Remus (Jan 29, 2005 05:43 p.m.): The three days following the battle passed slowly for Cale. Greth'has, the man with the wounded leg, tried to hide that he was sick, but it was not long before he was unable to ride further. The caravan lost half a day's travel while Riham did what he could for the man's fever. Cale stayed nearby, but he had little knowledge of medicine beyond first aid and could do nothing to help. Usually, when a man was as sick as Greth'has and without any chance of recovery so far from civilization, Cale would ask him if he wanted assistance in ending his life painlessly. But the necessity of killing one of his own men only days before made Cale reluctant. Finally it was Riham who led Cale out of the tent and asked if he would prefer that Riham make Greth'has the offer. Cale had known that Riham meant no offense, but he had been unable to answer the man then. He turned back into the tent and knelt beside the dying man's mat. Greth'has was only partially coherent, but he welcomed an end to his pain. Cale poured for him a cup of alcohol mixed with snake venom. As the man's heart slowed, Cale closed the man's hand around the hilt of a sword laid across his chest -- custom for men mortally wounded in battle but not killed outright among Greth'has' people. A pyre was built for the him, and though it was far from the field of battle which had claimed his life, Cale knew that Greth'has had been a good navigator and would find his way to his paradise. To make up lost time Cale drove the caravan on into mid morning, when the column of smoke could no longer be seen.
