Emotions Legend
Denali (Jan 02, 2005 11:55 p.m.): By now Mal was grinning broadly at the woman's flattery, and it was Reno's turn to press his boot heel down on her toes. It made the amusement in her smile turn to something a little harder, and she crossed her arms over her chest and affected a serious contemplation of the offer. It seemed like she was trying to decide whether or not to accept, but truth be told, Mal had already made up her mind. Seven hundred gold was a very pretty price, and she and Reno were already heading to Lahkis on a run. Taking on the woman and girl would be nearly double the pay for the same journey, and if she found the prospect of spending a month with the two strangers to be unpleasant, for that sum she could learn to live with it. Still, Reno would have to be convinced, and there was the matter of logistics to work through. They already had their own horses, and enough supplies to make the trip, but their two charges looked like they were going to need the whole packlist. It would be easier to buy them all onto a caravan than worry about food, water, and transportation, and it would be much safer, too. She and Reno traveled alone because, as the woman suggested, they could provide an excellent defense. But Mal wouldn't go so far as to get herself killed for a guide job, and protecting the women could be the caravan leader's problem. Decision made, Mal tilted her chin to look the question at Reno, and answered him when he raised an eyebrow at her. "<Two for one, sweets?>" she asked him in a low voice, speaking now in their native tongue, instead of common. "<Can't do any harm, us getting rich and them following us. We'll caravan.>" He all but crushed her foot beneath his, and Mal turned her wince into another smile for the woman. "Fine, but here's our terms. We'll provide you escort, but we'll be going with a caravan. Safer that way, you know, for you and your daughter." Her eyes twinkled. "Won't be more than two hundred to get you outfitted, and you'll pay that to the caravan leader. We get our five hundred upfront at the start of the journey, and your promise of two at the end. You'll follow my rules, we won't have any problems, and you two'll get to Lahkis safe and sound. Is it a deal?"
