Winnat stared in disbelief as the girl Raspeth removed the arrow from Riham's chest. He could see the energy she was expending as the flesh around the arrow seemed to soften and melt, allowing the vicious metal head to be pulled out. In his exhaustion, Winnat was unaware of the passage of time, until she turned to him, looking weary.

Agar shifted against him, his flesh cold and clammy. The wounded man was in shock, his system withdrawing upon itself in an effort to conserve precious blood. He did not have the energy to focus his eyes, though he was aware that he had been moved into a tent.

The man was ashen under his dark skin, his pale brown eyes unfocused, and Raspeth moved Winnat's hand gently from his cousin's wound. His cousin's hands were harder to move, and though blood loss had made him weak he was still stronger than she. In the end she had to relax his arms so she could move them and draw his robes away from his stomach.

The wound was deep and ugly but uncomplicated. He'd lost a lot of blood, and a good deal of it had soaked into his clothing where it would be difficult for her to utilize it. She was tired now, and there wouldn't be enough to heal him if she had to hold him still at the same time.

"What is your cousin's name?" she asked Winnat.

"Agar."

She looked down at Agar. "This may hurt and he will try to move. Hold him still." Winnat nodded, and she pressed Agar's limp hand with her own and then began to mend.

Agar awoke and struggled as pain streaked across his wound. Forgetting about honor and machismo, he moaned in agony and struggled to get away. It felt like spiders crawling into his flesh, and he was very unnerved. Someone was holding him down, someone he eventually identified as Winnat. His cousin's face looked grim and tired, and he did not smile as Agar focused his eyes on him.

Slowly he looked down at his wound, fearing that he would see great desert spiders crawling from him as if he were a broken, infested vessel. Instead he saw the little princess hovering over him. His skin crawled as he realized she was using magic. He twisted violently but Winnat was prepared for it and he went nowhere.

"Stop her!" he croaked, his throat parched. He could not understand why Winnat was letting her do this to him. He gasped, trying to catch his breath, but panic was on him. He twisted once more, but knew he was too weak; the weakness seemed to fall over him like a blanket, and it brought darkness with it. He fell dizzily into oblivion.

Raspeth kept her hands on Agar's abdomen and her focus on her work despite his weak movements, but his groans of pain and his plea pierced her concentration. She almost lost her place and forced herself to slow down. By the time she was done he was unconscious and she was not far behind him. Sweat soaked her clothing and she closed her eyes and took a series of deep breaths, and when she opened them Winnat was regarding her with an unreadable expression.

"I am sorry," she said tearfully, "I am sorry, Winnat." She wasn't sure what she was apologizing for, but Agar was not awake for her to apologize to. Winnat looked down at his cousin and she wanted to get up and leave to let them be alone and found that she did not yet have the balance.

"He should have water when he wakes," she said dully, "and something sweet." Winnat didn't look up, and she pulled herself away from the cousins without really standing and then sat down at the other side of the tent near Riham. He seemed to be sleeping peacefully, and she made herself sit straight up, concentrated all her focus on it, and said nothing more.

Cale watched the girl's ordeal from Riham's side. His friend had long since drifted into a deep sleep by the time she returned. Raspeth was unsteady even sitting, and Cale rose and helped her to her feet. Outside, someone had taken the responsibility of calling for tents to be pitched, though the number of men standing around without jobs suggested that not many were occupied. Cale steered Raspeth for the nearest and led her inside, finding it empty. While she lay on one of the mats, Cale left to fetch water. She drank greedily from the bowl when he returned.

He sat next to the bed for a few moments. He was unsure whether she was awake or asleep. Cale said, "You have done great works this day. Rest, child." He left the tent.

Cale addressed the men outside, reporting that both Riham and Agar would live. Spirits rose considerably with that news. He tasked out assignments so that everyone had something to be doing: three men to finish unloading the camels, three to forage for whatever food could be found in the area, and four to help Cale build pyres for their fallen compatriots. Cale had never in his life lost so many men on a single journey, not even when he was young and careless. Twenty-four had left Guildsport; now fifteen remained.

The scrub and deadwood collected would not be sufficient, so Cale ordered that trade goods made primarily of wood be broken down and added to the pyres until they had enough. Profit had ceased to concern Cale. He only prayed that he could bring the survivors through without any more deaths. Then the bodies were carried and laid out. Two were clansmen, so the riteswere all too familiar to Cale. But the third man was the foreign ranger who had accompanied their passengers, Reno, and Cale did not know the customs of his people. So Cale spoke for him as he would any clansman, hoping that the man's spirit would understand.

Then the torches were set to the pyres, and the fires burned well, and the bodies were eaten and the spirits released. Cale did not linger; it would not do for the men to wonder about the state of their leader. It was almost dawn, and Cale ordered his men to bed down for the night. There were enough extra tents now that Raspeth could be left to herself.

Cale did not sleep. He walked, following the tracks of his enemies' horses, studying. Soon the heat of the day would come, and the marauders would surely camp. One horse remained with Cale's caravan. He could catch up.

Raspeth woke up alone in the tent and sat up quickly, wondering where the others were. Pain flared behind her eyes, and she winced and put her hand up to shield them from the weak light that had managed to penetrate the tent. When she held still it was only a dull throb, and she carefully massaged her eyelids until she thought it was safe to open them again.

It was bright outside, midmorning. Reno was dead. Devona and Malorik were gone. There was no one left to share her tent, and so she was alone. Then she remembered Riham and Agar, and Agar begging Winnat to stop her. Devona had told her that there were people here that did not know of magic and thought atacre just some precious gem, but she hadn't realized how someone who did not know what it was might react. She should have taken the time to explain. She should have spent less of her strength on Riham. She should have ignored him and finished faster and saved him the suffering.

She lurched to her feet. Her head already felt better; she dimly remembered Cale giving her water before she slept, and her eyes only stung slightly when she stepped out of the tent and into the brilliant desert morning. The sky was a pure blue, empty of any relieving clouds, and she shielded her eyes and looked around. There was no one outside, or almost no one; a single figure crouched some distance from the camp, beyond the slowly smoking pyre that she chose not to examine too closely.

Her intent had been to go to Agar and apologize, but now she realized that Agar would be sleeping. Everyone was sleeping but her and the man out on the sand, and she did not want to be alone. It was Cale, and as she approached he was looking at the sand, and she looked where he was looking and saw nothing.

"What are you looking at?" she asked timidly.

Cale looked up when Raspeth spoke, and pointed to the dark spots in the sand where blood had dripped. "Their horses are bleeding. At least two." Cale gestured toward a place farther along the path where the spots appeared too far apart to have come from one animal. "Not seriously, but it will slow them. They will have to stop before long to tend to the horses, and they will still not make good time. They will probably not sleep today, but they will have to before long. I know this land; on Malorik's horse, with minimal supplies, I can catch up and follow them until they are asleep."

It was a stupid plan and Cale knew it. There would be men assigned to keep watch, not one but two, or possibly more. Cale could follow them forever without being detected, but he would never be able to sneak into their camp to steal back the women.

The look on Raspeth's face forced Cale to look away. He said, "I gave my word to bring you and Devona across safely. She put her trust in me. I am nothing if my word means nothing."

Raspeth swallowed her panic and listened to Cale gravely. He wanted to take Malorik's horse and try to get Devona and Malorik back from the raiders by himself, when the whole camp had not been able to save them from being taken. His bravery was frightening to her. Raspeth had been travelling for what seemed a long time, months and months with no one but Devona for steady company, and this man with his quiet, angry resolve was the first person to mention his word as if it was something to fight for and not something to pay with. He didn't want to go, but he would go because it was the right thing to do.

She would not let him go. She could not. Her cowardice shamed her, but she could not let this man die too, not even to save her only friend.

Women are only taken. Men are killed.

"Devona told me when we left that it would be dangerous," she said quietly. "She said...that if we were ever in danger that I was to run away, I was to save myself and that she would find me. She said that men don't kill women like her, and that she would find me and take me the rest of the way to Lahkis." She looked up at Cale. "Do you think they will kill her?"

Cale kept his back to Raspeth, still studying the tracks as if there was anything left to learn from them. "No," he said. "They will not kill her. But she would have a difficult time finding her way back to you. You will probably not see her again.".

Cale did not have the heart to contradict her. He did not know how old Raspeth was or how much she understood about what would happen to Devona, but he would not be the one to educate her. Cale gave up staring at the tracks and sat down. "What you did in there, with Riham and the boy -- you have always had this power?" He tried not to sound accusing, but he made no particular effort to be gentle either.

It felt odd to stand over him, and so she sat down too a short distance away and shook her head. "Several masters taught me at a school for many years, and I did not complete my training," she replied a trifle reluctantly. Devona would not like that she was speaking about her past, but Cale had already seen her perform magic. It seemed pointless to keep the details from him. "The power is not in me. It is in the atacre. Without it I can do nothing at all. I had a necklace that had a small stone set in it for my use, but Devona made me give it to her the night we left Guildsport. I don't want your stone," she added, a small defensive note in her voice. "If...if I need it again I will tell you."

He said nothing for a time and she looked out over the desert. It was once again a barren, dangerous place to her, and she looked back at the man who wasn't frightened by it. "Why do you do this?" she asked him softly. "Aren't you afraid of dying?"

The girl sidestepped his implied question entirely, and Cale decided not to pursue it. He did not understand the ways of imperialist magic, nor did he wish to. In response to her question, Cale said, "In Guildsport, a man can be killed for his boots. The desert is civilized. It is the outsiders that bring savagery to this place."

She did not nod because she did not understand, but she did not contradict him. Outsiders meant her and Devona and Malorik, perhaps all people who were not clan, and though his tone did not suggest it she felt reproached. The sun was higher in the sky now, and it reminded her that she should be sleeping while she could. "Do you think the bandits will come back?" she asked. "Riham and Agar should rest if they can. They both lost blood and need water and food to make more."

Cale turned to her, and she felt guilty for asking him. He looked older and more worn than he had yesterday, still determined but immeasurably weary.

"We will stay one more night," he said with finality, and Raspeth nodded. She wanted to take his hand or to otherwise reassure him, but she felt now even more than she had before that he would not welcome it, and that it was not her place. She walked back toward the tents and gave him his privacy instead.

She slept fitfully. It was strange sleeping alone after growing used to the others, and when she woke it was still light outside. A few of the men were moving around the camp. She looked for Cale and spotted Winnat instead.

He stood outside the tent where Riham and Agar had been like a guard, and as she approached she saw the dark shadows under his eyes that his brown skin did not conceal. He looked at her blankly and said no word of greeting, and her resolve had almost deserted her when he moved aside enough to let her pass. She slipped inside before he could change his mind.

Agar had awoken from an awful nightmare, to find himself alone in an unfamiliar tent. There was a bowl of water and a small pile of dried fruit beside him. He fell upon them immediately, withought thought. He felt worse than when he had drunk too much alcohol one night in Guildsport. As he moved, a tight line across his abdomen pulled uncomfortably. In a flood of memory, he looked down at the pale line across his stomach and shuddered.

The girl Raspeth slipped into his tent and he looked at her fearfully for a moment before masking his emotion.

Agar looked up at her with fear in his eyes and Raspeth's heart tugged at her. The fear disappeared, but she approached no closer and knelt on the floor a few feet from him. She wanted to apologize now, but she couldn't decide how to begin. Her eyes flicked to the empty bowls and then back to his face.

"How do you feel?" she asked gently.

"Fine." he replied immediately, automatically. He remembered what had happened, despite his weakened state. He did not want to thank her, but she had saved his life. He suspended all other feelings for a moment, so that he could speak.

"Thank you."

He savored the temporary numbness, but almost immediately his fear and distrust returned, along with the faintest twinge of guilt. He had never been indebted to anyone before, except perhaps Winnat, but he and Winnat owed each other so many life debts they had stopped counting.

He watched the girl now, wondering if she had come to demand payment, or merely gloat in her triumph. Being beholden to a woman was something he was loathe to tolerate.

She twisted her fingers into the edge of her tunic but forced herself to meet his gaze. The expression on his face was so unlike the others she had seen from him, so straightforward, and she smiled at him tentatively when she could see no reproach in his eyes. "You're welcome, Agar," she said at last. "I did not mean to cause you pain." She looked at the thin line across his abdomen. It looked well-healed, though a more experienced mender would not have left a scar.

Muscles moved under his skin, and she realized that she had been staring and that he was a man and only half-clothed, and she felt heat creep into her skin and looked down at the floor. "You aren't in any discomfort?" she asked quickly.

He saw the blush rise in the little princess' cheeks. "My head hurts." he said disingenuously. He was willing to put aside his dislike of magic for a moment, and find out exactly what this girl thought he owed her. Though it irked him to do so, he felt that a forthright question would be best.

"And what do I owe the little princess for this?" He could not help slipping in a little cynicism.

Her head came up and she met his eyes, but he was unreadable to her again. His words stung her, but she tried not to show her hurt. Cale had reacted the same way; the prevailing opinion of foreigners seemed to be that payment overrode all other concerns. No doubt Agar had met the same kind of people.

"You owe me nothing, Agar," she replied firmly. "I am your friend, and I need no payment from you."

He wanted to take her at her word, only because he wanted it to be true. He did not trust this little witch, but then, he didn't trust many people at all. Never women.

"Your generosity matches your great beauty, princess." he said, forcing himself back onto familiar territory - the hunt. "But I fear I am weary." He stretched across the pallet, realizing as he did so that it was not a feint; he was exhausted. He was uncertain of how to proceed, and so smiled weakly at her; he was not used to smiling.

He called her beautiful and smiled at her, a real smile even if it was a little pale, and he was too obviously tired for her to be nervous of him. She nodded and smiled back, and she took his bowl and dipped more water for him from the jar that the men had left. "This will help your head," she said quietly and moved closer to hand it to him.

He sat up and reached for the bowl, and his fingers brushed hers. He was not sure what he had expected; a tingle or a clammy dampness, perhaps. But she was as warm and as human as he was. Still, it did not dispel his distrust or fear. He barely controlled a shudder, and the water in the bowl rippled slightly.

"You are most kind, princess." he said, and drained the bowl. As he reclined, he felt his abdominal muscles shift smoothly. "And most talented as well." he said. The compliments were more tiring than anything; he desperately wanted her to leave so he could be left alone with his fear and mental discomfort. He did not want to frighten her away, though. At least, not yet.

His fingers touched hers, warm and smooth, and she bit her lip. His throat moved evenly as he drank the water and when he lay back and met her eyes again she could not hold hers steady. Why these things should affect her this way she did not know, but it embarrassed her and made her want to leave and yet to stay.

"Rest now," she said to the floor, and then fled the tent.

Riham took another draught of cold water and his headache receded a little further. He was seated on a large rock near the edge of the camp and had been for almost ten minutes; he was still weary and felt like he'd run for hours with no water and no rest, but he felt much better outside than in the darkened tent. The air was stronger and the wrap he'd brought with him kept him from chills, and the afternoon sun felt good on his face.

He was turning over in his hands the small atacre stone he'd found in the dirt next to his pallet and thinking, and when he saw Cale walk nearby with a look that said he was searching for another task to assign he called out to him.

Cale almost walked right past Riham before his second caught his attention. Riham was looking much better than when Cale had last checked in on him; his color was returning, and he was obviously able to walk and sit upright. Cale took a seat beside his friend. "You had me worried, Trahn. I thought I was going to have to return home to my daughter with nothing but bad news. You need to be more careful with yourself."

Riham grinned at Cale. "One moment I was reaching for my sword, the next I was staring at the stars and thinking that myself." His grin faded and he looked past Cale at the remnants of the funeral pyres. "Who was lost?"

Cale briefed him on the state of the caravan and the theft of the women, and grew more weary than he had been. His hand clenched into a fist around the atacre, and he looked down at it and opened it again. He saw that Cale was also looking at it. "I found this next to me when I woke up," he said by way of explanation.

Cale nodded. "It was Devona's payment for passage. Another was to be paid upon arrival in Lahkis." Looking at the stone only reminded Cale that he had not earned it, and could not anymore, so instead Cale looked at the piles of ashes.

"For her and the girl," Riham said aloud, not to correct Cale but to remind him that the task had yet to be completed. "The girl, Cale...what happened? I do not remember clearly. It was not a small wound, that I do remember. And the girl."

Cale accepted his second's reminder without comment. "I have seen imperialist god-powers used before, but never like hers. She pulled out the arrow, and no blood followed, and then the wound vanished. For once I am glad to see that the power of the gods has not left this world completely."

Riham swallowed and found his mouth was dry and took another drink of water. His impression of the girl had been slight, save that she was a disruption to the caravan and to the Dahro lads. She seemed well-meaning in a clumsy way, tagging along after Cale when she thought no one was looking, and more than once Riham had made gently teasing comments to his employer about it. Imagining her as someone with power, the power to save his life, was disconcerting.

"As am I," he replied and pulled aside the edge of his shirt to look at his shoulder. "There is only a little mark to show where it was. I will thank her when she wakes up."

"You should," Cale said, standing. "Keeping the men busy through the night is going to be plenty of work in its own right. Rest, drink, eat, and recover; we ride tomorrow night." Cale left Riham, returning to the camp.

Winnat brought Agar a bowl from the cooking fire, and they sat in front of their tent, silently watching figures move against the firelight. There were less than there had been several days before, and there would have been even fewer if the witch Raspeth had not intervened.

Agar idly ran his finger along the thin white line that stood out agains the tan skin of his abdomen. He was caught between revulsion, gratitude, and fascination.

"See if she will eat with us." he told Winnat, who was tiring of hearing Agar's thoughts on magic and how they could benefit from learning the little princesses secrets. Nevertheless, the other man rose again and circled the fire to reach the girl.

"Agar would like... we would like you to join us if you wish." he said to her plainly. His joy of the hunt had been ruined by the realization of the truth in Cale's words. The girl was owned by him and he had used her as efficiently for the good of his caravan as Winnat himself would use a knife for skinning meat. He had to respect that, and honestly, somewhere deep in his heart, her witchcraft made him shudder. That she had god-powers seemed too unnatural for him to accept. He did smile at her, though, and spoke evenly and kindly.

Raspeth took her meals alone now. It felt like presumption to try to eat with the men. Riham had thanked her and he was courteous enough to her and sometimes she sat near him, but for the most part the man whose company she desired showed no inclination to share it with her.

Agar had been in her thoughts often, but she'd found herself at a strange distance from the cousins since the battle with the mercenaries. They gave her odd looks and did not seek to speak to her, and Raspeth felt hurt without knowing why. She went over the events in the tent when she and Agar had spoken and he had called her beautiful, looking for what she might have said or done to alienate him. Perhaps she should not have left; perhaps he had wanted her to stay and was angry because she'd left without saying goodbye. It was confusing and it frightened her a little. Devona was gone, and though Cale appeared to be willing to escort her to Lahkis anyway, she had no friends but the two cousins and their censure hurt.

She had just begun to eat when she saw Winnat get up and walk toward her. His face was not welcoming until he reached her, but then he made his request and smiled and she smiled back and stood up and followed him to where Agar sat. When they were settled she could not keep from flicking her eyes to the wound on Agar's stomach, partially visible through his loosely wrapped clothing.

"Thank you, Winnat," she said gratefully and then turned to Agar again. "Hello, Agar," she said with another shy smile. "How do you feel?"

Agar's lips stretched into a thin smile for a moment, as if he were pained. "I am well, thank you." he replied. "Have you been eating alone these last few days? Really, you should have come to sit with us. We rarely bite." His eyes met hers and narrowed slightly, and he grinned at her as a fox might. There was an odd sort of light in his pale brown eyes as he gestured for her to take a place next to him.

She chuckled softly at his joke at he and his cousin being animals she would not want to eat with, though she got the vague impression that he might have meant something else by it. He touched the ground next to him and she shifted her position to sit next to him. His yellow-brown eyes caught the firelight and she looked into them for a few seconds too long and took a breath and smiled at him again and looked to Winnat. She did not want to be rude, not when they seemed to wish to make friends again.

"I am glad you invited me." Her happy expression faltered a little. "It is quiet with the others gone."

Winnat seemed to thaw, and then launched into an amusing tale about a miner they had known in Guildsport. Agar listened for a moment, but had heard the story countless times before. Instead, he turned his attention to Raspeth. She had broken eye contact with him as if she were uncomfortable, but her body was slightly angled towards him, rather than away. He was amused by the way she always tried to seem cheerful. He wondered why she even bothered, when she had god-powers and could undoubtedly do as she pleased. He had seen the power in her, but also the shapelessness of her personality. She was young and could undoubtedly use a mentor to guide her.

Agar unconsciously leaned towards her with his eyes half closed. He could almost smell the power in her, and he let go of his fear and superstition in favor of desire.

Raspeth listened to Winnat's story as they ate. She had never seen a mining camp, and even the little details that seemed of no consequence to Winnat in his telling were interesting to her. She laughed at its conclusion and turned to Agar and found him far closer than he had been. Raspeth's laughter caught in her throat and she looked up into Agar's shifting eyes. She could smell his breath and his skin, and the expression on his face made her feel weak. They were close enough for her to feel the warmth of his body and she wanted to move closer and to flee. Instead she remained where she was and said his name in a soft, questioning voice.

"Agar?"

It was Riham who noticed and gave warning. Raspeth was dining with the Dahro boys. Cale nodded, finished chewing, and set down his plate. He walked to the nearest water jug, giving him a view around the corner of the boys' tent of the situation. Raspeth was just finishing scooting over to sit next to Agar. Cale filled his metal cup and drank, then refilled the cup. He walked back toward his seat near the fire and past, drawing the attention of a few of the more aware members of his crew. They could watch; Cale was not concerned any longer for the boys' egos. He walked around the far side of the tent shared by the Dahro boys and Riham, so that he approached from behind the boys. Raspeth might have seen him, but she and Agar were leaning in close to each other and she was clearly not aware of him.

Cale stopped, and tossed the water from his cup on Agar. It was not cold enough to make the effect complete, but it got their attention. "Dahro," he greeted, without any of the levity he used when addressing Riham in such a fashion. "What's going on here?"

Agar sprang to his feet as Cale doused him with water. He clenched his jaw against his initial reaction, which was to reach for his blades. Winnat stood more slowly, but made it clear that if this was to turn into a fight, Agar would not be alone.

"I was unaware that your property could not at least choose where she eats. You do her no such courtesy." He kept his voice under control, though his clenched fists betrayed his temper.

"We were just telling her stories about Guildsport." Winnat interjected calmly. "Nothing to offend her delicate ears."

"I saw differently," Cale said.

Riham had wandered over. His movements were calm, casual, like he didn't want to miss seeing any drama. Cale knew better. Other men from the cook fire were standing now, and a few from around the curve of the tent had edged over to see. Cale knew his men well, knew how to read them. They were not happy with the way this journey had gone, but most of them were still firmly behind him, and those few that weren't would go where the consensus carried them. The Dahro boys would find no support among the crew if they tried anything.

"Raspeth," Cale said. "I will speak to you later. Go wait by the camels."

Raspeth stood hastily when the cousins did, brushing water droplets from her face.

"I was unaware that your property could not at least choose where she eats," said Agar evenly, but she could tell he was angry. "We were just telling her stories about Guildsport," Winnat explained, and she nodded in agreement but Cale was not paying attention to her. He was looking at Agar.

"I saw differently. Raspeth," he said without looking at her, "I will speak to you later. Go and wait by the camels."

Her first impulse was to simply do as she was told, but her guilty conscience won out. "If I have done something wrong," she said in a small voice, "then it was my fault." He glanced at her and she realized that retreat was no longer an option, and her voice gained strength. "I came to eat with them of my own accord."

"Do as I say," Cale said, his voice more forceful now. He kept his eyes mostly on Agar, not willing to leave himself exposed to a surprise attack. But he glanced once more at Raspeth and saw her looking at the boys with concern. She moved away then, walking without hurrying in the direction of the camels. Cale returned his full attention to the boys.

Anger and tension was written into every line of Agar's form. Cale was not totally sure what to expect from the boy should he attack. It would be ridiculously stupid to draw a weapon; he could kill Cale if he was fast enough, but he would be cut down by the men immediately after. His best bet would be to try to fight Cale hand to hand, without Winnat's help. If the fight was fair, Cale's men would not interfere. Cale could see how Agar might think he could take this aging caravan leader, past his prime and no great warrior even in his youth. But Cale hoped the boy wasn't stupid enough to try his luck. Cale had only grown harder with years. He had learned to fight in the gutters, and it was in the gutters that Cale fought wherever he was. Agar was shamed enough as it was; if Cale had to lay him out he would never again be useful to the caravan for anything but the most menial supervised tasks. And yet, if he attacked, Cale would have no choice but to win, whatever it took, to maintain the respect of his men. Cale could walk away, and would lose no status with his men for it, for he had nothing to prove here. But Agar, and Winnat to a lesser degree, needed to be resolved one way or another tonight. Leaving the boy's anger to fester would be the worst course of all.

"You looked like you needed cooling off," Cale said to Agar, though he made sure everyone could hear. "You still look like it." Cale glanced in the direction Raspeth had gone. He said, "Obviously I didn't make myself clear when we last spoke, so let me put this plainly. You work for me. You don't choose which of my orders you follow; you don't choose anything. If you don't want to work for me, you can leave. We have more camels than we need. I would even give you one as payment for the work you have performed. You need only say the words. Do you wish to leave, Agar?"

Agar stared at Cale with hatred in his eyes, but did not move. It looked as though he were hardly breathing. Winnat was not quite as still; he shifted slightly as the tension grew.

Agar refused to dignify Cale's possessive tirade with an answer. Instead, he deliberately taunted the man by turning and entering his tent. Winnat held his breath as he waited for Cale's reaction.

The boy turned and retreated into the tent, leaving Cale's options severely limited. Technically, Agar had backed down, but even in doing so he had shown insubordination and insolence. Nothing had been resolved. If Cale let it go at that, it would weaken him, make him look like he was relieved to grasp at any resolution that did not involve conflict. Agar was forcing Cale's hand.

It was clear that Agar, and probably Winnat too, would have to leave the caravan. There were any number of tactics that Cale could use to humiliate the Dahro, but to what end? If the boys were going to be useless, they might as well be out of the way. Cale's first instinct was to do as he had offered, give them camels and send them on their way. But there was danger in trusting the boys. Two camels loaded with only provisions would make much better time across the desert, particularly if they did not stick to the Desert Road. Traveling ahead of the caravan, the boys would have plenty of opportunity to make trouble. However tenuous their claim to being desert clansmen, they looked the part. If they wanted to take revenge on Cale, they would only need to find a band of raiders desperate enough to hear lies about a wealth-laden caravan not far behind them. They could have every half-extinct clan from here to Lahkis waiting for a chance to wipe Cale's men out.

The hate Cale had seen in Agar's eyes would not let him discount the possibility, and so Cale could not risk the lives of his men by letting the Dahro boys go on ahead. But what alternative did he have? Cale was not prepared to kill Agar without stronger provocation. What was left.

The men were watching him. Winnat was watching him. Cale found a compromise that he could live with. "Agar has made his choice," he said. "Anyone else that wishes to leave may join him." Cale looked obviously at Winnat as he said it. He was counting on the boy to follow his cousin regardless, but he wanted to be sure. His plans depended on both boys leaving together. "He will have one camel and enough supplies and toll goods to reach Lahkis safely."

Now was the dangerous part. Cale hoped that he had judged the boys correctly, and that Agar and Winnat would leave together. With one camel between them, they would have to trade off and could only travel as fast as they could walk on foot. They would need twice the provisions, but it would slow them down sufficiently to keep them from overtaking Cale's caravan. But if Winnat stayed, Agar would cover ground much more quickly, making him a danger. The only thing that might protect them from slaughter then would be Winnat's presence, and if Winnat chose to part with his cousin then Agar's familial favor could not be counted upon.

Cale waited for Winnat's answer, knowing that if it was not as he hoped, he would have no choice but the blade.

Winnat's eyes narrowed slightly as Cale deliberately misinterpreted Agar's action, but he did not correct the older man. After an uncomfortable second, Winnat looked away.

"I will go with him." he said clearly, and nodded slightly to Cale. He then entered the tent to gather his pack.

The boys broke everything down as usual, and when they were finished, found that a camel had been separated from the rest. There was a bundle of supplies and a smaller package next to it. Without looking at anyone, they arranged their belongings on the beast and set off on foot, Agar leading the creature. He resisted the urge to make one last statement, or to look for Raspeth. His posture was alert but not stiff as the small group left the camp, following the road into the fading light.

Raspeth watched from next to her camel while Agar and Winnat went into their tent. Cale said something to Riham and Riham approached the camels. Raspeth shrunk back a little, but Riham only looked at the camels and then led one away. A few moments later she saw Agar's tent collapse as the cousins packed it up. Cale had moved away and she wanted to go to them, but he had not said she could come back yet and the two men were busy with their preparations for departure. When they actually began to walk away she understood that they were leaving alone and not returning, and Raspeth wanted to call to them. They passed her but did not look at her, and she thought better of it. They were angry, they were leaving because of her and because of Cale. The least she could do would be to let them go without causing any more grief.

She watched Agar's back until she couldn't see him anymore and then sat in the sand at her camel's feet. Her eyes stung and she rubbed at them with the edge of her tunic sleeve and waited for Cale to come tell her it was alright to move.

The boys had been on foot for several days now. Of unspoken accord, they let the camel carry the cargo but no passengers. Agar refused to ride as an implicit apology to Winnat for getting them kicked out of the caraven, and Winnat refused to ride because Agar would not ride. They both knew this and were comfortable with it. They had travelled this route on foot before, and no matter what Cale thought, were both well-versed in the ways of the desert. It had been their first playground and they respected it.

Entire days went by without words being spoken; the camel's grunts and ruminations were more frequent than human conversation. Agar's thoughts lingered on the caravan initially, but faded into analysis of the girl Raspeth and her powers. She was a fetching little princess, completely innocent, but still managed to wield godlike abilities. The thought of holding such power in his own hands brought a tingling to his flesh. If it was not to be learned, perhaps those who held the magic innately could be possessed. Agar's visions of the possession of Raspeth distracted him for quite a while.

Winnat amused himself as he often did by composing epic lyrical poems, then forgetting them by the next day. He often told himself that if he only could write them down, someone might appreciate them, but in these harsh lands, stopping more frequently than necessary often spelled death. After a few days, he switched from poetry to music, and his incessant humming was thankfully lost in the constant whisper of the wind.
