couch hidden in dim light, and her features hardened as she glanced inside, flicking her gaze across the room, scanning for anything she might deem dangerous. But Mode seemed relaxed, and Kat knew him well enough to know he didn't feel threatened. Why was she?

She climbed onto the couch, curling in the corner after checking behind the sofa and all around the little nook. With a guarded smirk toward Mode, Kat dug her nails into the armrest discreetly and tried to calm herself.

Eight years, and she was finally let out of her cage. Kat almost didn't know what to do anymore.

She was pacing now. He doubted she realized it, but it was beginning to get a little unnerving. It was time to make a point.

He darted his hand out and tapped her back, just below her ribs. She practically levitated, her entire body turning, red-gold curls flying as she spun and bared her teeth at him. She even let out a tiny hiss of surprise.

"You're pretty twitchy," he said mildly, the slight dip of his eyebrows belying the indifference of his tone. "How long were you in there, Kitten? You've got cage shakes enough for an army."

Kat had hoped she had her wary nervousness under control, feeling mildly more secure when Mode caught her by surprise, tapping her on the back. She spun, hissing at him, her instinct to fight kicking in before she realized he was merely trying to draw her notice to her unnerved behavior. But it was his quiet question that threw her off, and Kat's eyes narrowed dangerously at Mode as she feigned a careless grin, her voice strained but nonchalant.

"I told you already, sweetheart. Since I was eight..." Her tone shifted, becoming bitter and hard as Kat looked away, not wanting Mode to read the expression in her eyes. He'd only been at the Institute two years... two long years, he thought. Kat shook her head quietly to herself, a glint of anger in her gaze. Two years. Mode had no idea.

But his slightly taken-aback attitude caused her to turn back on him again, a malicious smile flicking across her lips as her green-gold eyes sharpened. "You thought it was only rumors, didn't you? I know what the others said about me, I've heard all the stories. You... you were only in that place for two years, Mode. I was there for eight." Kat slid from the couch and stood, peering around the corner with silent wariness, watching the few other soldiers in the library. "Eight..." she whispered. "Eight."

So she had been telling the truth when he'd asked, all those years ago. Eight? How does an eight-year-old get shipped to the Institute? What could she possibly have done?

He studied her impassively, forcing himself to be calm, detached. She was his Cellmate for the next few years at least. There were a few things he needed to know. If she'd killed someone in BattleSchool, they would have iced her for real...so it must have been something not quite as bad, but almost.

There were rumors of her killing a boy after she'd arrived...but those didn't concern him nearly so much. With the clientele in the Institute, it was an accepted necessity that you had to defend yourself by any force necessary. It was what she'd done before that that he wanted to know.

He considered being artful about it, and then shrugged and asked directly.

"What did you do, Kat? Why would they ice an eight-year-old?" He kept his voice soft, unthreatening, but his eyes had solidified to slate once again.

Turning slowly to face Mode again as he sat on the couch, his flat slate eyes watching her with carefully-concealed wariness, Kat lowered her head and looked up at him playfully, almost threatening in her quiet demeanor. A long copper curl fell across her face as she smiled disarmingly at him, green eyes glinting. She was so overtly innocent that the coiled rage behind her mask was that much more evident.

"You can't play all coy with me, Mode..." Kat purred huskily, her eyes watching him sharply as she sauntered toward him slowly and climbed back onto the couch beside him, smirking wider as he tensed instinctively. "Sandre at the Institute told you, I overheard him... ahh yes, you think I miss all those conversations you had? Have to keep on your toes when you're a little girl like me, Mode, or else trouble finds you first."

She sat back suddenly, laying her arm across the seat back as she crossed her legs and placed her feet in his lap, leaning against the armrest. Kat raised an eyebrow at him, a satisfied glow in her gaze. "My two friends had to take a nice extended vacation in the infirmary. Of course, it wasn't my fault, remember? They thought they could gang up on me... tsk tsk." She shook her head and sighed to herself. "Not a very smart thing to do..."

He pursed his lips in surprise. You had to be careful around Sandre. He had a tendency to stop in midsentence and run off. He was a paranoid schizophrenic, but he had eiditic recall, and if you could get him to stand still and talk to you long enough, he could tell you about almost any kid who'd ever been through there.

And Kat had overheard their conversation?? He knew she was a quiet mover...but that was phenomenal. Sandre practically had second sight.

"So you beat two little launchies up, all by yourself?" he said, his tone lightly caustic, but his eyes still slightly wary and a little curious.

"Oh, well J-bear helped me," she said nonchalantly, tilting her head as she watched him. "But he can't tell you about our adventure anymore." Kat sighed again melodramatically, stretching languidly with a smirk. Stupid, blind Jax. Thought that she would actually follow their little alliance... a flicker of taunting laughter flashed in her eyes. They'd been shipped home for a day to see her father before she was taken to the Institute. One day; and it was the perfect opportunity. Jax and Zion never knew what hit them.

Of course, Mode knew nothing of that. Neither did the IF Marines who came to drag her away once again, who locked her up in that hellhole for eight Godforsaken years. Kat was sure that she might have remained there forever if someone had discovered what she'd done. But the question remained now: tell Mode or not? She wasn't entirely sure she could trust him, yet she did, as much as she was capable of. Kat's lips quirked to the side as she thought.

"Since we're playing twenty questions, darling, there anything else that I didn't do that you wanna hear about?"

Mode frowned. He didn't like her feet in his lap, didn't like the mercurial moodswing she was on. If he was going to have to live in close proximity with this girl he had to learn everything he could about her, and the way she was now the only way he was going to get it would be through direct questioning.

"What happened to Jax?" It was simple, straightforward, and he held her eyes firmly with his own, giving nothing away.

Kat shifted, twisting as she leaned her head back, closing her eyes with a purr. An idle hand reached up to her slender throat, fingers intertwined with the delicate gold necklace she wore, and she swung Jax's ring by its chain, tauntingly, mockingly.

"Hmmmm, no one knows, he just... disappeared." She opened her eyes and smiled at Mode, making a little exploding motion with her fingertips. "Capoot. BOOM. Just like Zion and the rest." Kat resettled again, lounging lazily against the couch, absentmindedly playing with the little souvenier. "Why are you so interested all of a sudden, Asmodeus?"

Surprisingly, her answer made him relax a little. He had no doubt that she'd done something awful to her little friend Jax, but that didn't really interest him. That she as much as admitted it to him did. He rested a hand on the toe of one her boots, casually, fingertips draping over the black leather.

"You just been so friendly since we met this morning, Kat. I thought maybe since we'd be rooming together and all, it was a good idea to find out what had happened to your other little friends." He smirked at her, drumming his fingertips lightly on the boot.

Kat couldn't refrain from smirking in return as she swung her legs from his lap, knocking his hand aside as she did so. Pushing herself standing, she leaned over slightly, enough to place Mode at her eye level. His slate gaze focused on her green-gold one, and with a light pat to his cheek, she shook her head and tossed her curls over her shoulder.

"Oh, but I like you, handsome... there's a difference there." Kat winked cockily at Mode, a faint trace of truth making her tense. She never was very good at being honest; for lying came easier than anything else. "Don't worry... I don't bite." Baring her canines at him in a smile, Kat turned to leave. "Let's go. You're slacking on your tour guide duties, Mode."

Mode grinned back, his wariness lifting a little. He hadn't missed the tiny fringe of sincerity in her voice, and it decided that until she gave him specific reason to worry, he wouldn't. She was pleasant to look at, and she would keep Dante at a distance. He needed to be free of distractions so he could deal with Wick.

Wick. His grin turned meaner, his eyes hardening into diamond. He remembered the look of numb disbelief on her face as Jor dragged her away. Her face would look a lot worse when he was done.

"My apologies, Katera. I still haven't shown you the Game Arena...but I'm a little...hungry. Why don't we stop for dinner? They probably don't even put sedatives in it." He stood, tugged on one of her red curls as he passed her by and walked out the door.

Helen skidded to a halt, nearly slipping on the floor, when she saw the door to the library. She had been almost even with Castor by the time the got there, so her sudden stop was not unnoticed.

She walked in, panting, and gazed at the bookcases... with books. She walked up to one and gently pulled it our flipping through it and then returning it. She strolled back and forth gazing at the texts in front of her. She'd gotten into her studies when Castor graduated, a way to keep her mind off of him... but she didn't need that now, she had him back... or at least she hoped she did. But the books in front of her made her smile anyway. She'd never be able to read all of them, especially if she spent time in the sims with Castor like she wanted to, but it was nice to know that they were there if she needed them. She looked back at Castor, who had followed her in. "I didn't know there were so many..." Her teachers back in England had talked about books, although she'd never actualy seen one since all of the ones that they had were on disks... but they were beautiful...

He watched her admire the books while he caught his breath. "Aren't they great?" he asked finally, grinning at her. "This place is awesome. Lots and lots to read...OH!" He grabbed her hand and tugged her through several rows, and finally stopped and pulled a book from the shelf, barely looking at the binding. "Check this out! It's a manual for the old fighter sim they had at BattleSchool we used to play."

Helen gazed at the book that Castor had pulled out. And didn't understand hardly any of it. Technical drawings weren't exactly her strong point. She understood the numbers and writing and charts, but the diagrams lost her. She smiled at him, afraid that he would not understanding as disinterest. "Oh yeah, we still need to go to the sims... come on... " She nudged him... "Race ya!" She sprinted to the door, quickly made sure that there was no one wandering by and ran out.

Castor grinned after her, pausing long enough to put the book back on the shelf before he darted out into the corridor after her - and almost ran into Sasha. His commander looked startled, and then glared at him. "Uh, sorry, sir." he said sheepishly as Sasha fixed his glance on Helen's disappearing back, and then back to him. "Watch where you're going," Sasha said irritably, but smirked as he turned away, heading into the library. Not like that at all, he'd said. Right.

Castor blinked, flushed in embarrassment and hurried to catch up with Helen as she entered the Game Arena.

Don came into the Library with his brother on his heels and lounged to the side on a couch to toy with the idea of doing homework on his desk while his brother logged into the large terminals that were part of the main network.

Dom had always been more adept at sifting through computer systems. Their abilities, like everything else about them, were almost exactly equal across the board, but Dom enjoyed moving through the drifts of data much more than he did, and that made the difference. He knew the stacks better than Don did, anyway.

"Wonder what ever happened to that Terrence fellow," he murmured quietly. Dom would include that in his search, he was sure...that, and anything else in her disciplinary folder or medical records.

"We'll just have to see, now won't we?" Dom settled into his chair before the computer terminal, already working his way through the school mainframe as Don lounged on the couch and played with his desk. It wasn't too difficult to bypass the relatively simple security system that guarded the most basic soldier records and files. He sifted through these first, like he had in the observatory, not finding much information he hadn't already seen. But now, as he took his time to actually read those files, he frowned to himself as he tapped his fingers idly against the display.

Her personal profile was relatively unremarkable, but it was her disciplinary record that caught his interest. Anjélice Iddantel, six-month commander of Fox Army. Promoted from Toon A Leader in Panther Army following an altercation with fellow toon leader Jordan Windhaven, who was later transferred to Fox. An unconfirmed report of a "personal relationship" with... "Uh, Don? I think you need to see this. Check your mail."

Dom clicked the send icon, transferring all the medical files and disciplinary records he'd managed to unearth through his little search. "You know that Nathan Terrence? He was sent to the Charybdis Institute. And Don-- he's here. Look at what I sent you."

Don pulled up his e-mail quickly and looked over the information his brother had uncovered.

Nathan Terrence, iced for attacking his commander, Anjelice Iddantel, and her Toon Leader, Ariadne Ivemey. Only they hadn't iced him, they'd sent him to the Charybdis Institute...and he'd been reinstated, arriving at Command School three days ago. Since then, he'd been arrested once on suspicion of assault, but quickly released when the testimony of the assaulted was revoked.

Three days. Don would have given a lot just then to know what Dante's eyes had looked like before Nathan had re-appeared.

He couldn't find much on Nathan's suspected victim. A few disciplinary records from BattleSchool...wait. He transferred files to his brother. "Now this is interesting. It says here that our Nathan was defending his commander. Interesting changeover." The girl had seemed bitter, not frightened. Another thought brushed his mind, and he looked up to meet Dom's gaze. "Lovers?" their voices asked in unison before each looked back to his screen.

Over the course of Dante's first day as commander, she'd been attacked by her former fellow toon leader, Jordan Windhaven, and by another one of her soldiers, Moira Callenstrom. Don had drawn his attention to an interesting point-- Nathan was commended for defending her, and although she was taken to the infirmary with a few cracked ribs, she recovered nonetheless. Until two days later...

When he attacked her and Ariadne without provocation. The medical report was pretty gruesome, and Dom managed to draw up Ivemey's report too, reading them both over with a slight frown on his face. Her broken ribs had punctured her chest, the rest of her body beaten bloody. Ivemey suffered internal bleeding, both of them having to undergo surgery. No wonder she just stared at him with that glacier shield surrounding her, eyes cold and quicksilver. He almost didn't want to know, and she'd been right.

"I don't... think so. Something does not give me that impression. Close, I would guess; very close. You find anything else, Don? This information about Windhaven and Callenstrom is rather interesting. Looks as if they are both enrolled here too. I think we've found ourselves in the middle of something rather... complicated." Dom continued to search, now scanning Callenstrom's most recent infirmary report. Beaten... burned. If Nathan was responsible, this could definitely be more than either of them bargained for. Glancing up at Don in synchronized worry, they met eyes, and only Dom's reserve kept him from asking the unspoken question. What are we going to do now?

Don met his brother's gaze with understanding, thinking quickly, but eventually his seriousness melted into a small smile.

"Girls love to be saved."

They'd learned that early on. Don had rescued a girl from an overzealous soldier attempting to force what she gave to him in thanks later that evening. Dom's turn had gone just as easily; if they'd wanted to experiment with "long-term" relationship, the girl would have been amenable. As it was, if they were low on targets, she was almost always understanding.

Perhaps this Nathan would be the key to Dante.

Dom grinned in return. "They certainly do. You think that...? Oh. I wonder if she knows Dante."

Struck with sudden inspiration, he began to type frantically, quickly digging into the quad records. Dante was in Phoenix... with Nicolai. Ugh. No matter; the boy was insignificant at this point. What Dom wanted was a tie, some sort of link between their favorite girl and their new target. He found it three minutes later, by process of elimination.

Griffin Quad, Cell A. Roxinna Natano, bunking with.... Ariadne Ivemey. Dante's friend. Dom knew that Rox and Nicolai were friends... had been more, or so he'd heard. But their crowds definitely intermingled, meaning that Rox must know Dante. Perfect.

He looked up to smile smugly at his brother. "She knows her. I'm going to pay a little visit. Care to accompany me?" Don shook his head in negation, patting his desk. "You're up, bro. Have fun." He winked, and Dom returned the cocky gesture before logging out of the main computer, standing to straighten his uniform and brush his spiked hair from his eyes. "I'll meet you here in an hour." With that, he was up and out the door, leaving Don grinning behind him.

Donovan was bored.

The Library was impressive at first sight, but held very little of his interest that he hadn't already read. Tactical accounts were mostly locked down; the ones he'd managed to prize out of the secured databases were always the most interesting, and he could get those most easily on his own desk.

He locked his desk closed and stood up. Dom would be a while with Roxy. He grinned to himself; Rox could (and had, on occasion) wear them both out. Dom would probably be pretty useless when he came back anyway. And he could always check his email later.

Intent on finding something to do, Don trotted out of the Library, thinking of the girl with the fire in her hair and the ice in her eyes.

Helen walked into the library still clutching onto Castor, Nathan's glare haunting her vision. Of all the things that she could have gone without from battle school... the fights would be at the top of the list. She was fooling herself, how could she have even begun to think that there wouldn't be fights here...

She glanced up at Castor. Everythings going to be fine...Cas is here. Nothings going to happen...everything is going to be fine...

She let go of him and took a step away glancing around. It was so quiet... "Cas.." she turned around to face him, "What.... what happened to Nathan? He.. I don't know... I'm probably imagining things." Imagined? No, how could I have imagined that look in those eyes? The look of a fallen angel. A demon...He's different than he was at battleschool... I couldn't have been imagining it...

Different location, same hiding spot, it seemed. Dante beelined for the little nook Nicolai had first taken her to, the couch hidden within an alcove of bookshelves. It had always been a safe place for her to retreat to, and he'd taken there quite a bit when she'd first arrived, when he'd first tried to break past her shield and find her warmth. Hadn't worked, and eventually he'd given up, the nook becoming their meeting spot, when they wanted to relax and just talk.

And so she found herself retreating there once more, stalking past the few soldiers in the library, and crawled onto her sofa. Settling against the cushions, she reached up to grab a random book from the shelf, flipping idly through the pages. Her eyes were unfocused, soft silver, and the words on the page became blurred as she stared absentmindedly, breathing softly as she thought.

Wick needed to die. Nathan... he did, but she didn't want him to. She wouldn't kill him... but found herself knowing that if the opportunity came, she might not even have the strength to stop them. Passivity, and he would be gone, not by her hand. What a weak way to achieve revenge. Dante sighed, playing with her curls as she tried to refocus and found she couldn't.

She didn't even notice the approaching footsteps and presence that paused in front of her sanctuary.

Dominic was not in the Library.

He hadn't been in the barracks either. He was about to leave, to check the mess hall, when he spotted Dante sitting on a couch near the very back, tugging at one of her curls absently as she sat, her eyes blank, expression icy. He felt a surge of anger at her, followed by one of uncertainty. He was angry with her for threatening his equilibrium, for making him feel as if he couldn't talk to his brother, a close a man to himself as there ever would be.

But he had approached her, not vice-versa. She had warned him to leave her alone. He hadn't, and this was the price. Maybe she could answer his questions, if he could figure out what to ask. Either way, he couldn't talk about this to Dominic, not yet.

He came to a stop in front her couch before either of them realized he was walking towards her, and her quicksilver eyes looked up at him in cold surprise. "Dante..." he started, and then shrugged at sat down next to her, his indigo eyes holding hers.

"You're welcome."

Donovan.

She glanced up as he paused before her, unable to hide the flash of surprise as his midnight eyes locked with hers and he slid into the seat beside her. Her silver eyes held a hint of uncertainty, even more surprise evident at his words. She shifted slightly on the couch to face him, paling instead of flushing as comprehension began to dawn.

You're welcome. It took a long moment for his words to register, another moment for her to understand what he was referring to. She'd thanked him for coming to her assistance, back when they were seated together in the observatory, and she'd fled before he could respond. And yet, here he was, seated next to her with those indigo eyes watching her intently.

A slight blush crept to her cheeks then, and she was forced to glance away, tilting her chin down to obscure her hesitancy behind her fiery veil. Her eyes fell to the book in her lap, bruised hands resting on the pages, and glacier calm melted slowly as she glanced back up into his face, silvery-violet gaze meeting his. She started to speak, found she couldn't, and paled again as she bit her lip and averted her eyes, uncertainty claiming her once again.

She was flustered, but he was far too uncertain of what exactly he was doing to capitalize on it as he would have in the past.

"Dante...I...need to talk to you." The Library suddenly felt entirely too confining as he realized exactly what it was he intended to tell her. His pulse quickened, and his fingers tightened on the armrest as he hung onto her gaze like a lifeline. "Will you come with me? I don't want to talk about it here."

His gaze was so intense that Dante found herself unable to look away, merely nodded as she placed the book back onto the shelf, not even noticing that she was moving until he'd stood and she followed. He was visibly tense, shoulders thrown back, and with hesitant steps she let him lead her from the library, all the while wondering just what she was getting herself into.

For all that spending time with Dominic was wonderful, there were times that Rox needed space. She still wasn't used to this concept of love and relationships, and it felt irritatingly confining, almost as if she were trapped. After they'd played for a few hours, she'd told him she needed a little time alone to think, and he'd obliged, saying he did also. And so eventually Rox found herself in the library, climbing the stairs to the second floor loft.

From here she could look out over the open space of the library. Rox leaned against the railing, arms folded and body relaxed. No one else was up here, and the emptiness and solitude was peaceful, soothing. Her mind was occupied with thoughts of Dominic and Nicolai, her eyebrows furrowed slightly as she wondered what to do. She and Nicolai had never fought this badly before, and the rage in his eyes left her little doubt as to the extent of his anger. Dominic was right; she really had pissed him off this time. Humming softly to herself, she sang in a low whisper, watching the few other students wandering below. "Ichiniku hana, sakura aichaku..."

Mode had been motionless nearly two hours when the footsteps made him turn his head slightly as someone ascended the balcony stairs. He heard the much softer sound of boots on the carpeting of the balcony and then a quiet thump and a slight vibration as the railing trembled the tiniest bit. Someone was sitting against it.

Feminine fingertips, delicate with short, well-kept nails trailed over the edge of the railing. Her whole hand was likely between the bars, but from where he sat on top of the two story bookcase in the recessed space under the balcony, he could see only the tips of her fingers. A light, girlish voice hummed, faintly singing something in a language he couldn't understand, Chinese or Japanese. He heard no pages turning, no typing. The girl wasn't here to work. She was here for the same reason he was.

To think.

It had taken him only a few minutes to scale the bookcase and hide himself. No one had seen him come in, no one had seen him secret himself into this dark, dusty crawlspace, and that made him feel safe. His mind was still confused, but he felt clearer up here. He felt cleaner, more in control and less like he was about to commit some nameless atrocity.

He hadn't expected company.

His eyes strobed between slate and smoke, and it wasn't entirely voluntary when he reached out with a hand and brushed those delicate fingertips with his own.

Rox might have screamed and jumped away, if only she hadn't been so surprised that she was shocked in lethargy. Her thoughts scattered and she stared at the hand that had reached up from under the balcony to brush her own fingers. Chocolatey eyes wide, Rox kneeled, moving her hand down until the other person touched her again, and it was then that she gasped and fell backwards, cursing to herself. "Unko! Shit!"

She stayed that way for a moment, trying to regain her calm, until curiosity got the better of her. She crawled again back toward the railing, trying to peer down to see who it might be, but couldn't find any trace of the person. Confused, she coughed and spoke tentatively, feeling ridiculous. What if she had imagined that?

"Uh, hello?"

Her startled gasp and curse jerked him from his semi-reverie, and his gaze darkened as he railed at himself. Why had he done that? She knew he was here now. She'd probably run off and tell the administration, and he'd have to leave, or prevent her from informing them, and he didn't want to do that. That childlike humming had drawn him. If he'd remained withdrawn, he could have enjoyed that tiny breath of innocent youth until she'd gone, but he'd touched her, and that had broken the spell.

Everything he touched broke.

His eyes were hardening rapidly to slate as he moved to a crouch, preparing to turn and grab the railing to vault onto the balcony and restrain her when her voice came again, hesitant, wondering and a little afraid. "Um, hello?"

He relaxed back to sitting again, a little uncertain as his eyes flickered. It almost wouldn't be...polite...to scare her now, and he didn't really want to. Not most of him, anyway. He would hear her if she tried to leave, and he could always catch her if she fled.

"...hello," he said quietly, his voice barely above a whisper, the smooth tone almost blank with a small inflection of regret. They could have shared silence. Words brought nothing but complication.

So she hadn't been imagining his presence. Rox was beyond curious as she grinned and laid down on the floor, dangling both arms between the railings, her hands waving to him in that childlike clenching fist wave. That someone could have climbed the two story bookcase and hid themselves beneath the balcony didn't exactly scare her, just interested her, and she wondered who it might be down there, in the darkness.

Still couldn't see him, and so she gave up trying as she began to hum again quietly. Moments passed, and then she tilted her head and attempted to peer down once more to see him. "Whatcha doin'?"
