Emotions Legend
Solenis (Jan 29, 2005 05:33 p.m.): Raspeth flinched a little when the caravan leader brought the sword down on the ranger's neck. There was blood, as there must be from an injury like that, many great jets of it as it searched for the channel through which it was meant to flow. No one stepped forward, no one said anything. Raspeth felt Devona's restraining hand on her arm was unnecessary, and then felt ashamed because of it. Cale's speech was harsh but it made sense to Raspeth, and despite his choice of words she knew better than to think they applied only to the men. She watched the caravan leader walk back toward the front of the line and wondered if he would kill her if he decided she was a danger to the group. She and Devona were too far away from anyone who might wish them specific ill to find them here, but there were other reasons she could think of that might cause him disquiet. She wondered if he felt guilty for killing the ranger. He walked past her and she could see his face. He looked angry, not guilty. Why would he look angry after he killed someone and not before? He's angry because he feels he had to and he didn't like it, she thought. That made sense too, and it made her feel sorry for him. Cale moved out of sight and she looked back and watched Riham binding up one of the other men. It hadn't occured to her that they might have taken damages from the bandits, and she looked at Devona. Devona shook her head, and she gripped the saddle again and set her gaze to the camel in front of her. After a few more minutes, that camel moved and hers followed, and she didn't look back for some time. When she did, all that she could see to mark their passage was the distant glow of fire and the dull, thick shadow of smoke.
