Saul shook the woman by her shoulder and her head came up immediately, though her eyes were slitted against the late afternoon sun, and while she was blinking he had time to get his first good look at her.

She was older than the other one, hard to tell by how much. Her hair was still bound up, a dark brown color under the dust, and her skin was an indeterminate color of tan. Her eyes had a foreign tilt to them, and as they adjusted to the light they proved to be a strange light grey color. She looked around the tent and spotted the other woman and leaned toward her, and Saul caught her arm.

"Your name," he said shortly in Brindian, "and the name of your mistress."

She drew her chin up. "My name would mean nothing to you. Her name you are not fit to speak."

Saul grinned cheerfully at the woman's haughtiness. "I am not particular, woman. I can come up with one if you prefer. She killed one of my men and wounded another. I'll have no trouble finding things to call her." The woman only glared at him, and his grin faded to a half smile. "You imperialists are all the same, so important to yourselves. Here in the desert you are only women, and women have only one use. Give me your names and perhaps I can find another."

His casual threat was taken to heart, and she dropped her eyes in defeat. "My name is Devona," she said just above a whisper, "and her name is Lady Malorik Kalenisuna." She looked up at him, pleading on her face now. "Please, do not harm her."

His eyes slid over the form of the other woman. They'd stripped her of her weaponry and her armor last night, and Saul had taken their boots as well; captives were much less likely to escape barefoot. "Wake her up," he said at last, and released Devona's arm.

Malorik did not want to be woken.

For a long moment she just lay there, listening to the voice speak her name and trying her best not to hear it at all. Everything hurt, and she wanted only to fall back into sleep, but visions of battle were swimming insistently behind her eyes and she eventually opened them.

Devona was hovered over her, shaking her arm, and Mal blinked up at her. "Where's Reno?" Her own voice was raspy, and she struggled to sit up, but something was wrong with her hands and feet. It only took a look to realize that she had been bound, and that she was missing her blades and her armor and her boots, and anger poured into her gaze. "Untie me, Devona. I have to find Reno."

She kept her grip on Malorik's arm and brought her mouth close to the girl's ear. The language Malorik and Reno had spoken to each other was subtly different than the one that she had learned at the border of the southlands, but she hoped it was not more difficult for Malorik to understand than it had been for her to understand Malorik's dialect.

"Reno is dead, Malorik, and we are captive. Say nothing to this man, and when he goes away I will explain."

The bandit leader was scowling at the foreign language. "You'll speak in Brindian, woman, or not at all," he growled, and Devona pulled away from Malorik and looked the girl in the face, willing her to comply.

It did not occur to her that Devona had spoken their language all along; any surprise she might have felt was lost in the news the woman gave.

Reno was dead.

She had seen him wounded, yes, had seen him fall, but it was one thing to think him hurt and another to know him gone. It didn't seem real. He had been with her so long that he seemed invincible; nothing had ever harmed them before, and Devona couldn't possibly be telling her the truth.

Mal searched Devona's face, hoping this was another sort of subterfuge, but it was not. An angry voice spoke nearby, and she swallowed heavily and turned her attention to it. There was a man there, one of the bandits, and suddenly she was furious again.

"Murderer," she hissed, and spat at him like a snake. It was easier to focus the pain of her loss on him, instead of dwelling on it, and she narrowed her eyes and cursed him. "<The gods will have you for what you've done, or I will kill you first.>"

Saul was unmoved. "And so are you, my lady. We killed one of your men and you killed one of ours. Now we will take you back to Guildsport and collect your bounty, if you are who your servant claims you are. What is your name?"

The noble just glared at him, and the servant woman was the one to answer his question. "How dare you doubt my word, worthless servant of Brindia? Or do you think yourself so much a fool that you risked your life and the lives of your men for a woman you thought was a peasant?" She yanked aside the top of the girl's collar, and Saul's eyes narrowed in satisfaction at the sight of an imperialist atacre pendant, the quintessential symbol of the vain foreign nobility, and left the women to themselves.

The man left, and Mal pulled herself away from Devona and huddled in her bonds. She didn't understand what was happening; there was something more here than she knew, something deeper than simply being taken captive by bandits. For now all she could focus on was Reno's loss, and that this was somehow Devona's fault, all this talk of bounties and peasants and the necklace that she had been given.

A hand touched her shoulder, and she turned on the woman with another hiss. "Don't touch me!" She scooted backwards awkwardly. "This has something to do with you, I know it. Don't you dare touch me."

Devona dropped her hands and sat back on her heels.

"As you wish," she replied softly in the ranger's language. "This is not my doing and not my wish, Malorik. I know you are grieving, and I grieve with you. Reno was a good man, and there are not many."

"He was my only family," she shot back, starting to shiver. "How can you even say you grieve with me? You don't know anything." Every word was bitter and her voice held the tears that she wouldn't show, but she continued talking, shaking more violently. "There was no bounty on me, so it must be you, you and Raspeth, and you knew it and dragged us into this anyway. You--" Her anger failed her, and Mal dropped her head. "He didn't want to take you. He didn't want to and I didn't listen to him."

"I did not know," she replied calmly, "but if I had known, yes, I would have dragged you into it, or someone like you. I did not vouch for your safety. I paid you to vouch for mine. I did not lie to you, and I did not force you to accompany me." She moved closer to Malorik and the woman did not lift her head, so she began to untie the knots that bound Malorik's hands together. "I have grown to appreciate your company," she said more gently as she worked at the knots, "and the company of your man. I did not know him as you did, but he was quiet and kind to the girl. There was no harshness in him, and I am sorry for your loss." The rope dropped from around Malorik's wrists and Devona brushed her fingertips over them to make sure no damage had been done and then went to work on the cord that wrapped Malorik's ankles.

The woman was right, and Malorik knew it. It had been her own greed that prompted her to take on as a guide, and ultimately she and Reno had decided for themselves. These were not circumstances that could have been foreseen, or prepared for, and she fell silent.

Devona untied her. Mal was not injured, as far as she could tell, though her muscles were sore and her head was pounding. It took her a moment to compose herself, before she reached out and squeezed the other woman's hand lightly.

"Thank you," she said, without anger. "But now we are captive, without weapons or horses or... I don't even know where we are." She sighed and rested her forehead in the palm of her hand. "He spoke to you. What does he want from us?"

Relieved, Devona squeezed back and then crawled around behind Malorik and began to inspect the swollen lump under the woman's hair with delicate touches. "He believes you to be noble," she said in a low voice, "and if it was the girl he was looking for, he believes you to be a Suna noblewoman of high birth. He'll bring you to whoever set the bounty, and depending on who it was that person may either try to ransom you back to Sunan or kill you." Malorik stiffened under her fingertips at the mention of Sunan, and Devona stopped and pulled her hands away.

"I know what your people think of the Suna, Malorik," she said quietly. "I'm sure my people, whoever they are, think much the same." She saw the woman's hand clenched into a fist on the ground next to her and began to speak more urgently. "These are not bandits, Malorik. They are mercenaries, and as long as their captain believes you to be his prize then you are safe from them."

She did not trust herself to speak.

The Suna were, amongst others, the greatest force that sought to claim the land that belonged to Malorik's people. It was a battle that had been fought for centuries, and would be fought for centuries more; they gained land, then lost it, back and forth between them over the years. Her own tribe, the Kalion, lived at the divide between continents, and had born the brunt of the struggle for as long as it had existed.

Now, to owe her safety to the pretense of being not only Suna, but also a noblewoman... it was almost unthinkable. Almost. But Mal had nearly the same contempt for her own people, for the ones who had disowned her, and she held alliances with no one but herself. And she wanted to live.

So, slowly, she relaxed beside Devona, her decision made. "Very well." It was a far easier agreement to make than to follow, and she looked up and frowned. "I... but what do I do? I don't even speak Suna, and with scars and swords and tribal markings I make a very poor noblewoman."

Devona smiled at Malorik then, a triumphant secretive smile. "I am only a servant, Malorik, but I have served the greatest of ladies. I have seen noblewomen who go armed to battle, and noblewomen who wear their scars with pride." She lifted the side of Malorik's light tunic and gazed at the interlocking lines and curls on the woman's stomach. "I have not seen the like of this before, but it is finely drawn. It does not make you unfeminine to someone who does not know their meaning." She let the tunic drop and took Malorik's chin in her fingers and studied her features, analyzing them critically. "He is only a man, Malorik," she said dismissively, turning the other woman's head slightly this way and slightly that, "and you are a woman. He does not speak Suna or the language of the southland, and neither do any of his men; they speak no language between each other that I do not know. You are beautiful," she said decisively, and released the woman's chin, "and he is only a man, Malorik," she repeated at last, her voice now almost unconcerned. "Let me speak for you for now. Pretend you hate the sight of him, if pretend you must. Refuse to speak to him, and I will get us what we require, and when we reach Guildsport we will make our escape."

Despite the danger, Malorik was relieved to let control of this situation fall into Devona's more capable hands, and she acquiesed with a nod. There was little for her to do, aside from staying silent, and that would be difficult enough. She would simply have to do whatever Devona thought was best, and when this was done, then she could do as she wished.

And then they will regret having taken me.

It was a reassuring idea, if not a futile one at this time, and she curled up to rest. After a time her head stopped aching, and she fell asleep again, though not for long. Devona woke her again at the sound of talking outside, and Mal sat up and brushed the dust from her face as the tent door opened and the bandit leader returned.

She looked him over, and under different circumstances would have found him attractive but unremarkable. He was like all men who made their trade traveling through the desert, dark and swarthy and fit, though he was not a clansman. She couldn't decipher his origins, but she didn't care to, and when he met her gaze her eyes narrowed.

"<Back to torment us,>" she muttered to Devona, looking to the other woman as if she couldn't stand the sight of him. "<Shame I only killed one of them.>"

Saul left the women alone for the better part of the day and woke in time to take the second watch with Laro. The desert was quiet and there was little to do, and though his eyes were sharp his mind wandered to his captives.

He had never seen a female warrior before. He had heard of them from travellers who had seen more of the world than he, but this Malorik was not what he had expected from their descriptions. The women of his village did not fight in battle. It was a man's trait and a man's right to fight in battle. The women of his acquaintance had other, more subtle ways of making their displeasure known, and a woman of breeding would no more draw a sword than she would scrap with a dog in the street.

He had expected that such a female warrior would be a solid mannish giant. This woman was tall for a woman but not overtall. She was built like a woman and not overly muscled, but he'd seen her wield her blades with deadly effect. They were in his tent now. He'd spent time looking them over. They were well-made and balanced, lighter than he would have liked but not so light as he would have thought. They had many nicks and cuts along their blades. They had been used many times and carefully attended. Warrior's weapons. Only an eccentric noblewoman could have indulged such an absurd inclination, to travel armed and alone with only one guard and a single servant.

The sun grew lower in the sky, and the men began to rise. He stood up and nodded to Laro and then moved off to the supplies. The horses had to be fed, and the women as well. The men would eat in the saddle.

He brought the food to the women himself as the others were occupied in breaking down the camp. He stepped into the tent and caught sight of the noblewoman as she sat up, fixed him with a disgusted stare and then turned to her servant and said something disdainful. She was dirty and only half-dressed and any reasonable woman in her state would have been cowering for her fate, but she looked merely irritated.

The woman Devona nodded grimly to her mistress and then turned to him, and he handed her the single wooden plate. "Eat fast," he said without preamble, and looked at Malorik again, more boldly. She did not look his way, and he tired of her nonsense and left the tent to attend to his horse. When he returned the food was gone, and both the Lady Malorik and Devona stood ready to depart. He eyed the former's bare legs and smirked. She couldn't ride like that, not unless she wanted burns from the saddle, and yet she hadn't asked for her clothing or anything else.

"Let's go," he ordered, and the lady started toward the exit. Her woman Devona stopped her, and the lady turned a glare on her servant. Devona flinched, but spoke directly to Saul. "Bring my lady her clothing, captain," she said beseechingly. Malorik turned her glare on Saul then, who laughed at her and went to fetch the woman's leather trousers from his horse and brought them back. The women were no longer facing each other, and Devona was holding her cheek and looking crestfallen.

"Be kinder to your slave, Lady," he chided and tossed the clothing at her. She caught the bundle out of the air and put them on while he watched, and when she was done he herded them out of the tent. His men took it down and packed it and the band made ready to leave. Laro took Devona's arm and led her to his horse, and Malorik began to follow. Saul caught her arm - tight muscle under his fingertips - and pulled her back. "No, my lady. You ride with me."

He had brought them food and then left again; as soon as he was gone Devona began to whisper to her, and when he returned Mal did as she'd been told.

It was not hard to show disdain for him, to be disgusted at his little show of power and his eyes on her. It was harder to treat Devona as a servant, for Malorik had no tolerance for slavery, but she had agreed to follow the woman's direction and so she would. Still, it seemed to have worked, for the man brought her clothes at Devona's request, and Mal would have smiled at her if he hadn't been watching.

He led them outside, but stopped her from following Devona. "No, my lady. You ride with me." She looked at his hand on her arm, and then up to his face, meeting his gaze without a word until he tugged her over to his horse. It was not just pretense that made her want to assert her own will, and she pulled her arm from his grasp and swung up into the saddle without his help. He followed suit, settling in behind her, and looped an arm around her waist. She frowned, but didn't say anything.

They began to move. Malorik counted seven other mercenaries, all on horseback, and all were armed. She watched the line for awhile, devising ridiculous strategies to attack, imagining what they might do for escape, although she knew it was pointless. It was only a way to pass the time, to keep her mind from Reno, but even that failed eventually, and she began to search for another diversion.

One was sitting behind her in the saddle, and she smirked to herself. "Is this what you do for trade, sandrat? Kidnap women in hopes for gold?"

She rode well, and they were travelling in silence comfortably for some time before she spoke.

"Is this what you do for trade, sandrat? Kidnap women in hopes for gold?"

Her voice was derisive, and he grinned at the dark coil of hair bound at the base of her skull. "Only when their heads alone are insufficient, my lady," he replied easily.

She made a sound that he would take for disapproval, though she was amused at his answer. His threat should have meant something to her, should have marked him as dangerous, if nothing else had yet, but Malorik was not easily intimidated. She was aware of her own value to him, false though it was, and her eyes were smiling even as she scowled.

"I suppose I should be grateful that my head is, as you say, insufficient," she said, in a tone that indicated she wasn't grateful at all. "But I think your head would do just fine for me."

He laughed heartily at her brazenness. The woman was an imperialist, a noble and a slave keeper, and if the bounty had not specified that she be delivered alive and relatively unharmed he would not have hesitated to keep her unconscious and carry her like the baggage she was, but she was entertaining with her haughty bearing and bare feet. He did not bother to reply. She was only a woman, after all, and an ill-mannered shrew at that.

They stopped once during the night to rest the horses and then continued, and he pushed the group well past daybreak before he finally called a halt. Part of it was his eagerness to return to Guildsport and be rid of his cargo, but he also wanted his men too tired to make trouble over the women. Four of those left were new to his band and he chose not to test their resolve.

He chose two of his regulars to stand the first watch, and then he and the rest of his weary men pitched their tents and crawled into them in near silence.

She did not say any more after that, and it was a silent ride through the rest of the night and well into morning. Weariness was starting to pull at her, making her feel empty and worn, and her eyes were burning when at last they stopped to make camp.

It was almost nice to have no duties; the men set up the tents and unloaded the gear and she had only to stand and watch them. Devona found her half-asleep on her feet, and hustled her into the tent left for them. She was still playing along with their game, calling her Lady and tending to her like a nursemaid, and Mal slapped at her hand in irritation and frowned.

"Stop that. I would not have you be my servant, even in pretending." She was exhausted and, now, unreasonably angry, her voice harsh. Even under the best of circumstances she wouldn't have tolerated the show of servitude for long, and this was not the best of circumstances. "It is barbaric and you are as much a noble as I am. Speak for me, if you will, but I will not treat you like a slave."

With that she spread her cloak on the ground and curled upon it, her back to Devona. "You should sleep now, too."

Devona sighed and laid a hand on Malorik's shoulder. "I know this is difficult for you, Malorik, but we cannot afford for you to be difficult right now," she said bluntly, and unbound Malorik's hair. "I am a slave, and I say to you that to pretend to be your slave is no hardship to me. If you are my friend and you wish us both to be free, you will do as I bid you. You do not abandon your principles by lying to the mercenary captain." As she spoke she pulled her fingers slowly through the other woman's hair. "Now sit up and let me bind your hair for you. There is much we must discuss."

She was in the disposition to be difficult and angry and all manner of unpleasant moods, but she put it aside and sat up as Devona asked. It made her feel better to know that the other woman didn't resent her for the lies, even though that was all they were, and she sighed.

"I did not mean to be short with you," she apologized softly. "It is something I would not ask you to do, but if you think it is necessary, I won't fight with you about it anymore."

Devona chuckled quietly and ran her hands through Malorik's hair a few moments longer before beginning to bind it. "You need not apologize. To you it is a great shame to be a slave. For me it is an honor. We will talk of it another time." She made the first twist and brought in another section of hair. "He seems to find you amusing, Malorik. I have heard the men talking. Most of them speak a form of Prala. Some of them are warriors from the villages north of the Sleeping Mountains, and so is your captain. Three of them are not, and the others look down on them." She made another twist. "What did you say to him that made him laugh?"

She tilted her head to look at Devona, wearing a smile that was all teeth. "That I would very much like to cut off his head."

That got her a surprised look, and then a smile, and Malorik could not help but laugh. "He thinks he is so frightening, keeping my boots and trying to threaten me. He would not believe I would take his head up until the moment I did it, and still he would think it impossible." Her smile faded then, and she hesitated. "Devona? They will know we are nothing but liars once we reach Guildsport. How are we going to escape?"

Her fingers were quick and sure. "You are a noblewoman and I am your slave; if the mercenaries manage to hold us that long they will not kill you for being the wrong one," she said calmly, and tilted Malorik's head forward so she could continue her work. "You like him, don't you?" she asked knowingly. "The captain."

"It would not matter if I did," she said shortly, trying to answer the question without saying anything at all, but Devona was not fooled and Malorik knew that. She searched for another way to deny it without sounding defensive, but gave up, and sighed.

"Reno and I have traveled many places and I have always been the only woman. Merchants, rangers, mercenaries... they are like I am." She rubbed the heels of her hands into her eyes. "Had they not killed Reno, I would not hate them."

She bowed her head. "But he is gone, and even if I killed them all, it would make no difference. That is why it does not matter."

She bound off the end and tied it with a loose thread from her tunic and then crawled to sit in front of Malorik to inspect her work. "Very nice," she pronounced. "It will keep your hair out of your face and the sand out of your hair, and it flatters you." Malorik said nothing, and Devona put her own cloak over Malorik and embraced her briefly. "Now rest, my lady," she said gently, softening the title with a small smile, "and we will talk more tomorrow."

By now she was lost to thought, and only nodded dully when Devona gave her a quick hug and covered her with a cloak. The other woman lay down to rest, and Mal watched her, waiting until her breathing evened out and she appeared asleep before she draped the cloak back over her.

She was so tired that she couldn't keep her eyes open any longer, but sleep would not come, and it felt alien and hollow without Reno beside her. It had been easier to bury her grief when there was her survival to worry about, but now there was nothing but hours upon hours before the sun set, and all she could think about was him.

And for him she cried, for all those hours, silently and without stopping. Outside the tent the sky grew brighter and then darker, and when Devona woke to the sounds of the mercenaries moving about camp, Malorik was still sitting beside her. Her eyes were clear, and she even managed a wan smile.

"Evening."

Saul pulled the cork from his waterskin and drank sparingly. They'd made good time last night and they would ride hard again tonight, but they'd lost more horses than they had men and there were the women as well, and it would be another day at least before they could refill at the oasis.

Laro was waiting for him by the horses, and Saul hung the skin from his saddle and began tightening the straps. "Well?"

"There will be trouble," Laro said wearily. "Tatchi and Wexx. The other plainsman is indifferent. Rhodos shows an interest, but he'll follow you." Saul waited, and Laro continued reluctantly. "Vidon is angry, Saul. She killed his brother. He no longer cares about the gold."

Saul grimaced. "Then he no longer stands watch, not until we reach Guildsport and the bounty is collected."

Laro nodded. "And the others?"

"Break them up."

His second moved away from the horses and Saul finished with the saddle. Already these women were not worth the trouble. He understood Vidon's anger. It was honorable to die in battle, but what honor was there in being cut down by a woman? Vidon's older brother had been a skilled swordsman, a true warrior. It was unfair that he had met such an end, and unfair to ask Vidon to help escort his brother's killer across the desert unharmed, but Saul did not have men to spare to send Vidon on ahead.

He took the rations from his horse and headed for the noblewoman's tent. She and the slave were already awake and dressed, and he stopped for a moment when he saw her. She was standing next to her slave and regarding him coldly. Her hair was plaited back away from her face, and despite the dirt on her clothing and the ragged edges of the cloak he'd given her she looked every bit a noble.

"Your breakfast, my lady," he said sardonically. His anger at the trouble she was causing him made him impatient, and he pushed past Devona and held it out to her mistress to take.

Now she was past exhaustion, and it was a desperate sort of energy that kept her on her feet. She had waited for Devona to mention her lack of sleep, but if the woman noticed, she said nothing, and Mal was silently grateful for that. It was easier when she could ignore it, and when the captain stepped into their tent, she turned all that tired anger onto him.

He seemed in a foul mood, too, his voice holding an edge that it hadn't before. "Your breakfast, my lady," was all he said, thrusting the plate in her direction instead of handing it to Devona. Mal just looked at him for a moment before taking it from him, but she immediately passed it the other woman, her own tone challenging. "I am not hungry."

Saul narrowed his eyes. "Good." He took the noblewoman by the arm and dragged her out of the tent, and the entire camp saw him shove her hard toward the horses. There was a moment of silence, and then the pace at which the men were packing increased rapidly as they took down the last tent, though a few still watched. Vidon was the only one who didn't try to hide it.

The woman stumbled and caught herself and turned to face him, and for a moment he thought she might actually be ready to fight him there in front of his men, but then the slave was there speaking to her mistress is soft, pleading tones in that damnable Suna with her hand on the woman's shoulder. The lady glared at him while her slave chattered at her, and when he reached for her again she pulled away and he hit her across the cheek with the back of his hand.

It was a light slap but it didn't look it, and it made a good noise. The woman made no noise at all and her eyes had taken on a dangerous glow, but her slave cried out and tried to shield her and it had the desired overall effect. Vidon turned back to his work, satisfied for the moment. Laro met his eyes expressionlessly, and Saul pulled the slave off her mistress and pushed her toward him. Laro took the slave to his horse and Saul put the lady into his own saddle, and within minutes the band was once again in motion.

They rode through the night, and Malorik didn't say a single word.

She was seething with fury; hatred toward him for hitting her, hatred toward his men for seeing it, and hatred toward Devona for stopping her. If the other woman had not been there she would have fought him tooth and nail, and to allow his mistreatment of her without a protest was weak. It made her feel small and impotent and she hated him for that, too, so much that she burned with it.

Several times she nearly threw caution to the wind and attacked him regardless of the consequences. It would almost be worth injury or death, almost, but there was the chance that she would not succeed in killing him first, and it was not a chance she would take. There would be time, she told herself, once they were free, and she had her blades, and then he would regret touching her.

The sun rose, and they stopped, and she swept from the horse without so much as a glance at him. She wanted him to know that nothing he did to her would make him significant, and her eyes were cold and flat until she was safe in the tent and he could not see them.

You are lucky that she said no, and that I listen to her, sandrat.

Malorik made it through the ride without trying to gut him, and for that Devona was truly grateful.

She walked in behind Malorik and waited until the tent flap was closed and then reached out to unfasten the woman's cloak and stated the obvious.

"You are angry."

She whirled on Devona with a snarl. "Angry?! Why would I possibly be angry?! Bloody filthy bastard sandrat touches me again and you can forget this little game, Devona, because I will kill him, I will." Her tirade degenerated into a long series of curses then, in every language she knew, mostly involving skinning him alive and dragging him behind his horse and a few punishments that didn't even exist, and finally she ran out of breath. Devona just stood there and watched her, and Mal turned away with a hiss. "Desert filth," she growled in Brindian loudly enough to be heard beyond the tent, and tore off her cloak and threw it to the ground.

Devona knew better than to try to interrupt, and she waited until Malorik ground to a halt before attempting to speak again.

"You will not," she said simply. "You will not touch him in front of his men, Malorik, or he will kill you."

"As long as he were dead first, it would hardly matter," she said angrily, because she did not care to be reasonable. She knew Devona was right and later she might even be calm enough to admit it, but for now she was all fury and no good judgment.

Devona started to speak, and Mal waved a hand at her dismissively. "If you speak of it any more then I will do it right now, regardless of your counsel." She finally stopped pacing and sat down. "Tell me that I am a master of self control and perhaps I will wait another day."

"No," Mal muttered, sounding almost sullen. She had worked past furious, through angry, and was now mostly in the mood to sulk for an extended period of time. She was really too tired to embark on another rant, though she consoled herself with thinking it, and gave Devona a small smile with one last snide remark. "He hits like a woman."

Devona returned the smile and then grew more serious. "There is a man in this camp who wants you dead, Malorik. His name is Vidon, and he has made no secret of it. You killed his brother, the man who killed your cousin, and he wants your blood. There are others who want other things," she said with distaste, "but it will be Vidon who proves the true threat. He did not strike you in here. He pulled you outside and did it where all could see, so that Vidon could see you are nothing and not worth the effort of killing." Malorik was still looking away, but Devona knew she was listening. "He did not want to strike you, Malorik, and if you attack him you will force him to do worse."

Mal scowled. "I will not force him to do anything. It is not necessary to continue to remind me that I must disregard his insults and mistreatment for the sake of our safety." The last she said petulantly, tired of being chided like wayward child, but relented at the expression on Devona's face. She sighed. "I promise."

Devona pressed Malorik's hand and would have said more, but there were crunching footsteps outside. "And now he'll ask your forgiveness, my lady," she said quickly. "Make him labor for it."

The tent flap was pushed aside then, and the mercenary captain entered with their evening rations. He said nothing, but he looked at Malorik and she at him, and Devona knew this was out of her hands.

Forgiveness was the last thing she wanted to give to him, but she bit her tongue and met his gaze as he entered. He said nothing to her, and so Mal let her eyes show nothing but disinterest, as if she were looking through him to the wall of the tent, and then made a gesture toward the plate he was carrying. "Take your meal, Devona."

He continued to look at her with an unreadable expression, and she continued to stare flatly past him until he eventually handed the plate to Devona and stalked out. His retreat made her feel triumphant, for some reason, and she gave the other woman a smug smile.

"Now I am hungry."

Saul brought them safely to the oasis before the day was well started and pitched camp. It was a meager streamlet of water and the pool that should have held the collected runoff had been muddied by the recent sandstorm, but it was enough for the horses and the men to drink and to fill their flasks and skins. Tatchi made the casual suggestion that perhaps the women would like to bathe, and Saul laughed and asked after Tatchi's wife, and the subject was dropped. They had a long road to run yet, and he didn't want them spending their strength on the women when they should be riding or sleeping or standing watch.

Vidon did not join in the laughter. The boy had been easy to like before, clumsy and good-natured and eager to follow his brother's shadow. Now when his work was done he sat and spoke to no one. Saul watched Laro try to engage him and fail, and decided that if the boy showed no sign of improving tomorrow that he would speak to him.

The hair on the back of his neck stood up, and a few moments later so did Laro. The others looked up from their seats and the conversation died as the tiny vibration grew strong enough for all of them to feel. Saul cursed under his breath and turned in place, but Laro was the first to spot them, a band of eleven or twelve clansmen, and Saul cursed again, more loudly, and swung up into his saddle. His men were scrambling for their horses as well, and they had enough time to mount and draw their weapons before the desert people rode into their camp.

They found the tracks just before dawn, nine shod horses traveling northwest from the Desert Road, headed for the boundaries of Clan Freyet's lands. Lok and his men rode hard, following the tracks without rest. The power of the clan was entirely dependent upon its authority within its lands; Lok understood this, and knew that violators could not be allowed to escape and pollute Freyet's proud reputation. They came upon the intruders' camp while the sun was still low in the sky, and found them awake. Lok barked an order for his men to draw their swords, and pulled his horse to a stop. He did not dismount to meet the intruders' leader as an equal; the men he faced were not clansmen, and see no hospitailty from Lok.

"Who violates the sovereignty of the great Clan Freyet?" Lok called out. "Show your token of passage or cut your own throats! It will be a cleaner end than we will give you if we must make examples of you to all trespassers!"

Saul nodded to Laro, who dug into his satchel as if to produce something, and made a quick appraisal. They were eleven to his eight, their horses fresh while his were spent. The tents were out; to abandon the camp now would be the death of them, even if the Freyet didn't catch up to them, and the woman and her bounty would be lost. This had to happen quickly, and before the leader grew tired of his second's show Saul jumped his horse forward. Laro and Verol were behind him, and they hit the clansmen before they could cluster together.

Saul caught one of them across the throat, but there his easy luck ended and he was driven back by two of them with ready blades. One of them cut into his arm and he hissed in pain and turned his horse. The next blow landed on his horse's shoulder. The animal screamed and shied away and another slash missed his neck. He yanked the reins around and his wounded mount stumbled back toward the enemy, and he swung his sword low and gashed the other rider's horse across the face. It reared and threw him, and the hooves of Saul's horse trampled him into the dirt before he could gain his feet.

The second clansman was a short distance away engaged with Laro. There was a stiffness to his second's movements that made him kick his horse harder than necessary, and he ran the man through and shoved him off his horse to clear his blade. Laro was still in his saddle, and Saul did not have time to examine him.

Wexx and Rhodos were still on their horses and three Freyet faced them. Tatchi was on foot and faced two of the desert people also on the ground. Saul urged his bloody horse forward and took on one of the horsemen. The other man was frightened and exhausted, and Saul brought him down quickly. Wexx had dispatched one of the remaining riders and was assisting Rhodos with the other. Saul heard a cry and looked the other way to see Tatchi disarmed and on the ground before the last clansmen with no horse. They were too far for Saul to save his man, but he dug his heels in anyway. The pair approached with agonizing slowness and the clansman drew his arm back to bring his bloody blade down on Tatchi and paused. His body jerked and he fell, and behind him the Lady Malorik yanked the two clan shortswords out of the corpse and brought them up to guard herself. Her slave stood behind her.

Saul pulled his horse up. The clan was gone, and the men's eyes were all on the noblewoman and her swords. She met his eyes and she was smiling, an angry, vicious smile. Saul dismounted and walked toward her steadily with his eyes locked on hers, stopping within range of her weapons as if he were unafraid. "Drop them," he said coldly.

They were in their tent and talking softly when the sound of shouting drew Mal's attention, and she immediately stood and slipped to the door. A quick glance outside showed the mercenaries quickly mounting their horses, and she moved to get a better view and noticed the approaching clansmen. It would be the Freyet, and judging by the angry voices, they were not pleased to find them camped in their desert.

There was a pause, and then chaos began, mercenaries and clansmen alike drawing their swords and charging in to fight. Mal looked back at Devona, and then walked out before the woman could convince her otherwise.

It was not a difficult decision to make, but a matter of the lesser of two evils. If the Freyet won, they would kill her and Devona. If the mercenaries won, then everything would continue as before, and they would have their chance to escape. A little voice added, And then we can kill them ourselves, and Mal took two short swords off a nearby corpse and waded in.

The battle was nearing its end, but one of the Freyet had a mercenary down on the ground and unarmed, and was preparing to finish him. Everyone was shouting and there were too many men riding around on horses for her to know if someone else would reach him in time, so with a curse she threw herself forward. The clansman had his sword in the air when she thrust both her blades into his back, and by the time he fell she was grinning.

The man on the ground stared up at her, and she would have said something, but the captain rode up and swung off his horse. Mal turned her attention to him, still with the smile on her face, the smile that reminded him that she was as dangerous as he. Her eyes shone with it as he approached her, and they were only a few paces apart when he stopped.

"Drop them," he said, and her smile grew.

And now you remember that I am not simply some woman to disregard. Perhaps you will not forget it again.

She let the silence hang between them, her gaze steady on his for a long, long moment, and she raised an eyebrow at him but lost the grin. Then, finally, she threw the swords down at his feet, and took a step back, her eyes still on his.

The swords fell to the ground, and the noblewoman's slave put a hand on her shoulder and sought to guide her back into the tent. After a long moment she broke eye contact and went, and Saul let his eyes pass over Tatchi without seeing and looked at the rest of his camp.

The quiet plainsman Amel was dead, a sword still lodged in his chest. Verol lay unmoving on his stomach, and when Saul turned him over blood trickled sluggishly from his slashed throat. Tatchi had a minor leg wound, and Wexx and Rhodos were nicked but relatively unharmed. Laro was still in his saddle and lay over the head of his horse, and Rhodos helped Saul take him down. He'd taken a sword in the side; it was an ugly wound, and the blood that came from it was deadly black. Laro was senseless and water did not wake him; still, Saul had Rhodos clean the wound and bind it while the others dismantled the camp. Vidon rode in on a lathered horse while Rhodos was at his task, leading another animal behind him. One of the riders had taken flight and Vidon had given chase. None of the eleven Freyet clansmen had survived to report their presence, but Saul would not stay here at the oasis for more to come and wipe them out.

Saul had Vidon round up the horses. They had twelve beasts and only seven riders, but of those twelve three were too injured to be of use and they were all too exhausted to run. He had the men redistribute the packs between the animals and instructed Rhodos to make a travois out of one of the tents for Laro. Rhodos said nothing and Saul knew it was hopeless, but he would not leave Laro behind while the man still breathed. The dead men they left where they lay. Saul would not announce their survival by digging graves.

When all was ready he gave the women their boots back despite Vidon's poisoned glare. Tatchi, too, cast an angry glance at him, and Saul held the other man's eyes until Tatchi looked away. He looked at the horses to see which one Rhodos had chosen to attach Laro's travois to and saw him folding and packing the tent instead. Rhodos met his eyes and shook his head. Saul said nothing, but walked to the head of the line and took the bridle of the first horse there. Rhodos took the second. The womens' hands were tied together with a length left at the end, and Saul led the noblewoman and Rhodos the slave. The others led two horses each, and the mercenaries left the remains of their camp on foot.

The rope chafed around her wrists, and he had tied it tight enough that the tips of her fingers grew numb if she did not move them often. Mal chafed under it, too, under his leading her like a horse when she had saved one of his men, and not for the last time did she regret it.

They would have won, regardless of her assistance, and she should have seen that from the beginning. It would have been better to let the Freyet whittle down their numbers, leaving fewer men to guard her and more opportunity to escape. She tried to console herself with the thought that it would have been pointless anyway, that she could not kill five or six men on her own and that they would have simply killed her instead, but she knew that there might have been a chance. They were wounded, tired, unexpecting. There might have been a chance.

It was that thought that kept her gaze forward and down. Mal did not want to look at Devona, to see what the other woman thought of her now. She did not want to look at the mercenaries either, and it did not take looking, anyway, to know what they were thinking.

I kill your men and save your men and they still die, regardless, because you should not have taken me. She glanced up briefly to stare accusingly at the captain's back, trying to reclaim the angry triumph that she'd felt during the brief battle. And I would have stood a chance.

They camped several hours from the oasis, and when he knew the women could walk no farther he let them stop. The men were totally silent while they pitched the tents, a grim silence that suggested many things were not being said. Laro had always been the one to tell him what the men were thinking; Rhodos was not Laro, and Saul felt ill-equipped to confront them. Tatchi had suffered a great humiliation at the hands of the noblewoman; to mention it would be to shame him further. There was Vidon who still grieved for his dishonored brother, and Saul could think of no conversation that would ease the tension in his ever-shrinking group. Rhodos had accepted his silent promotion to second and that was well; beyond that Saul could not plan. He only hoped that they would make Guildsport before his band grew any smaller.

He set Rhodos on first watch with Wexx and took the second himself with Vidon, hoping the younger man would speak while the others slept. Vidon said not a word, though his anger appeared to have cooled a bit. Vidon had been with Saul for three years, longer now than any that had survived, but he was still the youngest of the remaining mercenaries. Wexx and Tatchi were plainsmen, but Vidon and Rhodos were from the same network of villages scattered within the Sleeping Mountains that Saul was. Vidon's older brother Nolen had been a good friend, and Saul had allowed Vidon when he was little more than a boy over the objections of his men and his own misgivings. The others had grown accustomed to treating him as the least experienced, and it occurred to Saul now as he sat watch with Vidon that he might have judged him too harshly. Vidon had not complained that Rhodos had taken the place of second, and his grief over his brother had worn on him. Perhaps he could still make this right.

The next evening when the horses were rested and fed he gave the horse that had belonged to the noblewoman's guard to Vidon. It was a fine animal and Vidon accepted it gravely. They had horses enough now for all to ride, and so the women were placed on horses of their own. Saul gave the noblewoman's reins to Vidon and the slave's to Rhodos, and there was a measure of satisfaction in Vidon's eyes that gave Saul some hope.

They loaded their heavier supplies on the horse with no rider. The travel was faster and more comfortable than it had been since they'd taken the woman, and for a few nights after things were quiet.

The next few nights passed without event, and they were silent nights, full of wordless travel and quiet work. Devona did not mention the battle, and Malorik said nothing to encourage her otherwise. She preferred the silence.

Instead, she spent the nights lost in thought. It did not escape her notice that the captain had given Reno's mount to the man whose brother she'd killed, and it would have infuriated her, but she was too tired to care. She had reached some sort of exhausted apathy, that made her indifferent to what would happen now and what their future held for them. It was a dangerous state to be in, this lack of concern for self or safety, but Malorik did not act on any rash ideas, and so the time went by without conflict.

One morning she woke, and turned to look at Devona. The other woman was always the first awake in the mornings, always the first ready, but today she was huddled beneath her cloak. Mal sat up and laid a hand on her shoulder, and then shook her gently, but the only response she received was a quiet moan.

Something was wrong.

Immediately she was in front of Devona, looking her over and trying to wake her. Her skin was cold and clammy, and she appeared feverish, her face flushed and yet pale underneath. Finally she opened her eyes, and when she struggled to sit up, Mal helped her and then covered her with her own cloak. "I'll get you some water," she said reassuringly, and was almost to the tent door when the captain walked in.

"She's sick," she said without preamble, and was surprised to hear the distress in her own voice. He said nothing, and she decided that she did care, that it did matter to her what happened to them, and she reached for his hand. "Please. She's sick."
