Barging into the infirmary with Wick cradled in his arms, Nicolai shouted hoarsely, trying to get someone's attention, voice frantic and eyes roving wildly around the room.

"Medic! We need a doctor, someone!"

Making his way to an empty cot, he laid her gently onto the pillow, still holding her as he glanced down into her pale bloodied face, unable to look at her other injuries. That arm... burnt and black, flesh crisp... how could anyone do that to her? Nicolai felt a sudden surge of guilt, thinking that perhaps his stolen kiss had incited Jor's rage so much that he would almost kill Wick. His own anger rose at the thought, as he felt defensiveness for this girl and for himself. If Jor had done this... Jor was going down.

A doctor rushed over, and with obvious fear, Nicolai told his story hurriedly. "Doc, I smelled some smoke in the storage bay, and went to look inside... I found her like this, someone must have put accelerant on her arm, you can smell the petrol... I think her shoulder is dislocated, and her ankle's broken, oh God, is she going to be okay?"

He didn't answer immediately as he hurried over to examine the girl.

She was breathing, but very, very pale. She didn't appear to be actively bleeding except from her split lip, but there might be some internal injuries he didn't yet know about.

"Nurse, I need an oxygen mask and some surgical scissors, please." He maintained his calm demeanor, glancing up at Nicolai as he pulled on sterile gloves. "She's not in any immediate danger that I can spot yet. Why don't you have a seat? I can give you a more detailed analysis in a moment." Gerard Muraida never spoke down to the soldiers. He'd been a military doctor for nearly fifteen years and had seen a lot in his tour. This boy was concerned, and he respected that. Age was irrelevant, as long as they stayed out of his way.

As the boy took a seat, he pulled the curtain and took the scissors from the nurse and began cutting the charred material of her uniform away from her arm. The material took burnt skin with it as often as not, and even he winced a little as he pried the last of it away. This wasn't the first escharatomy he'd done, but it was one of the uglier burns. He'd dealt with fuel burns before, but this one was uncommonly even and centralized, no backlash to the torso or face. Intentional. His eyes narrowed as he worked.

Once they had her arm in cold compress gel that would help to slough off the burned skin so the nerve regen units could do their work, he started a more thorough examination. The rest of her uniform was much easier to get rid of, and the doctor raised an eyebrow involuntarily. The huge blossoming bruise on her stomach drew his immediate attention, but the uniform paleness of her skin led him to discard the possibility of internal bleeding as pretty unlikely; still, he sent the nurse to start the battery of tests anyway before he moved her collar out of the way again to examine the bruises there.

Bruises mottled her throat and neck. A few looked like finger marks, but the great majority appeared to be some sort of biting injury. There were more further down, some older than the others, but most fairly fresh. She couldn't have been lying where this boy had found her for very long, but there was no telling yet how long it had taken her attacker to do this much damage.

He injected her with a painkiller sedative before he examined her ankle. The boy waiting winced as he put her arm back into her socket with a practiced twist. The arm break was clean and easy to set. The ankle was a bit more complicated, and the nurse came back with the necessary x-rays to show him the compound fracture. The tissue damage didn't indicate smashing. Maybe twisted. Minor surgery to remove the bone fragments would have to be scheduled for later. For now he immobolized the joint to prevent further tissue damage and had it elevated.

A cursory pelvic exam confounded more than it explained. There were signs of recent intercourse, with accompanying small traces of blood that could indicate any of a number of causes, but her uniform had been undisturbed. Unless her attacker had taken the time to re-dress her... but he took cultures and put them aside for later examination.

Sighing, he covered her with a sterile sheet, stripped his gloves and pulled the curtain back enough to let himself out and approached Nicolai.

"She's going to be alright. Can't make a determination about the arm yet. How long ago did you find her?"

The overwhelming relief on Nicolai's face was plainly evident as he sighed. The doctor had said she'd be alright. She'd be alright. Nicolai had to sit back down in his chair again, closing his eyes briefly, then looking up at the doctor.

"I just found her when I brought her in. I don't know how long she'd been there... I mean... her arm was still... smoking. It was in the storage bay, the door was off the track to kinda lock it, thank God I managed to get in. Will her burn be okay? Can I stay with her please?"

The doctor nodded absently. "Yes, of course. But if you want to sit next to the bed you'll need a sterile mask. Burn victims are very susceptible to infection. Before you go," he said with a kindly smile as the boy got up, "I do have a few more questions for you. Do you know this girl?"

Eager to see Wick, Nicolai rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly, glancing toward her curtained bed before looking up at the doctor.

"Well, kinda... her name's Moira Callenstrom, if that helps. We've talked and everything, I know some... uh, what do you need to know?" His thoughts flashed back toward Jor, the enraged betrayed look he'd given Wick when he'd stolen his kiss. Nervousness twinged in Nicolai's stomach as his gaze unwillingly roamed back to Wick.

He studied the boy's discomfort with hidden curiousity. "I need to know if you know her well enough to tell me who might have done this. Did you see anyone leaving before you came in?" He seems honestly concerned, he thought to himself. But I've seen the type before.

"What's your name, son?" he asked as an afterthought.

Nicolai's gaze shifted back toward the doctor uncomfortably. "Nicolai Ivanovich Mishkin, sir. Phoenix Quad. Actually, I..." his voice trailed off as he heard a soft moan from beyond the curtain. Glancing up at the man with startled eyes, Nicolai pointed uncertainly in Wick's direction. "Didya hear that, is she awake?"

The doctor turned and pushed back the curtain, heedless of the boy following, and blinked at the girl.

Eyes the color of deep ice stared blankly at the ceiling. As he watched, the girl blinked slowly. The tip of her tongue reached out to touch her split lip, and her brow furrowed slightly, but her eyes never altered.

"Moira?" the doctor said gently. He had given her enough painkiller to put her out for an hour. He couldn't believe she was awake.

The world was choking smoke, and the fire wanted air, and fought to the surface to breath it in deeply. She let out a small noise, somewhere between a sigh and moan, as that breath came out painfully.

Her stomach felt like a mass of swollen heavy tissue, painful when she moved or breathed. Everything else felt numb, like she'd been shot through with novocaine. The white ceiling above her came into focus, the sterile infirmary tiles making the florescent light seem that much brighter. Curiously, the light caused no discomfort.

Her lip felt...wrong, when she touched it with her tongue, but not completely disfigured. She could still feel air cold against the skin of her face, her uncovered right arm.

Her left arm felt nothing. Nothing at all.

The fire pondered this as she breathed again, and then a voice to the side, out of her visual range, said, "Moira?" Moira...oh, yes. The girl. They wanted to speak to the girl. The fire smirked, the lax muscles in her face making it difficult, but she said nothing.

Still frozen in place as the doctor moved to check her vital signs, Nicolai stared transfixed at Wick for a moment, until he found his lethargy broken. Hurrying to her side, he looked down into those glacier eyes, his own bright blue eyes clouded with worry and a sense of... fear. If Jor had done this to her, imagine what he might do to him.

Leaning closer, his head tilted slightly as he watched her face carefully, those eyes focused on the ceiling. Catching his breath, he whispered. "Wick?"

Checking the girls vitals, he hid his surprise at the girl's nickname. Wick? The name seemed horribly apt to this particular situation. The girl couldn't have done this herself, could she? There was no way she could have inflicted the other injuries, but the fire...he'd seen stranger things.

It seemed unlikely, and he filed it away for later reference.

"Who did this to you, hon?" the doctor said, a little more steel slipping into his voice than he had intended. This girl had been very badly injured. He would like to be instrumental in catching whoever had done this.

The fire swallowed.

An uncomfortably familiar presence was beginning to form in her mind, and she didn't like it at all. Wick was supposed to be gone. Wick was dead, and the fire was free. Why did she suddenly feel so...trapped?

The edges of her awareness suddenly bowed and broke, and Wick was pulling her down again, away from the light and the air she craved so badly and forcing her down into the tiny place inside she'd endured for so many years. She screamed and fought back, but the pressure was inexorable and she howled her rage as she was shut away.

Outwardly, her body trembled as Wick asserted control. She took a big, gasping breath, and then another, as her eyes came into focus, and gradually travelled over to the doctor. He'd asked her something, something about who'd done this to her.

She wasn't dead. There was still time to save Jor.

"Mode.." she managed before the light carried her away and she fell unconscious.

The doctor studied the girl in fascination as she fell unconscious. Mode? She had obviously suffered some sort of mental trauma. The smirk was enough to indicate that she would be in need of some evaluation before her recovery could be announced complete.

Nicolai's rapidly paling face made him look at him sharply. "Do you have any idea what she's talking about?"

Nicolai paled at Wick's one word. Mode. Asmodeus. The boy whose files Rox had hacked into earlier, just a few hours before, the boy who they'd all thought was after Dante. Nicolai knew enough about the fight back at BattleSchool to piece together his thoughts; but the memory of Jor's anger still gnawed at the edge of his mind. He just didn't know who to believe.

Clenching his jaw, Nic tore his eyes away from the now unconscious Wick, and he coughed before speaking. "Uh, she means Asmodeus. A guy called Nathan Terrence... he's a Charybdis probie..." He made a shift toward Wick, returning his gaze to her. "Will she be alright here? I need to, uh, report back to my commander, he'll wonder why I've been gone."

If Nathan had indeed been the one to do this to Wick, Nic would find out. And if it was Jorry... well, God help the boy. Nicolai didn't like to see his toys broken by another...

"Yes sir," Nicolai managed as he gulped, then turned to leave. Rabin came rushing in as he was just about to exit, and shooting the other boy a wary, all too familiar glance of dislike, Nic pushed past and left.

And started running the second he hit the corridor.

Rabin hardly glanced at Nicolai as he entered. He didn't need to. He knew what Nicolai looked like. What interested him was the smell. The scent of burnt flesh was on him, but only the faintest traces of the chemical, clinging to the boy's clothing.

What that meant was that Nicolai had carried Wick, but hadn't been anywhere nearby when the chemical was used. Not that Rabin had suspected him in the first place. Rabin already had a pretty damn good idea who had done this.

Nicolai was out the door before Rabin could ask him any questions. No matter. He could find out what the flashboy knew later. Right now he was worried about Wick.

The curtain was pulled around a nearby bed, but Rabin didn't ask permission. He stepped to the bedside and drew back the curtain.

There she was.

Rabin didn't so much as flinch when he saw the arm. He'd seen bad things in his lifetime. This was not the worst. But it was bad. Very bad. And the others Rabin had seen, they had been dead already. Wick was still alive. She was going to have to live like this.

His face went hard. Rabin's face rarely went hard. When it did, it meant that somebody's days were numbered.

And it was not a big number.

The doctor looked up just as he sent finished sending his report when the soldier came in. He said nothing, watching as he went directly to the curtain around Callenstrom's bed and stared.

He could only see him in profile, but even so, the boy's face hardened as he looked down at the girl. Was this another friend? Perhaps someone who could lend a bit of information?

"Can I help you, soldier?" he said from his desk, studying the boy curiously.

Rabin continued to stare. His face didn't shift at all as he replied. "No," he said, softly. "I doubt you can."

He then let the curtain fall back into place, and strode from the infirmary, fists clenched tight. It was time to go have a talk with a certain veg Rabin had seen around. Time to go have a nice, long talk.

Dante stalked into the infirmary, a mask of icy resolute calm on her features, while the torment in her eyes belied her control. She beelined straight for a curtained partition, drawing it aside, but nothing could prepare her for what she saw inside.

Wick... her arm a mass of black charred tissue, IV lines and nasal cannula from her nostrils, tubes everywhere. She was reminded of her own surgery, her own injuries inflicted by Nathan... and for the first time, Dante felt some sort of compassion for Wick, for this girl who'd schemed against her. Not for long, however, her coldsilver eyes sharpening as she tiptoed to her bedside and shook Wick lightly on her hand.

"Wick, wake up right now..."

Wick was half awake when a touch made her open her eyes.

She felt unfocused. Sedative and anesthesia from her recent surgery made her dizzy and nauseous, but she was barely able to keep her eyes open, let alone try to throw something up. She focused on the person before her, vainly hoping that Jor had heard what happened, come to see her.

Dante...

And she looked viciously angry. Wick tried to remember if she'd done anything specific to her since her arrival, but nothing came up. Her mind wasn't whirring like it was supposed to, and her frustration was beginning to mix with fear as she blinked glacier eyes at her former commander.

Dante dropped into a crouch as Wick's eyes opened, her mouth near the girl's ear as she whispered furiously, hot breath against Wick's cheek, Dante's own eyes narrowed in mercurial rage.

"You sent that letter to me, you little bitch... framed Nathan because you knew we were together... you and Jor, well where is Jorry now, eh? He wasn't there to save you from Nathan, you got what you deserved for ruining our lives... c'mon and say something, Moira..."

She grabbed Wick's wrist suddenly, digging her nails in. "What do you have to say now, pyro?"

Wick's eyes widened.

Dante had spoken to Asmodeus...and against all odds, had believed him. After the condition he'd left her in, she'd have thought Dante wouldn't want to go within ten feet of him without an armed escort.

She sure as hell didn't.

Still, despite the dull pain in her wrist that the painkillers let through and the strange numb feeling in her muscles, Wick managed a smile. Her eyes went from Dante's face slowly over to her crumpled uniform that the doctor had left on the chair after they'd cut it from her. After focusing on it long enough to make her point, she looked back to Dante's face, her smirk growing more wicked by the second.

Jor hadn't come to see her. There was no way he couldn't have heard by now. That he hadn't told her exactly how little she had to lose, and she wanted more than anything to see Dante burn for her now, before one of her little friends decided to kill her.

Wick didn't respond, only glanced pointedly at her bloodied uniform, crumpled in a nearby chair. Furrowing her eyebrows in angry confusion, dante released the girl's wrist and grabbed the shirt, examining it. Something tinkled lightly, delicately inside, and with growing disbelief Dante dug her hand into the breastpocket and pulled forth an object.

Her amulet.

Her protective charm she'd given Nathan that night... and she remembered the soft smokey look in his eyes, his sudden blush and kiss as he left... and then the next day, the letter, the fight, everything lost. Her love, her life torn apart by this one little girl. Wick.

She'd lost Nathan once, thought he'd never forgive her. There was no way in hell she'd let that happen again.

Dante's soul froze as she watched Wick through narrowed quicksilver eyes, her rage so tightly coiled that she had to clench her jaw, teeth gritting as all her muscles tensed. She wished that Nathan had killed Wick, had killed Jor... or else had killed her that day, so that she wouldn't have to live to see this. Her icy psyche wouldn't let her grovel at Angel's feet, not after what she'd done, not after what he'd done... but perhaps something could be reconciled, and she could live her life again without broken dreams of him haunting her sleep.

Dante only hoped.

She didn't even bother to speak to Wick, just shot the girl a glance of pure hate, pure malice, a look so frozen that she almost trembled in hatred. Then with a flash she turned, fiery curls swirling, and ran as swiftly as she could out of the infirmary.

And back to Nathan.

Wick glared after Dante's retreating figure in hopeless frustration.

Banked.

How was that icy bitch always able to keep her temper? Usually she considered that sort of restraint to be a weakness...but she'd watched Dante fight it, watch her hold it in by sheer force of will. She knew that battle well, but she liked giving in, liked to feel the flame consume her.

Dante had mastered hers long ago.

She let her eyes fall closed. She felt empty, half-dead. Jor was gone. Dante was gone. Soon Mode was truly be gone, and then maybe...maybe she could be gone too. So tired...

Dante's flaming passage through the corridor past him did not escape Jor's notice, but neither did it do anything to distract his attention from the rapidly approaching infirmary entrance. Barging inside, he looked around wildly, eyes finally settling on a curtained partition that remained ominously closed.

Wick...

Rushing over, he yanked it aside forcefully, almost ripping the material from its hook. She was inside, nestled into a cot, surrounded by an overwhelming array of machines... tubes and needles running everywhere. Catching his breath, he watched her fearfully, her eyes closed in her pale face, bruises and blood still marking her. Her burnt arm made him wince painfully, greater anger at himself rising within as he thought of how he could prevented this...

But her chest was rising slowly with each breath she took. She was alive. Wick, his spark, his love... had survived.

And to Jor, it was the greatest sight he'd ever seen.

Silently padding over to her bedside, he reached a tentative hand down, lifting the fingertips of her left hand gently as he leaned down and kissed the paleflame coral ring still encircling her finger. Part of him broke, his eyes running over her, watching her wince with pain every time she took another breath. Kissing her fingertips, he squeezed them gently, whispering in a hoarse, strained voice.

"My spark..."

The fire was taunting her with bad dreams when a voice and a light sensation brought her around.

She fought to open her eyes, but when she finally succeeded, she almost couldn't tell. Everything seemed dark and bubbly. That couldn't possibly have been who she thought it was.

Jor leaned closer, bring his face nearer hers and watching as her eyes flickered open weakly, his melting forest green gaze meeting her unfocused glacier blue one. He smiled then, broadly, his eyes crinkling a little at the corners as he stared into her and sighed in relief.

"Yes, it's me, I'm here, Wick... what happened, oh God, I'm so sorry I let him hurt you, I didn't know... I love you..."

"Love you too...match...did they get him?" The desperation that worked into her drugged vocal cords made her words a little slurred with urgency as her eyes tried vainly to focus on him with no success. "Did they get him, Jor?" Her voice was more stringent. She had to know, had to know if Jor was safe or if all had been for nothing.

Jor closed his eyes at her question, resting his lips again on her fingers as he sighed heavily. But she was struggling, needed to know something that drove her enough to stay conscious, and he wasn't about to deprive her of that.

"I... I don't know, Spark. But I swear, if they haven't already they are soon, and I'll stay here with you, I promise I won't let him near you again..." He almost cried in desperation, watching her fight to breathe, words slurred as she forced herself to speak. Jor wasn't sure if she'd heard him, her eyes flickering closed again, and so he steeled himself to lie, to try it as a last resort. "Yes, Wick. They got him. You're safe, we're both safe. Now sleep, I'll be here..."

"Jor..."

It was all she could manage to say his name before her vocal cords began to ignore her orders and shut down. They caught him. Jor was safe, and that's what mattered.

Wick closed her eyes and drifted away.

The doctor waited until the girl's heartbeat monitor told him she was asleep and then stepped out from behind the curtain.

The boy seated there had curly black hair and wide, tortured green eyes, and was looking at Callenstrom like he was suffering more than she was.

"I think she's out, son. Do you know this girl?" he asked gently.

Still completely entranced with watching Wick as she slipped asleep, it took Jor a moment to register the doctor's question. Glancing up at the man with startled eyes, Jor nodded silently, momentarily unable to speak. He returned his gaze back to Wick, brow furrowing in thought as he sighed quietly to himself and squeezed her fingers.

The doctor appraised him for a moment before talking. The boy gave every evidence of being a distraught friend. Perhaps more.

"I see you're in a different Quad. Are you friends? I believe she's going to be alright, but she's had a rough time of it." He kept his voice gentle and understanding, but his eyes narrowed a little bit. His grief had a sheen of guilt to it, and he wasn't sure what to make of it.

He set a copy of his report down on the small table next to the boy. "I'll be right back. I have to get something from the lab. You can stay here if you wish, but try not to touch her. Burn victims get infections easily." He walked away, into the little lab and out of sight. From there, he watched through the holocam as the boy slowly lifted the chart with a guilty glance towards the lab door.

Slowly withdrawing his hand from Wick's at the doctor's last comment, Jor watched as the man left, walking into the lab a distance away. Without a second thought, he reached for the chart on the bedside table, casting a quick guilty glance in the direction of the lab door before returning his attention to the report.

His eyes narrowed as he read the damage Nathan had wreaked upon his spark, jaw clenched and face hardening slightly. Once again the guilt and helplessness came; he could have stopped this, could have kept her safe and secure. But it wasn't until he read the last two items on the list that his face paled and his green eyes widened. Bruises and bites... Jor looked at Wick's throat, reaching up an idle hand to rub his own neck. And then... "Possible evidence of sexual assault."

Shit.

He almost threw the chart back onto the table as he hissed quietly to himself, moving closer to Wick without touching her as he watched her carefully. His eyes closed as he leaned against the cot, his cheeks oddly paled under his tan, his teeth gritting as he thought of the implications the doctor's report might bring. Sexual assault. It hadn't been like that, hadn't been anything like that...

The doctor watched as Jor's face went from helpless rage to angry nervousness as he finished reading the report. Interesting. He'd heard the boy speaking to her before, and the words came back to him.

"Yes, it's me, I'm here, Wick... what happened, oh God, I'm so sorry I let him hurt you, I didn't know... I love you..."

Had there been more than one? Was the girl protecting this one for a reason? His machine beeped as it finished analyzing the material he'd taken from Callenstrom, and he turned away to look at it.

Positive result for recent intercourse, with internal and external bruising typical of non-consent. Positive identification of Petrol 5 as the accelerant...but no skin under the girl's fingernails to indicate that she'd fought back. Perhaps she simply hadn't had the chance. He reached down to the little control panel and activated the magnetic lock for the infirmary door.

He came back out to the main room. The boy was still standing there, his face pale, his eyes wide again, but now with raging fear instead of worried suffering.

"Jor, isn't it?" he asked the boy, his voice now colder. "You'd better have a seat."

The doctor's tone allowed for no argument, and with a nod, Jor sat down in the chair adjacent to Wick's cot. He had to keep his jaw clenched tightly to stop from losing his control, his eyes trained on Wick, almost oblivious to the doctor in front of him. All he could think of was Nathan... Nathan attacked her, setting her on fire, the cold-hearted bastard. Jor felt his own rage rising again, irrational as he looked up at the man with serpentine flame in his eyes.

The doctor watch the boy sit down, his jaw tight, glaring at the girl on the bed.

This was beginning to look worse, but the doctor wanted to be sure before he summoned the MPs.

"How well do you know Moira, Jor?"

Moira? His eyes narrowed slightly in muddled confusion before he made the connection. Wick. The man was talking about Wick. Fighting back his rage, Jor sighed quietly and looked down at the floor.

"She's... she's my... girlfriend, sir."

He wasn't quite sure what the doctor might be hinting at, although realization was beginning to dawn on him. That he might be blamed for whatever sexual assault the man thought had been committed. Unless... unless Nathan had done something. No. Jor refused to believe it, looking frightenedly at Wick. His heart sank, and he reached out a hand to brush the ring that still encircled her finger, before he remembered that he wasn't allowed to touch her. Dropping his hand back into his lap, he steeled himself for whatever the doctor was going to ask him next.

"I see. I saw you looking over the report. Does anything strike you as...odd... about any of the details there? This boy Nathan seems to be a pretty vicious type. Can you think of any reason why he might have done what he did? Beatings aren't entirely uncommon here, but rape is a different issue." Jor winced at the word, but he continued inexorably. "While the beating this time was particularly severe, the addition of that charge will undoubtedly ice the perpetrator...or perpetrators...and send them to earth for sentencing and imprisonment. What reason would this Nathan have to risk that by beating up your girlfriend?"

Jor winced as the doctor mentioned rape, but the man kept talking, rambling on about Nathan, multiple perpetrators. Wait. Could he possibly think that he, Jor, would have raped Wick? But what if Nathan had... one of hands clenched into a fist in his lap as he stared up at the doctor with burning eyes.

"Did... did Nathan... rape Wick? He's hated us for years, we... we got in a fight with him back at BattleSchool, he was iced and sent to that Institute, then he showed back up here, I knew he was going to do something, but..." It was almost a relief to finally tell someone, and with a flicker of hope that perhaps Nathan could be iced, once and for all, Jor plunged onward, angry now. "Did he rape her? Tell me, shit no one has told me anything about what happened, I just heard she was hurt and I come to find this! What the fuck happened to her, he fucking set her on fire!"

He stood from his chair, glaring at the doctor, irrationally angry and out of control. "What are you insinuating? That I would do this to her? Just come out and say it, I want to know what happened now!"

The boy was convincing, and the doctor's tone became a hair more mild. Maybe he was just what he appeared to be, a distraught lover...but if so, why the nervousness over the last of the report? If anything it should have made him even more angry, more determined.

"That remains to be determined. The strange part is that there is no direct evidence to indicate a struggle...but the girl is badly bruised, internally and externally. Her throat and upper torso have quite a few bruises and bite marks. Are you and...Wick...active, Jor?" Wick. He would have to ask about that as well. It was entirely too coincindental, the Petrol burn and her nickname.

That last question caught Jor slightly off guard, and his cheeks flushed as he averted his gaze from the doctor's, running his eyes over Wick's neck again before rubbing his own throat nervously. Badly bruised? He was confused... it hadn't been forcible, even as she was rough with him, but...

"Yes, sir, we are."

He nodded once. It wasn't his job to comment on the lifestyle practices of the soldiers. It was his job to attempt to piece together what had happened. "When was the last time? And why does she call herself Wick?" The more he thought about it the more that name disturbed him.

Jor backed away from the doctor and sat back down into the chair, his eyes still locked on Wick as he responded absently to the man's questions. "Yesterday... for, uh..." he trailed off, then bit his cheek inside to force himself to continue. "For the, first time, sir."

His eyes ran over her again, glancing down at the ring, rimmed with coral flame, so much like her. Wick, all full of fire and spirit. He wasn't quite sure why the doctor wanted to know about her name, but he glanced up at the man and answered. "She was in a bombing back on Earthside, burned her whole arm... this same arm, right now. I dunno, she's always so... fiery, the name just fits, I guess. Wick." Jor's eyes gleamed with almost crazy possessiveness as he stared at the doctor. "She's my spark, and I'm her match. And why do you care?"

The doctor nodded, and his demeanor softened a little more. BattleSchool was hard on these children. Strange unbreakable attachments grew up between them, and some of them were a little farther out than others. It's what sustained them through the rigorous schedule the IF had them on.

This boy gave every impression of the protective boyfriend...and initial sexual intercourse was always a little rough...but the multitude of bruises at her throat gave him pause.

"Can you tell me how she got those bruises on her throat?"

Jor's only answer was to reach up and unzip his own collar, pulling the material aside to show his own marks. Wick branded him, had always made sure he wore some sort of possessive mark to claim him as her own. And he'd always done the same. Whatever business this stranger thought he had asking about their relationship irritated Jor, and he glared defiantly at the man with resolute calm on his face.

Wick belonged to him.

He belonged to her.

And this nosy bastard of a doctor could think hard all he wanted about it, but as for him, Jor remained silent and just stared.

The doctor stared at the ring of bruises around Jor's throat, his eyebrows raising. If anything, she'd been rougher than he had. Things began to fall into place. This was no weak girl that this Nathan had chosen to torture.

"I see," he said finally, for the nth time. He relaxed a little and sighed. "Jor, we need to have a talk about...Wick."

He pulled up the secondary chair and seated himself next to Jor.

"Her ankle was fractured pretty badly, probably some sort of twisting injury. We've pinned it and removed the bone fragments. We'll put her on the bone regen unit this evening and she'll be walking in a few days. Her broken arm won't take as long, maybe a day or two." He took a breath before he continued.

"Her left arm muscles are relatively intact, but the skin is...gone. She's going to regain the use of her arm, but even with the nerve regen and a bit of cosmetic surgery, there's not going to be much feeling in the affected tissue. There isn't much we can do for that, at this level. Her attacker - Nathan, if you're correct - used an accelerant called Petrol 5 to cause the burn, and it consumed itself pretty quickly...but it's rocket fuel. It burns very, very, hot. We're lucky we can get the functional use of her arm back at all."
