Emotions Legend
Kat (Oct 11, 2004 09:51 p.m.): She'd been waiting for it, waiting for the inevitable darkness with tired patience, but it still surprised her when it came. Every night since that first night she'd played a game with the lights, daring herself to stay out later and longer, trying to overcome her fear and sleep alone, but she always gave in. Every night since that first night she spent in his room, and every morning she woke up angrier at herself than the last. It wasn't that she resented his silent acceptance of her weakness; no, it was her own dependence on his protection that bothered her. He never offered it, and she never accepted it, but it was there nonetheless. She stayed, and he let her. She shouldn't have stayed. But lights out came, and as always, she stood and began the journey to his room. It felt longer each time, but she still hugged the shadows, still watched everything with a wary eye, and she was still relieved and comforted when she slipped inside. He was waiting up for her, and that made her suddenly, irrationally furious at him for the small gesture. It made her feel like a child, like she was incapable of protecting herself, and she clenched her hands into her blanket and scowled. "What, am I past my curfew, dad?" For a moment he just blinked at her, and then his face darkened, and her scowl turned into a glare. "What?" he asked her, and the edges of her canines showed as she bared her teeth at him. "What?" she mocked him, trying to get him to react. It felt safer to be angry than to be grateful or happy or comforted to see him, and her smile was wide and sharp. "Are you waiting for something? Hoping I wouldn't come back?"
