Five minutes into Captain Nordbye's military literature lecture, and Swede was already bored out of her wits.

She let her eyes wander around the room, trying to remain inconspicuous as she glanced toward Dante, who sat staring blankly toward the projection overhead. That wasn't too odd in itself, but she couldn't keep the tiny smirk from her lips as she noticed Rox, slowly beginning to fall asleep at her desk. The girl had her head propped in her hands, but her elbow was sliding, inch by inch, toward the edge of the desk as her chin drooped and her eyes closed.

A quick glance toward Pallas was all the invitation she needed, and Swede quickly typed a message, looking intently as if taking notes. Rox hadn't come back to the barracks at all last night, not until the morning, and had shown up flushed and exhausted. With another grin, she hit the send button, and looked at Pallas with an almost undetectable grin.

Pallas let her eyes slowly slide to her desk as the nearly inaudible beep announced incoming mail. She was tired of this class. The instructor taught directly from the text - hardly surprising, since he'd written it. It was thorough, she'd give him that, but it was only interesting the first time through, and he was basically reciting what he'd required them to read last night.

The message didn't surprise her. Everyone else in this class was bored too. She let out a small, resigned sigh when she saw who it was from. She'd been expecting this since Swede had given her that look when they'd played the simulator with those two Jaydes. Her hope that perhaps it had been swept under the rug by Nathan's reappearance was dashed when she saw the grin on Swede's face.

But, strangely enough, the letter just talked about Rox not coming in last night at all. Pallas shot a glance towards the older girl, who was halfway slumped over her desk and not likely to stay awake much longer, and gave Swede a very small smile in acknowledgement before she typed in her reply and sent it back.

Swede caught the smirk at the same the little message flashed on her display. I see that. Hardly atypical. Have you heard anything from Dante?

That warranted another glance in Dante's direction. Still staring blankly, eyes unfocused. Dante's cellmate Fin, seated nearby, caught her gaze when he grinned. Swede motioned toward her desk, sending him a little note, and he responded with a frown and a message that didn't make much sense. I dunno, but Nicolai and her got in a fight this morning, and Bali had to kick him out.

Interesting.

Nicolai didn't look too pleased, it was true, when she snuck a peek at him. He was glowering angrily, fingers tapping impatiently on the edge of his desk, and Swede looked back toward her desk to write to Pallas, including Fin's note. Interesting indeed. She wasn't quite sure what they had to fight about, but judging from Dante's withdrawn demeanor and Nicolai's irritation, it couldn't have been good. Swede sat back in her chair, running her fingers through her spikes, and waited for Pallas to reply.

Pallas couldn't keep an eyebrow from raising as she scanned Swede's next missive. Bali had to throw him out? That must have been a serious argument. She'd never seen Nicolai lose his temper over anything but the simulator, and even then he never turned truly violent. She turned enough to glance at Nicolai, and his gaze happened to cross hers. Her dark green eyes met his dark blue and she raised her other eyebrow at his expression and sent him a note.

-Good morning, Nicolai. Feeling alright?-

She and Nicolai had a friendly acquaintance. He'd been too wrapped up in chasing her commander to bother her, and that had allowed them a chance to get to know each other a little better. She didn't usually meddle, but this seemed a little more serious than the normal byplay within their little group.

Nicolai was not having a good morning. His discussion with Dante had been anything but a discussion, quickly turning into what had been their first real fight ever. Her stubborn refusal to listen to him had irritated him beyond belief, and he finally lost his temper and turned mean. If she wanted to get fucked over by that twin Donovan, it was her own business, but she'd better not come crying to him like after her battles with Nathan. She responded with some very snide, very accurate comments herself, and Bali eventually kicked him out after he refused to leave when she threw her desk at him and told him to never talk to her again.

Not a good morning indeed. So when Pallas raised her eyebrows at him and forwarded a message, it only took him three keystrokes to reply, before he studiously ignored everyone again and tried to return to his sulking.

Pallas opened the message. Nicolai wasn't in the mood to waste words this morning.

- No. -

She copied her message and Nicolai's reply to Swede and flipped back to the main mail screen to see that she had a new message waiting for her already. Class fell back another priority level when she saw who it was from. Castor, asking if she knew that Nathan had returned. When she looked up to meet his gaze, the fearful look on his face made her reply immediately.

-Yes. What happened?-

Still bored. Watching Nicolai wasn't any fun; he was ignoring everyone, pouting. Pallas was busy typing to someone, and Dante still had that ridiculously far-away look. Fin's story, at least, was interesting, and she wanted to find out more. However, when his reply finally came, accompanied with a half-angry, half-concerned look in his hazel eyes, she lost her grin and took to thinking.

-Bali and I were just coming back from the showers when we heard them shouting at eachother in the barracks... some of the others said that they'd been at it for a while, arguing and everything, so we were gonna leave them alone when there was a big crash and more screaming. They'd locked the door and we couldn't get in, though, so Lem had to come and override the lock. I guess Dante threw her desk at him or something, and Nicolai refused to leave, so Bali kicked him out before he got in trouble with Lem. She just stormed off later, that's all I know but it was pretty nasty, Aria. Will you make sure she's okay?-

Swede sighed and nodded, sending him a little thank you note before turning to glance again at Dante. Hoping to catch her attention, she followed with a message to her, a quick good morning to see if she would even respond. She sighed again in relief as Dante started, looked down at her desk, and flicked her head to the side to give her a blank icy stare before giving her the cold shoulder and ignoring her once more.

That stung. About to try again, she had just opened the text box when the light at the corner of her desk blinked, and she switched to read the new message. From Pallas, but not much, just confirming Nicolai's... bad mood, if it could be called that. Swede frowned and forwarded the other girl Fin's message, biting her lip as she waited to see Pallas's reaction.

As nervous as he was, Castor was relieved when Pallas gave him a calm, serious look in response to his mail. They were technically equals now, but Pallas and Swede and Dante would always feel like superior officers to him, and Pallas verifying that Nathan had indeed returned made him feel a little better, even though he'd been almost positive himself.

His desk flickered to announce the new message arrival, and he opened up her query about what had happened and started to reply.

-Tayce Martial and I saw him attacking another student yesterday evening before lights out. He looked at us. We think he might be after the commander. Wasn't sure it was him; we thought he iced. Me and Hel both want to help if we can. He looks dangerous.-

He sent it and looked back up to Pallas, but she was blinking at her desk thoughtfully as if already reading something, glancing over at Swede quietly. They must be discussing it. His message arrived, and she looked back to her desk to read it.

Pallas studied the rest of Fin's story with growing concern.

This sounded serious indeed. Everyone in their circle and many people outside of it knew how badly disappointed Nicolai had been when Dante kept snubbing him, but he hadn't let that bother him in months. Now it appeared as if something had sparked that old flame, and it seemed considerably less playful than it had before.

Frowning, Pallas was about to email Dante when Castor's reply appeared in her inbox. She read it through and her eyes widened a little. They'd seen him attacking another student last night? The stories of what had happened to Wick had filtered down to her, of course. But that had been three days ago.

-Do you know who it was?-

She sent the message to Castor and then wrote a quick missive to Dante, identical to what she'd sent Nicolai, before copying Castor's messages over to Swede.

A thunk surprised her, and she looked to see Rox sitting up, doing her best to look awake. After a moment of hesitation, she sent Fin's story to Roxy. Of all the other people in their little group, Rox knew Nicolai best. Maybe she could offer some insight.

Not good. Not good at all. Swede quickly replied to Pallas, asking who had been Nathan's victim. She was about to try emailing Dante again when a thud and a muffled curse from behind caught her attention, and she turned to look at Rox, who was rubbing her chin and trying to look as if she were listening. She might have laughed if Castor's message wasn't gnawing at her thoughts so much. Nathan, possibly after Dante, again. After what had happened with Wick, Swede was very, very worried.

Nothing she could do, however, until Castor responded. She amused herself with messaging Rox, grinning slighty as she waited for what was certain to be the response. Pallas was right-- Rox's absences were hardly atypical. But in light of recent occurrences; Nathan's presence, Dante's fight with Nicolai; she just wanted to be certain.

Castor tried to catch her eye, but Pallas was too busy looking at her desk, so he sent her an e-mail with a simple no.

He and Helen had stayed in the Library until lights out last night, neither of them speaking much. There wasn't much to say. They both knew who Nathan was and what he had done. They both saw the strange light in his eyes when he'd turned away from the other soldier and looked at them. They had both felt the same irrationality coming from him in waves as he stood there smirking before turning to leave.

There had been some discussion of approaching the authorities, but they had precious little evidence, no idea who the other soldier was, and had both learned through hard experience how little attention the BattleSchool administration paid to violence between the students. They'd finally agreed that he would contact Pallas this morning in class, and so he had.

He felt uncomfortable away from Helen now. It wasn't the same as missing her. The longer he was away from her, the more antsy he got to make sure that she was alright. Nathan hadn't looked stable, not by a long shot, and he'd had a damned good look at them.

Rox hadn't been aware that she'd fallen asleep until her chin slipped from her hands and she hit the desk hard, startling her with the pain. She sat up quickly, rubbing her jaw as she did her best to hide her weariness and tried to stay awake this time to listen. Luckily, someone messaged her, and she rubbed her eyes tiredly as she opened the note.

She was only partially surprised to read Pallas's letter, the forwarded message from Fin. Nicolai mad at her was one thing, and she already knew just what she was going to do to him. Nicolai mad at Dante... well, that was another. Pallas's evident concern made her smile, just slightly, to herself as another message popped up on her screen.

-And where were you last night, miss?-

That warranted another grin, but a glance toward Swede showed that her friend was watching Dante and Nicolai too. Sheesh. They just never knew what was going on. After sending a quick "Wouldn't you like to know" to Swede, she contemplated how much she should tell Pallas. The girl was their friend, of course, in their group... but Dante's new situation with Donovan seemed rather... private. Judging from the icy expression on Dante's face, she really wasn't in the mood to talk, and Nicolai's angry glowering confirmed his own mood. Well, it wasn't as if she hadn't warned him. Rubbing her eyes again, she responded with a quick note to Pallas and then repropped her chin in her hands once more, trying not to let her eyes fall shut as she thought of last night's interlude with Dominic.

Roxy's mail was short and to the point.

-"Nico's just pissed cause Dante has a new friend, and he's all jealous. He's being a jackass anyway so just ignore him and we'll keep her away from him. He'll live."-

One mystery solved. Nicolai hated to lose. At least it hadn't been about Nathan.

Castor's reply didn't help matters much. He hadn't identified the person Nathan had been beating on. Pallas pulled up the infirmary admissions, but there were no new reports listed. Whoever it was hadn't been injured badly enough to have to go...or was hiding it for fear of worse injury should they try to seek treatment.

Tayce Martial. It was a little early for her to be here, but under the circumstances, Pallas was almost glad. Castor and Helen were both good soldiers, responsible and intelligent. Nathan had been in her toon. Perhaps if she'd taken steps to separate him from the commander before he snapped none of this would have happened. Pallas was too logical to feel guiltily responsible about Nathan's actions; no one had expected him to do what he'd done to Dante and Swede. Still, it was unsettling to have him back here.

And why had he attacked Wick?

Still no response from Dante. Pallas pulled up another empty message window, addressed it to Callenstrom, Moira, and began to type.

Of all the times she really wasn't in the mood to talk, this was one of those days. She'd managed to evade Nicolai all last night, feigning sleep when he'd finally returned from his "chat" with Donovan as he'd called it this morning... but lights-on had brought with it more trouble than she'd cared to deal with. She wasn't quite sure what Nicolai thought he was going to accomplish by telling her all of Donovan's secrets as if she didn't already know them, but his jealousy was unmistakeable, and that had spurned her anger just as much as her refusal to be swayed by his "arguments."

He lost his temper first, not her. Dante continued to stare blankly ahead as she thought, silvery eyes unfocused as she tried to ignore everyone. Swede had messaged her, but she ignored it, giving her friend a passive glance before turning her back to the room again. A little part of her felt guilty, but her anger toward Nicolai erased most of that. Her desk beeped again, a greeting from Pallas, and she looked down at her display, sighing in resignment. No peace today.

A quick "I'm fine," was all the response she gave, but the little message light flickered once more, and a note from Rox appeared this time, making her smile slightly to herself.

-Heyo, I heard what happened with flashboy. Ignore it, he's a fuckstick, and I'm gonna whup his ass good. I'll tell you about it lata, neh? Remember: Nolite te bastarde carborundorum. Our boys are gonna meet us after class. Cheer up. You look ugly when you frown. -Roxypoo-

Rox. That assurance soothed her ruffled demeanor, and it was with a grateful smile that Dante glanced up to look at Roxy, grinning a little as the girl winked and made a kissy-face at her. But Nicolai caught the motion too, glaring at her, and it was with renewed irritation that Dante's smile faded and she relapsed into silence, staring ahead again just as blankly as before. She hoped that Rox was right. Maybe Nicolai would get his comeuppance.

Dante's email was almost as brief as Nicolai's had been, and Pallas wasted no time. If her ex-commander was well enough to blow kisses at Rox, she was well enough to hear about Nathan. She copied Castor's messages to her and hit the send button. She didn't want to make her day any worse, but she wasn't going to let her walk around unprepared, if Castor's suggestion was correct.

She was expecting perhaps another message from Rox, or something snide from Nicolai, but Pallas and Castor's words were a complete and unwelcome surprise as she blinked, startled, and glanced toward Pallas.

Nathan might be after her?

Dante sighed tiredly, unconsciously rubbing her bruised wrists as she stared down at the note that blinked on her display. He'd attacked some other soldier, but... realization slowly bled into her gaze, melding quicksilver as she looked at Pallas again, eyes wide. She'd gone to see Jor, and in her preoccupation with trying to gain his favor, had noted but failed to really recognize his injuries. Wick couldn't do that kind of damage to him, not in her condition, and that left only Nathan who Jor could conceivably fight with. His swollen black eye and bruised face were a frightening testament to Castor's words, and Dante typed frantically in response.

Sent. She kept her gaze locked on Pallas, watching the other girl for a response as she continued to rub her hands together and listen to that terrifying sentence repeat in her mind. We think he might be after the commander... we think he might be after the commander... Not now, not anymore, she wished. They were going to have to kill him, and as much as she hated Wick with all her soul, for the first time the girl was on her side of the battle. If she wanted to live... then Angel would have to die... We think he might be after the commander...

Pallas met her commander's gaze across the classroom.

Jor. Jordan Windhaven, Wick's consort, the same boy who'd attacked Dante on the first day of his transfer to Fox. Nathan had defended her then. Who could have foreseen his violent change of heart? Pallas was done attempting to work that out. Instead, she was puzzling over why he would attack Jor now.

She nodded quietly to Dante, but didn't return her email. Wick had been in her toon, but Jor was more approachable. She closed down the email to Wick and opened up a blank one, preparing to address it to Jor...and then changed her mind. Jor needed to be braced in person. She addressed her email to Castor instead, asking him to keep an eye on Nathan, but from a good distance, and then went back to considering how she was going to talk to Windhaven.

There's only so long a person can watch the little time display blink past the minutes, and by the time the end of class rolled around, Rox was certain she'd never get out, ever. But finally the boring old captain closed his book, and frowned at them all in the familiar expression they all knew meant homework.

"Class dismissed. But..." he frowned more severely against the instant rustling of uniforms as everyone tried to get up and leave as soon as humanly possible. "But, for Thursday's homework assignment, I want you all to read chapters 15-25 in "Wars of the World." Understood?" The groans echoing around the room made it clear they understood all too well. "Very good. Dismissed."

It took a long moment to shake herself fully awake as Dante slid through the departing students and over to her side. "Donovan and Dominic are going to meet us?" Rox grinned broadly, nodding and elbowing her friend conspiratorially in the ribs, until someone made a harsh mocking snort behind her, and she spun around to see Nicolai smiling with sugary falseness. "Gee Rox, you must have fallen asleep at least five times in class today. Boys keep you up all night?"

"Perhaps I should ask you the same thing, Mishkin. Bali and Fin keep you busy?" Dante giggled as Nicolai scowled, and he hissed in a malicous tone. "No, that's more of a twin thing, don't you think? Have a nice day, ladies." He stalked away as Dante turned to glance at Rox, her eyebrows raised in confusion. But Rox just shook her head in mock pity. "He's just jealous he doesn't have a man anymore, eh? C'mon, let's go before the boys get impatient. Heya Swede..."

Swede bounded over, giving Dante a worried glance. "Eez everting okee? Dat Neecolai, he eez acteeng like a beetcha all day." Dante sighed and Rox rolled her eyes. "Yeah, he's just being a hiretsukan, but I got somethin' that'll show him who's boss. We'll talk about it later though, c'mon..." They caught Pallas's attention as they left, and filed out slowly into the corridor, talking amongst themselves as they went.
