Emotions Legend
Remus (Feb 09, 2005 05:27 p.m.): "We have been investigating the whereabouts of the stolen box," said Theolus. "We have reason to believe that it did, in fact, leave Guildsport on Alaran Cale's caravan." He sounded casual about it, but the investigation had been exhaustive. Learning that the box retrieved by the mercenary had been a deliberate decoy was easy; the difficult part was tracking the real one. He'd had to trace the path of the decoy box back to its origin, a Suna spy who had lived in Guildsport for over a decade. During her interrogation, the spy revealed that she had gone to a local courier agent named Varn, who made arrangements for the box to be carried across the Vesari to Lahkis. Though torture had been necessary to loosen the spy's tongue, Varn responded nicely to bribery. He had names: Malorik and Reno. The descriptions given matched two of the passengers on Alaran Cale's caravan as described by his agent, Doren. Somehow the couriers had hooked up with a pair of Suna fugitives fleeing the city, and had attached themselves by means of generous bribes to the outgoing caravan. The mercenary had brought back two women with him according to Panaki, and not the right two if Theolus' informants were right. One fit Malorik's description, and so Theolus had a man attend the auction earlier that morning so that they could arrange an interview with her owner. Interestingly enough, that owner turned out to be none other than Saul, the mercenary who had brought her in. Whether the mercenary was attempting some kind of scam or not, Theolus was not sure. But it was a sure thing that if he had the box already, he would not have returned to Guildsport. Wherever the box was, Saul could lead them to it. "You will accompany us across the desert to Lahkis," he said. "You will help us locate the box. In the desert, you will act as guide and interpreter to ensure that our passage is not impeded." He paused a moment before adding, "And you will bring your slave, the courier woman, so that she can advise us as well."
