1. The Red Shell Tavern

The Red Shell Tavern is one of the oldest buildings in Guildsport. Like Guildsport, it has had many owners and has never really known a quiet night. Tonight is no exception, and with the influx of hands from the incoming caravans and the celebrations for those about to depart the bar is doing a brisk business. Merchants in rich colors and craftsmen in working drab huddle in their own groups on either side of each of the two large wooden rooms, and the others - the caravan workers, the sailors and the other miscellaneous transients - form their own small inclusions in the middle and the corners. The patrons easily number more than two hundred, and the conversation is a constant dull roar.

The room is dim despite the extensive candlework, but the Red Shell is of sufficient class that the candles are attended and replaced as they go out and heated waxtroughs collect the remnants so they don't land on the patrons. Barmaids shove their way through the throng with relatively polite force to deliver drinks, and those who don't like shouting to attract their scant attention hunch at the bar itself, a long scratched affair that nevertheless bears a well-worn shine. The bar also serves as a place for those interested in hiring or being hired, and a significant section of the stools are occupied. Mercenary soliders, craftsmen and laborers - as well as several others whose occupations are less apparent - decorate a significant section of the bar. Some are approached and move off to tables in company.

Not all of the out-of-towners sit at the bar. At one of the edge of the northern room a dark haired woman and her rangy male companion lounge, drinking with the comfort that comes from long practice. In the center of the same room, a young woman in a hooded riding cloak looks shyly at her surroundings while an older woman who appears to be with her talks in a low, clipped language to a merchant seated with them. A few tables away from them a pair of lads not quite out of their teens with large packs on the benches beside them talk and giggle together and cast glances of guilty interest at the barmaids. Another man of indeterminate age and closed expression sits against the wall that separates the north room from the south and does not appear to notice the drink in front of him, though his hand remains around the handle.

"I'm going to look this time. You can look too. No one will even know. Can't do any harm, us looking and them not knowing. Not much harm, right?"
It was the same conversation they always had, and the same question she always asked, and he knew his part in this play by heart. When she smiled at him it was his cue to shake his head, and when her smile turned even more beguiling, it was his role to refuse her, as he always did.

"No, Mal."

"You have no sense of adventure," she said disdainfully, scowling into the bottom of her mug before finishing off the last swallow. "You can stay behind for all I care. One of the ships can have you. I'll make this run myself. Lahkis isn't that far away. A month. I can't remember the last time I had a month out of your watch. And I can keep the entire fee for myself, too, 'stead of having to share with the likes of you."

Reno knew better than to take any of her threats seriously, and wordlessly offered her the rest of his drink to pacify her. She frowned at him, but by the time she'd drank her way through the mug she was mostly done with her sulking, and her attention had shifted to other things.

"Quiet lads in here tonight," she sighed, with a hint of longing, and he shook his head. The night before a run began was the worst time for them. They were both restless, Mal especially, and he always had his work cut out for him, keeping her out of trouble. Now she was busy looking around the bar, eyeing the ones she knew weren't regulars here, and it was Reno's turn to sigh.

She smirked at him, but got up anyway. "Need a drink." He watched her cut a swathe through the crowd as she made her way to the bar, sidestepping and elbowing until she was out of his sight, and he sighed again.

Devona dismissed the latest in a long line of potential guides and scanned the room once more, her hope beginning to fade. There were only a few hours left before the tavern closed for the evening and she was no closer to getting them out of Guildsport and headed toward the eastern coast. Maybe it had been a mistake to come here. The girl shouldn't be in here. She glanced at her charge and narrowed her eyes, and the girl hastily pulled her hood more closely about her. Devona took a long breath and tried to paint on an understanding expression, but her own temper was short enough and she had little sympathy to spare for her companion's discomfort.

More patrons came and went, men and more men and none of them appeared suitable. Most were mercenaries and brigands by the look of them, and Devona would rather save herself the trouble and kill the girl now than to ask one of them to lead them into the wilderness. Her standards had dropped rapidly since they had arrived in Guildsport. She'd thought that the city would be large enough and refined enough to yield them the kind of guide they needed, but she should have known better. All she'd found were filthy barbarians, gouging merchants and thieves, and now she was nearly out of time. Better to travel on their own than to spend any longer here; inaction was no longer an option. She would see them across the Vesari herself. The possibility of death on the sands was not the certainty of death if they lingered.

She was about to stand when a woman pushed past her table, slipping in between the great hulks of men with ease and planting herself firmly at the bar. She had on riding leathers and boots, but she didn't look like she'd just come into town. The knife in her belt looked like many of the other local blades she'd seen but her voice identified her as a foreigner, though she spoke the common tongue well. She was reasonably well-groomed and not ill-favored, and as she turned around to head away from the bar Devona stood up and held out an arm, half-blocking the woman's path.

"Ranger," she said tersely, "Forgive my rudeness, but I have need of your services." The woman said nothing and her eyes flicked to the girl and back, so Devona plunged ahead. "I am willing to pay for the time it takes you to hear my proposition." She pulled loose the small leather pouch she'd kept at her waist and held it up. "Thirty gold pieces, Guildsport weight, for thirty minutes of your time. Do you accept?"

Mal had two mugs in hand when she stepped away from the bar, and was on her way back to the table when a woman stuck her arm out. It blocked her path enough to make her frown, and she cast a flat look over just as the woman started talking.

"Ranger, forgive my rudeness, but I have need of your services." Ranger? Mal stopped, looked the other woman over, and then glanced at the girl that seemed to be with her. They were both foreigners, and neither looked like the type that usually asked for her services. It made her curious, and then suspicious, but when the little pouch of coins was dangled in front of her, she figured she could oblige them.

She shrugged. "Sure." With a quick smile she reached out and hooked a finger around the strings of the pouch, and after a pause the woman let her have it. "I'm over there," Mal said, nodding toward the far edge of the northern room, and then turned and began her way toward her table without looking to see if they were following.

Reno's eyes held the question when she sat down next to him, and she handed him his ale with a wink. "Company."

The woman smiled and reached for the purse, and after studying her face Devona let her have it. It would be worth it, she was certain.

The ranger led the way and Devona gestured to the girl, who stood and followed meekly. The girl's gaze was not on the ranger, however, but on a pair of stripling lads seated near the door. Devona noticed with irritation that the two were returning the silent interest and placed herself between the girl and her immature admirers, slipped an arm around her protectively and hurried her along.

The crowds weren't much thicker than they had been, but for a heartstopping moment Devona couldn't spot the ranger. Then she did spot her, relaxed, and took another two steps forward before she stopped again.

There was a man with her, a tall scruffy specimen with shaggy brown hair. At least he didn't appear to be the loud drunken sort that most of the other men here were. Disappointed but resigned, she steered the girl over to the table and settled them both onto the bench opposite her prospective guide. The pouch had disappeared, and Devona looked at the man and then back to the woman. Should she speak with the man here? She wanted no misunderstanding that might include him in their travel plans, but it would not do to alienate the first good potential by casting aspersions on the character of her acquaintance. The woman said nothing, and Devona realized she was wasting time and relented.

"We need a guide to Lahkis, ranger," she said in a low voice. "We have crossed the Vesari once -in the other direction - but our home lies on the far side and our last guide has abandoned us here. You speak with an accent I can't place, but I know that I've heard it in Lahkis more than I've heard it here. I can pay you well, ranger, and I can pay your supplies and ours for the crossing. Guide me and my daughter across and I will pay you ten times what you have in that pouch - plus expenses."

Mal was not, by occupation, a ranger. Nor was she a guide. She and Reno were runners-- couriers, by any other name-- and they were very, very good at what they did. Rich, powerful people gave them expensive, valuable items to be ran, and in return they were paid a great deal of money. What the woman was offering was a substantial sum, but she and the girl were people, not packages, and Mal did not ferry foreigners around.

She could feel Reno's silent disapproval, and acknowledged it with a gentle nudge beneath the table. He said nothing, and his expression didn't change, but he relaxed enough that she knew he'd understood.

"You're asking the wrong people, lady. We aren't guides." Mal waved her hand toward the other room. "There's plenty of guides and merchants over there who'd be happy to have your money. Plenty of caravans that you two could buy onto for that amount. Lahkis ain't too bad a journey, and most around here have been through the Vesari." She settled back in her chair and gave the best apologetic smile she could muster for thirty goldpieces. "But like I said, we aren't guides."

Encouraged that it wasn't a flat no, Devona settled in and began to haggle.

"I appreciate your situation," she said with a creditable amount of sincerity, "and I ask that you consider ours. The caravans and the guides of which you speak are not safe for a woman and her daughter to travel with alone. As a woman who is obviously able to handle herself, I'm sure you can appreciate how difficult it would be for someone without your skills to manage in such company. This may not be your normal line of work, but I assure you that you are perfectly suited to our needs in this capacity." She sat back and studied the woman and did not look once at the man. "I had not realized that you were not in the general business of providing escort. You have an air about you that suggests you would provide an excellent defense. Of course, I will be happy to offer you extra compensation for the extra trouble this will cause you." She paused a moment as if calculating something from the woman's face. "Make it five hundred gold - and another two hundred when we reach our destination intact."

By now Mal was grinning broadly at the woman's flattery, and it was Reno's turn to press his boot heel down on her toes. It made the amusement in her smile turn to something a little harder, and she crossed her arms over her chest and affected a serious contemplation of the offer.

It seemed like she was trying to decide whether or not to accept, but truth be told, Mal had already made up her mind. Seven hundred gold was a very pretty price, and she and Reno were already heading to Lahkis on a run. Taking on the woman and girl would be nearly double the pay for the same journey, and if she found the prospect of spending a month with the two strangers to be unpleasant, for that sum she could learn to live with it.

Still, Reno would have to be convinced, and there was the matter of logistics to work through. They already had their own horses, and enough supplies to make the trip, but their two charges looked like they were going to need the whole packlist. It would be easier to buy them all onto a caravan than worry about food, water, and transportation, and it would be much safer, too. She and Reno traveled alone because, as the woman suggested, they could provide an excellent defense. But Mal wouldn't go so far as to get herself killed for a guide job, and protecting the women could be the caravan leader's problem.

Decision made, Mal tilted her chin to look the question at Reno, and answered him when he raised an eyebrow at her. "<Two for one, sweets?>" she asked him in a low voice, speaking now in their native tongue, instead of common. "<Can't do any harm, us getting rich and them following us. We'll caravan.>"

He all but crushed her foot beneath his, and Mal turned her wince into another smile for the woman. "Fine, but here's our terms. We'll provide you escort, but we'll be going with a caravan. Safer that way, you know, for you and your daughter." Her eyes twinkled. "Won't be more than two hundred to get you outfitted, and you'll pay that to the caravan leader. We get our five hundred upfront at the start of the journey, and your promise of two at the end. You'll follow my rules, we won't have any problems, and you two'll get to Lahkis safe and sound. Is it a deal?"

Devona hesitated. This was not ideal. They could have secured a place in a caravan themselves by paying more, but it would still have been less than what she would be paying this woman. It also appeared that this man would be accompanying them - not that that mattered, considering that a caravan would mean more men, and that was unavoidable now. On the other hand, this woman would know which caravans were safe and which were not, and she didn't seem like the type to lure in bait for slavers. All in all, despite the unwelcome factors, this was by far the most promising opportunity since their arrival in Guildsport, and they could not afford to delay any longer.

"Let it be as you say," she said at last, relieved that at least the decision was made and it was now only the doing that remained. "It is late, and we have much to do to be ready to depart with you. We can meet you in front of the Red Shell tomorrow morning?"

"Alright. I'll ask around tonight, but tomorrow we go caravan hunting. We should be able to buy on and head out in the next few days." The woman nodded, and Mal looked her over one last time before putting her boots up on the table to indicate that their conversation was over. "Be ready."

When the woman had hustled the girl up from their table, and Mal was certain that they were gone, she dropped the smile and turned to Reno. He gave her a level stare and she matched it for awhile before finally conceding the point and sighing. "Look, mate, more gold won't hurt us."

"Running, Mal. Not guiding."

"I know, I know. But we can run and guide at the same time, eh?" She didn't try to charm him this time, and he didn't try to humor her. "'sides. We pocket the five, and if the guidin' business doesn't suit us, we move on. Caravan'll keep 'em and it won't hurt us none." The lines around his eyes softened a little, and sensing an advantage, she pounced. "Over a thousand for the run, five or seven for the guide... we'll be rich as merchants, sweets. What could be bad about bein' rich?"

Reno took a drink, and she knew she'd won. Now she grinned at him, and he gave her the faintest suggestion of a smile in return. Seventeen hundred gold. They could buy whatever they wanted. Anticipation made her laugh out loud, and she downed the rest of her mug and stood. "Let's to bed, then, and dream of our take."

The girl's face was tired, but Devona had her in front of the tavern with their few bags as soon as the sun was up to avoid the risk of losing their guide.

The air was still chill and damp with the night's dew, and Devona scanned the slowly growing crowds intently. She would have preferred to choose her guide in the morning, so that departure might be arranged the same day and without separation. She didn't think the courier-turned-guide would cheat her, but there were never any guarantees when dealing with...well, when dealing with anyone, really.

The marketplace came to life, and Devona purchased safe-looking bread rolls and handed the girl two of them, keeping one for herself. The girl examined it and then tasted it, and Devona began to scan the crowds for the guide.

They were up with the sun, and had breakfasted and left the inn before the majority of people woke and began to move into the streets. From there they picked up the last few supplies they would need from a nearby vendor, packed everything onto their horses, and set out for the merchant district.

Mal's agent, a man by the name of Varn, met them at the appointed time and the exchange of goods took place. It was nothing more than a box, a small box, even, and it didn't look valuable. That was good. A few times she'd made the mistake of accepting large, complicated cargo, and it was a nightmare to run something so damn conspicuous. After the requisite contract details and delivery information, and after Varn had left, she shook the little box, but it didn't sound like anything exciting and Reno gave her a stern frown. Disappointed, she carefully packed it in a food tin specifically made to hide its contents, and they set out again, this time for the tavern.

The woman and girl were already waiting in front of the Red Shell, and Mal swung down from her horse to greet them. "Mornin'," she said, genially enough, and motioned toward the pair's bags with a nod. "Get your gear and let's head over to the caravans. There's bound to be someone willin' to take your money and lead us to Lahkis. Let's go."
