A Brief History of Noble Family Organization in Sunan, or How Becca Spent Her Time at Work All Alone and Sick With No Hugs

Check out this cool not tree. Children are listed in order of birth. Pluses indicate marriage. I'll expand this

later. For right now I just wanted to make it clear that Raspeth is NOT a princess, heh.

Emperor Avinosuna (m)

Emperor's younger brother Lonin Valesuna(m) + Vaer Kaleni(suna)(f) = Para(f), Shidon(m), Tilume(f), Imaret(f),

Imaret Kaleni(f) + Mirono Garell(m) = Torin(m), Raspeth(f)

Right! Let's talk names.

Conventions

-suna is applied to the end of the family names of individuals from families who can trace same-sex ancestry back to a present or previous Emperor. Before Lonin married Vaer, her family name was Kaleni. Her parents would have remained Kaleni.

*The sons will take the last name Vale, and the first son takes the -suna upon his father's death. If the first son dies without a male heir then the second son takes it. If there is no second son then it will go to his father's younger brother. If there is no younger brother, this branch of the Valesuna ends. Repeat from *.

*The daughterS will take the last name Kaleni, and the first daughter takes the -suna upon her mother's death. If the first daughter dies without a daughter then the second daughter takes

it. If there is no second daughter it will go to her mother's younger sister. If there is no younger sister, this branch of the Kalenisuna ends. Repeat from *.

The net result is that only one person at any one time can have the last name Kalenisuna, unless two people from the Kaleni family happen to marry an emperor's sibling. Only people with the -suna extension can lay claim to the throne. Anyone without it would be rejected by the rest of the nobility out of hand.

Emperor Avinosuna no longer has a family name. His given name was Avin. His father's given name was Vale, and he was Emperor Valesuna. If you become emperor (or empress, that works too) then your given name becomes the family name you pass on to your children (except your heir, who takes his/her given name + -suna or -osuna depending on whether your name ends in a vowel or a consonant).

Emperor Avinosuna's children will all carry the family name Avinosuna. As they marry the name gets passed down or abandoned by the normal channels.

The Emperor/Empress may NOT take anyone with the -suna as a spouse. His/her spouse loses the family name and takes the ruler's name to replace it.

Examples:

Shidon Vale will become Shidon Valesuna when his father dies.

Para Kaleni will become Para Kalenisuna when her mother dies.

Torin's last name is just Garell and always will be.

This begs a more detailed family tree, so I'm going to go play with paint now.
